The Cincinnati Beacon
“As Ohio Goes” Joins Liberal Blogs Promoting Political Censorship
Saturday, September 09, 2006

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

When Cindy Zawadski established the blog ”As Ohio Goes,” she did it as a bit of a response to Buckeye State Blog—specifically the manner with which BSB moderator Russell Huglock would censor posts he did not like.  That’s why, at the top of As Ohio Goes, the banner reads “Everyone is welcome to participate, all you need to do is register and you will be able to post diaries.” This afternoon, Zawadski joined the ranks of Democratic bloggers devoted to censoring political dissent.  Perhaps she should change her slogan to “Everyone is welcome to participate, all you need to do is support Democrats.”

We cross posted our recent exclusive about Dr. Vic Wulsin (”Dr. Vic Wulsin: Ethically Challenged? Part I” ), and a short time later it was deleted by Zawadski.  In its place?  A fluff piece about Wulsin and her supposed dedication to public health.  One must wonder if “public health” extends to African AIDS patients, at least in the world of Zawadski.

Zawadski did couch her censorship in very friendly and polite terms, however.  She invited me to post a comment at the current fluff piece, directing people to my article here at The Beacon.  As of this post, I have not submitted a comment.  And she also wrote this:

I am dedicated to removing Schmidt from office so - if you would like to post this after Wulsin is in Congress that would be fine. But right now - it muddies up my larger goal of removing republicans.

I am sorry to have “muddied up” a Democrat’s goal of “removing republicans.” Perhaps this would be easier to do if Democrats would not put blinders on concerning their own candidates.  Hypocrisy is not a recipe for success!  Hiding the truth is not the high road!

Is this what it means to “remove republicans”?  Hypocrisy, censorship, and an inability to address dissent?  Sounds rather like a Republican to me!  Must not be much of a difference these days…

  1. czawadzki says:

Were you trying to set me up? I have been very gracious to you and supportive of your agenda. I do not know why you would write this diary without first responding to my email.

Also, if you read my FAQ - it says AOG was created to support progressives - Wulsin is the progressive in the 2nd. We support her. I also put up articles supporting Fritakis -he is a progressive. (even though I will vote for Strickland) My FAQ also states that we should try to use constructive critism and remain positive when dealing with other progressives. You are welcome to comment on the fluff piece and direct readers to your article but I do not see why it needs to be crossposted at this time.

Wulsin has numerous outstanding qualities that would make her an exceptional congresswoman. I stand by her. Do you know a better candidate?

    Thank You,
    Cindy

  2. says:

What do you mean by suggesting this was a set-up?  How would I know you would censor political speech at a site that advertises anyone can post?

Does your FAQ (I wouldn’t know, it isn’t easy to find) say that AOG was created to support progressives by any means necessary, at any costs, despite what the record shows?

If your FAQ says that you should use constructive criticism, then you should have constructively criticized my report.  Instead, you deleted it.  Do you think deleting my work is “constructive”?

I do not wish to comment on your fluff piece.  I wish to draw attention to a so-called progressive who cannot stomach dissent, as apparently you cannot.

Yes, there were several better candidates.  They lost to Wulsin in the primary.  At the time, when I wrote about Wulsin and malariotherapy, everyone ignored me.  Well, now I have the report.

How can you willfully ignore facts?

  3. one advocate says:

dean - you know i’m new to this blogging thing. and i know you support free speech and unbiased reporting ( something unique in the cincinnati region), it’s just that this community, state and nation are being ruined by the fascist republican regime and you would, or i would, expect the “family” of progressives to stick together, promote and support each other at this critical time.a lone time when a difference could be made , IF WE ALL PULL TOGETHER.
i too don’t understand why you would create and promote dissent fo a candidate or on an issue you clearly don’t yet have the facts all together on - (i undertand it is because wulsin won’t give it up)but, to are you attempting to win the battle and lose the war?
let the republicans go after progressive candidates - and then, we can all hold our candidates accountable.
    vic wulsin - come clean.

