State Representative, and primary sponsor of HB 228, takes a brief moment to answer questions about the potential abortion ban:
Andrew Warner: What motivated you to write such strict abortion legislation, especially considering Roe V Wade is still the law of the land?
Tom Brinkman: I would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned and abortion decisions returned to the states.
Andrew Warner: Do you think such a ban represents the beliefs of the population of Ohio? Do you think this bill has a chance to become law?
Tom Brinkman: I believe, and I think most Ohioans believe, in “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” You have to have “Life” to have the others and I am 100 percent pro life.
Andrew Warner: A rumor is circulating that this bill would make it illegal to go to another state and have an abortion performed. Is this true?
Tom Brinkman: No.
Andrew Warner: Because many abortions are a result of circumstances that make having a child near impossible, do you have any plans to care for children that would be born into poverty? Will they receive health care and proper nourishment?
Tom Brinkman: Adoption is a wonderful gift.
Andrew Warner: If this bill becomes law, will you then make an effort to make birth control available to those who can’t afford it?
Tom Brinkman: Should Roe be overturned, I will work on a strategy for the state of Ohio to prevent unwanted pregnancies. I will be out of office by then but will still work for this.

From Stephanie Dunlap’s CityBeat article on Brinkman’s bill, 5-11-06
Only when it’s medically necessary to save a woman’s life would Brinkman’s bill allow abortion. But that never happens anyway, he says. “It’s a fallacy perpetrated by the Planned Parenthood people,” Brinkman says. “My doctors tell me they’re never in that type of dilemma.”
Andrew, Brinkman may have lied on the record to CityBeat. I urge you to ask him to provide the names of these doctors. If he gives you any names, call the doctors, get them on record verifying Brinkman’s statement, and publish the results on the Beacon.

I have sent Brinkman two emails with this very question.
No response.

That’s Hypocrites and, yes, I have a very good reason. I’m not a reporter and I want to Brinkman to go on the record. Don’t you?

Hypocrites:
Anyone is a reporter, if she or he decides to find out something and report it!

Killing the “unwanted” is wrong! Whether it was Hitler killing Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals and Catholics OR some gal decidding she doesn’t want to deliver her child! It is wrong and Mr. Brinkman is correct. There is no grey area here! Innocent life must be protected.

Tom Brinkman is clearly one of those ‘closet case’ republicans. you know the type, they are the loudest gaybashers, and preach their twisted version of morality that the rest of us should practice. Meanwhile, they are cruising for young guys to go down on, or trolling the ‘net for a young guy to get off with.
These closet republican homos always get caught. Brinkman’s time is coming soon; he’s probably already getting blackmailed by the 19year old guy that he has been screwing for the past three years.
The bigger they are, the mightier they fall!

The issue is innocent life.

Blue Gill - I’d appreciate a yes or no answer, please. Are you Tom Brinkman?
13 Jun 2006 at 11:35 am | #
No, I am not Tom Brinkman, though I have met the man. I am (also) not Tom Sawyer and have never met Mr. Sawyer nor his friend Huck Finn.

No, I am not Tom Brinkman, though I have met the man.
Blue Gill:
- Approximately how many times have you met Brinkman?
- Approximately when was the last contact you had with him?
- Have you ever worked with him in any capacity?
- Do you consider him a personal friend?
- Are you a relative of his?

I answere your question and have no obligation to answer the ones above. I have met Tom Brinkman (casually) and I admire a man who stands by his principals….Tom Brinkman is such a man.
I think he makes people like you uncomfortable because he stands firmly behind what he says and does….no grey area with this guy!

Brinkman is an ass! He likes to be the judge over people and things that he does not find morally acceptable…such a hypocrit! Wonder how Tom feels about the people who solicit adult businesses such as, oh…Hustler Hollywood??? I am sure an upstanding citizen such as Tom Brinkman would be disgusted by anyone that gives business to Hustler Hollywood, isn’t that right Tom?

I thought that this exchange was fairly straightforward:
Andrew Warner: A rumor is circulating that this bill would make it illegal to go to another state and have an abortion performed. Is this true?
Tom Brinkman: No.
However, the proposed bill actually says otherwise (underlined sections are proposed additions to the code):
Sec. 2919.12. (A) No person shall [s]perform[/s] do any of the following:
[...]
(2) Transport another, or cause another to be transported, across the boundary of this state or of any county in this state in order to facilitate the other person having an abortion.
[...]
(B) Whoever violates division (A)(2) of this section is guilty of facilitating an abortion. Unlawful abortion or facilitating an abortion is a felony of the second degree or, if the offender previously has been convicted of or pleaded guilty to a violation...a felony of the first degree.

Blue Gill is saying, in essence, that if you are an Iraqi, you are inherently guilty.

Brinkman says that he believes in “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” What about a woman’s life when a pregnancy endangers it? What about liberty when a woman isn’t even free to make decisions about her own body? What about pursuit of happiness when a woman is raped, impregnated, and forced to have her rapists baby? This ban does not support those ideals.
17 Jun 2006 at 11:24 am | #
All fine points, but I can already predict Brinkman’s response: “What about the unborn baby’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?”
