Recent advertisements in Northern Kentucky University’s student newspaper have raised questions about how desperate the paper has become for ad sales, or if they have any vetting process for deciding what sorts of ads they will or will not accept. As you can see below, there are a number of ads that have appeared recently for “Resistance Records.” The end of each ad directs to a web site, resistance.com. The site appears to be dedicated to racism and white supremacy.
Wikipedia has a pretty informative posting with lots of supporting documentation. Read it here.
From the post:
Resistance Records is a record label that produces and sells music by neo-Nazi and white separatist musicians, primarily through its website. Advertising itself as “The Soundtrack for White Revolution,” Resistance Records also publishes a magazine called Resistance, of which Erich Gliebe has been the editor since 1999. Resistance Records is a subsidiary of the National Alliance. The label is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
So why is NKU letting these people advertise in their paper? See for yourself:

My best guess would be that whoever’s doing the advertising simply isn’t doing their homework. Major oopsie for NKU here. Apology on the way? Probably, especially since they do a lot to stress diversity on campus.
Ouch.

I’ll give them the benefit of doubt for now and guess no one saw the connection…as an ‘NKU subscriber/supporter I’ll definitely get in touch with the newspaper and question their ad policy. There are NO redeeming qualities to supremacist groups, musically or otherwise and they need to be repudiated at every opportunity. I take issue with a lot of things that appear here but if accurate, this is one I can wholeheartedly agree with.

I imagine they have very little choice. I would doubt a public school would want to go to court on this, they would most likely lose.

As an NKU student I am pretty angry. I’ll make sure I question the paper as soon as I can.
I have recently become involved in the on campus star program (students together against racism), I am sure they will be interested- great job beacon!

I spoke to the editor in chief, a guy named Tim, and he offered up his sincerest apologies. He informed me that he had gotten many complaints and that Northerner would no longer being doing any business with Resistance Records. Unfortunately it was a case of not checking details where details should be checked. Furthermore he assures me that an article of apology will be published in the next issue. According to Tim, Northern Kentucky University ethically conflicts with the neo-nazi ideology that was promoted.

Is this article an attempt to make up for your racist attacks on the NAACP?

Kilroy-aka-PETE BRONSON…stop it! YOU ARE JUST KILLING US!
Can’t you get a job working for an ad agency or something writing copy?
Too bad you burned your bridges or you could get a copy gig at City Beat! Seems like they take in a lot of wayward Enquirer people.
But ya gotta stop! You are killing me!!!!

Maxx, thanks! Keep us posted!
Kilroy, are you serious? I mean, I know Smitherman has become BFFs with the extreme right fringe—you know, the types who hang out at Horizons Community Church with Peter Bronson. Did they ever build that golf course yet, so worshipers can commune with Jesus by hitting some links?
But Kilroy, child, please don’t try to bring that nonsense onto this blog. Go say it to Bronson where he will congratulate you for it. I bet that makes you feel special.

I heard that Crossroads and Horizons were doing a joint venture with the golf course- rumor or fact. And did our fav Republican really join Crossroads after he killed off his almost 200 year old church- George Vincent? Bet they would love his money!

did the dean just drop a “child, please”?

Have you tried asking the NKU student paper staff for a comment?
11 Nov 2009 at 02:07 pm | #
Dean, have you considered that writing these type of articles is only giving the racists more publicity than they otherwise would have gotten on their own? I hope you at least tried to resolve this issue privately before taking it public. Remember that these racist groups don’t care if people criticize them, they just want the extra publicity to help spread their hate.

I guess that nobody saw the story that Channel 19 news did on this last night:
College Paper In Hot Water Over Racist Ads
Once again the Beacon scoops the MSM. Good job guys.
11 Nov 2009 at 09:24 pm | #
Check the comments on the channel 19 site linked above…four of them by three writers taking issue with the decision to drop the ads, citing “diversity” as a defense. Amazing. Neo-Nazi and/or Klan groups represent diversity? wtf are people drinking.
I received prompt emails back from both the editor and director of WNKU acknowledging the lapse in editorial/advertising research, even offering to send me a copy of the next issue.

Not so much it looks like.
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20091111/NEWS0103/911120340/NKU-student-paper-apologizes-for-ad
But you know how it is when you actually have to check sources and talk to people. It takes a little longer than throwing up crap on a blog.

We first got wind of this on November 6th, but we did take the time to confirm it before we reported it on the 10th. We appreciate all the people that give us tips.
And yes it was first reported on the Beacon. We’re happy to serve up stories for the news outlets to run with.

WCPO may have been investigating on Monday, but The Beacon beat them to press with the story. Close only counts in horseshoes & hand grenades, son.

I love how the whether81 quoted from the Enquirer, but left out this very next paragraph:

It’s too bad the Northerner has Army propaganda flashing above its website.

“It’s too bad the Northerner has Army propaganda flashing above its website.”
This from someone who wished veterans well, including those now serving just a couple of days back? Same Army as far as I can tell.
14 Nov 2009 at 06:45 pm | #
Actually I posted an article about the report that came out on Veterans day saying over 2,200 veterans die every year from a lack of health insurance. In the comment section I said Happy Veterans day. I was pointing out the irony of celebrating veterans while allowing them to die from a lack of health insurance. That isn’t the same as posting Army propaganda, not even close.

Let me get this straight.
The Northerner, the Northern Kentucky University (mascot is the NORSE), paper ran a paid advertisement for a grassroots movement / social organization.
This is not illegal, and completely logical since the resistance appears to be a NORTHERN based movement.
Are papers supposed to check with the central authorities, and their cabals for approval?
Feel free to email me personally if you are afraid of public viewing.