  4. says:

Firstly, I don’t know why you say I don’t have all the facts.  Read the article about Wulsin.  Dr. Robert Baratz, president of the National Council Against Health Fraud, sent me a copy of the report.  I quote from it, and show how it contradicts Wulsin’s claims.

Your blind allegiance to Democrats is disturbing.  I don’t like Schmidt, and I won’t be voting for her—but does that mean I must support someone who seems to be telling outright lies about unethical behavior?

    Horse hockey!

    Bull poopie!

If this is such a critical time, it is because we have been hoodwinked by the politicians in power—particularly those who lie and spread dangerous misinformation.  Should I vote for such a person, just because he or she carries a (D) behind their name?

    You are not making sense.

We should pull together—and demand quality candidates.

  5. Feet to the fire says:

Cindy, a candidate that’s done some very unethical things isn’t progressive. Strickland isn’t a progressive either. He is just another corporate owned politician that supports industries as bad as King Coal. If you’re a real progressive you’ll open you’re eyes and stop blindly voting for corporate Democrats.

  6. Are you illiterate? says:

Yeah, that FAQ is really hard to find.  All you have to do is learn how to read.  No wonder it’s so hard for a hypocrite like Jason My Main Man to figure out.  Jason censored comments here when a poster pointed out the Hamilton County Sheriff’s notice about his foreclosure sale.  That’s why comment moderation is up, and this probably won’t be posted.  That is, unless Silly Bitch tries to make a point about how much more progressive he is than everybody else.

  7. says:

I see the FAQ in the very bottom, right corner of the site.  Hardly a place many people examine when visiting a website.

You are right that I moderate comments to avoid pointless spamming.  The poster in question was uploading irrelevant personal information about me ad nauseum.  Additionally, that issue has no bearing on, say, a story about Mayor’s Night In, or Todd Portune’s letter to Chris Finney—though the spammer in question would copy-and-paste endlessly into all topics.

I did not specifically develop and advertise The Beacon as a place where anyone in the world can post irrelevant personal attacks over, and over, and over again.

(Insert joke here about how our investigations into Wulsin are “irrelevant personal attacks.")

Lastly, I am not posting this to make a point about how progressive I am.  The issue has been introduced in an on-topic manner, so I am happy to address it.

  8. Freedom Fighter says:

    Dean:

You are among the worst in censorship and bashing anyone who has a different opinion. You and your circle will blast any logical opposition to your point of view, when no one buys it. Or, you will not post the comments. I my humble opinion you have NO ROOM TO TALK !

Why have you not provided a link to the complete report ?

Why do you pick and chose parts you feel are relevant. You had to be verbally beaten into getting the report from other sources, other than Wulsin, and made Wulsin the bad guy because she was unwilling to grant you the status you feel you deserve.

Until I’m able to read the complete report, I would question whether you have it or if you are relying on hearsay interview information.

    Where is the report ?

My apology if you have provided a link, but, because this story is your same old broken record, I did not feel the necessity to complete your rhetoric ramblings as they are viewed as the same old biased claims.

Provide a link and once I read the complete report, I might return to read your slanted position piece ?

  9. says:

Firstly, Freedom Fighter, I have never censored this site’s comments for political perspectives.  Never.  In fact, in the past week there is only one comment I did not validate.  It was a really really long rambling that someone signed “Brendan.” The document was just copied from the internet, and some words were swapped out.  It had no point, took lots of space, was just copied from somewhere else, etc.

I have censored comments that make crude sexual jokes about Tom Brinkman, and I even censored one that made a crude sexual comment about Phil Heimlich.  And yes, I have censored a spammer who just kept repeating him or herself endlessly about something not related to any topic at hand.

    Does this sound unreasonable?

But again, I have never censored political speech, nor do I intend to do that.  You are not telling the truth when you say I do not post comments that disagree.

    On Wulsin:

Why do I pick parts that I think are relevant?  Are you really asking me that?  Well, because I think they are relevant!

Do you deny that Wulsin wrote what I quoted?  Do you deny that it contradicts her claims?

I was not beaten into getting the document from other sources.  It just took some time.  Why are you so impatient?

Where is the report?  It is currently sitting on my computer desktop.  I may make it available sometime when I feel like it.  That’s more than I can say for Wulsin.

  10. says:

BTW, Freedom Fighter, you conflate censorship with “bashing anyone with a different opinion.”

    Silly goose!

  11. Jesus Christ says:

Every website that deals with controversy and generates activity needs to be monitored or it will be hijacked.  The Dean simply was putting a stop to people from hijacking his site and taking articles and discussions off topic.

I think what this lady needs to do is change her slogan on the banner.  It is OK to censor things in my opinion, but she needs to be honest about it.  Tell people out front that it is a progressive blog pushing progessive ideas and agendas.  If she is proud of her beliefs she shouldn’t be ashamed to let people know.

  12. anon says:

Freedom Fighter, 9-26-06: I have asked (Wulsin) about this issue after a Dem forum meeting...She looked me straight in the eye and said that I could not find any merit in the studies and reported on it.

  13. says:

Jesus, I agree.  If you want to censor on your own site, that is your right.  Just be honest.  Don’t call it something it’s not.

It’s like the Hamsher situation. She blasts other sites for political censoring, and then does the same thing herself…

  14. anon says:

Freedom Fighter bellowing in bold type reminds me of an old Peanuts cartoon, where Lucy says, “If you can’t be right, at least be wrong at the top of your voice.”

Calling oneself “Freedom Fighter” while simultaneously demanding to be kept in the dark about your chosen candidate’s problems is Orwellian. Ignorance is strength, etc.

Anyone calling her/himself “Freedom Fighter” without irony, as they froth about suburban Cincinnati politics, is someone who needs a time out. Getting lackluster Democrats elected is not quite on par with being in the French Resistance.

  15. one advocate says:

overall - i don’t think anyone can say the dean “censors” more than is appropriate.  i am glad he is refusing to post vulgar sexual insults and i agree, his personal life is his own and has no place on a political blog. (personally, i ‘m just not interested in his affairs.  if he is struggling or hit a couple bumps inthe road -it does not affect his crediblity or work as monitor and operator of his website) he is not an elected official and bears no power in goverment operation ( like finney the fink, etc.) so he should not allow himself to be a target.  i think he does a great job of allowing many views - how do we know this - we’re posting, we get agitated, we get teed,..
isn’t that the point of his blog to provoke thought and commentary?
i don’t agree with him on wulsin or As Ohio GOes - but,… blog away

  16. says:

The sort of blind support of Democrats that Cindy is now trying to promote demonstrates one of the fundamental weaknesses with the undemocratic and functionally challenged Ohio Democratic Party (ODP).

The ODP perpetuates “it’s my way or the highway” behavior with the grassroots urban progressive community because of the higher likelihood for these folks to expose unethical and/or ineffective Democrats, not just Republicans.

If the ODP is going to spend millions of dollars to spread their anti-Republican “culture of corruption,” sound byte propaganda, then Ohio Democrats should expect and welcome scrutiny regarding their supposed higher standards.

That’s how true Ohio Progressives expect to engage with the ODP, within a mutually respectful relationship that is flexible enough to, at times, be completely distinct and separate from one another.

True Ohio Progressives will likely never march lockstep with the Ohio Democratic Party because the state party has demonstrated far too many blunderous actions over the last 16 years of losing statewide campaigns.  In addition, many Ohio Democrats are far too inane, ineffective and/or inept. Thus, it is insane for ANYONE to expect true Progressives to support and vote for the entire Democratic Party ticket without first analyzing EVERY candidate by asking tough questions.

Cindy, I believe you are wrong to censor anything but the absolute worst content based on your CONTINUOUS criticism of Hughlock at BSB for doing something similar.

    Tisk… Tisk…

  17. Jesus H. Christ says:

"Tell people out front that it is a progressive blog pushing progessive ideas and agendas.  If she is proud of her beliefs she shouldn’t be ashamed to let people know.”

Jesus, that blog isn’t progressive. Don’t confuse Democrats with progressives. Democrats like Ted Strickland support King Coal and now raise more corporate money than Republicans. Dr. Wulsin speaks about health but has shown she has no ethics.

  18. says:

Why did you edit my email address? It’s hardly private information-it posted on Finney’s public website for all the world to see.

  19. says:

Because I did not feel like checking behind you to make sure it was public, since you had no point in posting it.

    Now I see it.

  20. Freedom Fighter says:

Why do I pick parts that I think are relevant?  Are you really asking me that?  Well, because I think they are relevant!

Where is the report?  It is currently sitting on my computer desktop.  I may make it available sometime when I feel like it.  That’s more than I can say for Wulsin.

<b.Yes, I would say, I have question the validity of your comments because you have not provided the complete report and I suggest you have picked, chosen and taken out of context.

You have had serveral months to get the report and admitted you did not even ask the person who paid for the report, therefore, it is easy to conclude you were not interested in getting the report, but, interested in showing Wulsin in the most unfavorable light because she would not get you the attention you felt you deserved.

Once again PUT UP, OR SHUT UP !

I question your credibility, period !

I think picking what you feel relevant censorship !

Your close nit gang is still there to defend your half-fast scoops !!

    </b>

  21. Freedom Fighter says:

<i>Getting lackluster Democrats elected is not quite on par with being in the French Resistance.

Those in the know, know !

Those that are not in the know, Don’t !

You are obviously in the dark.

Some are doers, some are talkers !

Some will stand and fight for freedoms for all, while others just talk !

Freedom Fighters record speaks for itself !!!

  22. says:

    Freedom Fighter:

What context do you need for the following excerpt from the report:

    Programmatic Next Steps

    1. Write a strategic plan for the Heimlich Institute.
    2. Rename malariotherapy “Immunotherapy” ["IT"].
    3. Verify and elaborate on East Africa Phase II trial.

Why would she do any of this if the whole shebang had “no scientific validity”?  It just doesn’t add up!

But don’t get your panties in a bunch.  We have plenty of time till November.  I’ll let you see the report faster than Wulsin would!

Besides, FF, you really need to learn to relax.  Can’t we have some foreplay, or something, before you go charging after your needs?

  23. Fester Bestertester says:

Freedom Fighter: you did not even ask the person who paid for the report

Who cares, Bunky? The Dean got the report and good for him. That’s what counts in the news business. It’s called getting the story.

You can thank Dr. Wulsin and her evasive behavior for making this a story. Any decent politician knows to get out in front of a bad news story instead of dithering like Dr. Vic.

Since this is just the first peek at Wulsin’s report, I’m sure we’re can all expect plenty of frenzied posts in boldface type from you in days to come.

Quick question, FF. With all due respect, have you ever had a head injury?

  24. Freedom Fighter says:

We have plenty of time till November

I suppose we are just to take your, I know best and am always right position !

My position at this point is that these are your words, not Wulsin !

You have clearly demonstrated your motives. You intend to influence an election and use out of context material to justify your corruption.

I suggest the report you have is not the report she referes to and since you will not reveal the complete report, I question if you even have it !

PUT UP, or SHUT UP !

  25. Freedom Fighter says:

    2. Rename malariotherapy “Immunotherapy” ["IT"].

This could be as simple as the treatment for malaria effects the immune system. HIV is an immune deficiency illness. There may be methods, links, commonality between the two treatments ? This could be the research had already taken a different direction before the point she was hired ?

There may be extractions of genes from the treatment of malaria that prove beneficial to the treatment of HIV ?

If she was reporting on the viability of the institution to receive future funding after “malariotherpy” this would be wise suggestions. It does not mean she advocated either !

    3. Verify and elaborate on East Africa Phase II trial.

We don’t know how much was provided before report. This could be a recommendation that she does not take at face value the oral, written information she was provided, period !

I just don’t get to where you want everybody to be. I’m being objective and you still have not sold me anything !

  26. Koo Koo Bird says:

"Those in the know, know !

Those that are not in the know, Don’t !”

    WTF?

“You are obviously in the dark.”

    You are obviously delusional!

“Some are doers, some are talkers !”

What have you done besides type everything in bold letters and what the hell are you talking about?

“Some will stand and fight for freedoms for all, while others just talk !”

I know you’re not talking about Democrats. They shut out independent candidates that are on the ballot from debates, spend millions of dollars to keep third party candidates off the ballot and intimidate independent signature gatherers.

“Freedom Fighters record speaks for itself !!!”

Koo Koo Bird loves it when people speak in the third person. What record? Nobody knows who the hell you are.

  27. says:

    FF wrote:

It is funny the extent you will go to find excuses for your precious Democrat.  But I’ll play along.  Here are more quotes from the report.  You can see her use of “Immunotherapy” in reference to “malariotherapy”:

Three approaches comprised my methods. First and most importantly, I reviewed the literature on the public health significance of AIDS, malaria, and co-infection, the scientific significance of relationship between AIDS and malaria, and specifically, the evidence for Immunotherapy. The types of investigation included ecological surveys, in vitro analyses, animal research, epidemiological studies, and clinical trials. Immunotherapy for HIV/AIDS has undergone both phase I (safety) and phase II (effect) clinical trials. A question to answer during this consultancy was whether HI could now move into phase III (e(population-based effectiveness) trials.

    (...)

While reviewing the extensive and diverse literature related to AIDS and malaria, I noticed a
trend over time toward an increasing number of negative reports compared to positive reports.

    (...)

In 1991 Dr. Henry Heimlich proposed Immunotherapy for the treatment of AIDS. In1993 he began collaborating with Chinese investigators to conduct a Phase II Clinical Trial.

    (...)

The Chinese have continued to study Immunotherapy.

    (...)

Some key issues of feasibility affect every phase of Immunotherapy trials:
    · Stigma surrounding HIV status.
    · Prejudice against Immunotherapy.
    · Sensitivity about conducting research in Africa or other Third World areas while not doing the
    same in the USA.

So, nice try Freedom Fighter.  But your explanation doesn’t work.  But sure, off the top of my head, early on a Monday morning, I am sure you will say I made all of this up because I did not give you the report yet.

You know what’s funny?  I asked Wulsin for the report for months—and that was OK with you.  You said I should contact the Heimlich Institute to get the report.

OK, FF.  Don’t want to wait for me to give it to you?  Go ask for it yourself!

  28. anon says:

Dean, when you posted the current Wulsin item, I figured that “Freedom Fighter” would eventually be reduced to claiming your copy of the report is false. Way to go, FF. I knew we could count on you.

But where are Wulsin and her staff denying that the report is hers? Sorry, FF, the ball’s in Wulsin’s court.

  29. Frankenberry says:

Wulsin’s quote from her report: Prejudice against Immunotherapy.

Priceless! Spoken like a true PR flak. That’s like complaining that lynching has gotten a bad rap in the press.

Could it be that the “prejudice” against malariatherapy is due to the fact that Heimlich has been chased from one third world country to another with government and media investigations hard on his heels?

Was it “prejudice” against malariatherapy that got Heimlich thrown out of this Nashville international AIDS conference in October 2004 (front page story in the Tennessean), the same time Wulsin was working for Heimlich?

  30. Freedom Fighter says:

Nobody knows who the hell you are.

Those that are not in the KNOW, don’t know !

    Those that are, DO !

The record speaks for itself !

Everyone on the board has benefited from the work that Freedom Fighter has done !

I’m not egotistical, though, so I fine with a conclusion that I am a nobody.

Slam on, I can take, but, CAN YOU ?

  31. Freedom Fighter says:

The Chinese have continued to study Immunotherapy.

This speaks volumes to the validity of some form of studies. Do you think the Chinese don’t know what they are doing ? They are masters of taking ideas, refining them and becoming experts. THEY now finance this country.

You have suggested that malaria unmodified was injected. You have been unwilling to accept that extractions from other illness can not cure or immunize another disease. Well, this is just not the case. Smallpox was rid from the earth via. immunotherapy !

There may be aspects of malaria that tends to boast the immune system to fight off the disease. What if that aspect of the germ could be extracted to create an injectable serum for the treatment of aids ? If I were a doctor that would excite me !

You read what you want to read and can not see the bigger picture.

If I were dying of HIV and was approached that some doctor wants to inject me with another disease to study the effects. I would listen to the theory, evaluate the risks and benefits to myself and society and grant / not grant authorization.

There was a time when pigs hearts, and artificial hearts where inserted in human trials

Some proved to be beneficial research.

How about stem cell research. Did this not take human trials. Where their not, and still extreme opposition ?

Keep trying you still haven’t sold this layman !

  32. Freedom Fighter says:

OK, FF.  Don’t want to wait for me to give it to you?  Go ask for it yourself!

This is not my battle, this is yours !

You are the one trying to sell everyone on your position. I’m not defending anyone, I merely point to the holes in your argument.

Since you are so eager to excerpt bait (...), your arguments lack validity and credibility.

It is not so much what you claim to provide, it is what you are willing to snip !

Are you afraid that the full report my lead to other conclusions ?

What you have provided so far certainly has !

  33. Feedom Fighter says:

<i>Leonard Madu said he reluctantly asked Heimlich to withdraw from the conference because he didn’t want Heimlich’s presentation to eclipse other messages at the meeting, which is devoted to addressing the alarming spread of HIV and AIDS among Africans and African-Americans.

Heimlich said he would report new findings about malaria studies but would not say whether human subjects were involved.

Mosha said afterwards he thought Heimlich’s theories were counterintuitive, but would have been interested in hearing the doctor’s findings.

  34. Freedom Fighter says:

Quick question, FF. With all due respect, have you ever had a head injury?

Spoken with immaturity, obviously by someone under 25 !

Oh yes, and when they don’t like what you have to say or the message you deliver, they will discredit or attempt to shoot the messenger !

    Spoken with immaturity

Typical, wRong wingnut whacko missionary position !

Are you suggesting because one has an open mind, it must be from a head injury ?

The truth hurts and no one except the tree hugging, dean scream-like, patch is buying your arguments, period !

  35. says:

    FF,

Are you really defending malariotherapy experiments, which all credible experts have dismissed?

    Really?

  36. Freedom Fighter says:

    Leonard Madu said he reluctantly

Is this guy not credible ?

I am not defending anything !

I will suggest that Immunotherapy has proven to be beneficial in our society.

I am not a doctor, but, it is my understanding that malaria causes fever. Fever is the bodies self defense to kill disease. During fever massive white blood cells are produced.

I would suggest, that if the great advances of science could extract the gene, DNA element that causes the increase in white blood cells during malaria, then that may be useful in the fight against HIV ?

Or, if injecting an extracted weaker version of a disease causes fever, white blood cells to attack HIV, that as well may be beneficial.

  37. says:

FF, take your comments to the Wulsin article—which is a more appropriate place.  I’ll engage you further there, if you desire.

  38. Nate Livingston says:

    Dean!

Why would you expect white liberals to allow dissenting opinions? I’ve told you and your readers many times that white liberals are the most intolerant people on this planet! One day they’ll come to realize that their blind support of anyone flaunting the “progressive” label is dangerous and hurts their cause. Any criticism, no matter how legitimate, of Paul “I’m going back to Iraq” Hackett, lilly-white Air America Radio, Howard Dean, Todd “I support the sales tax and jail tax” Portune, Hillary “i voted for the Iraq War” Clinton, David Pepper, or, yes, Dr. Wulsin, is met with censorship or disdain.

  39. says:

I agree, Nate.  But your answer seems to be in looking at Republicans.  I prefer looking to the Greens.

However, at some point the Wulsin argument will have to end.  I have the report.  I know what it says.

Will they really fight the truth of words on paper?

  40. Freedom Fighter says:

white liberals are the most intolerant people on this planet!

They tolerate nate, rhymes with hate don’t we !

It would appear the only one that doesn’t allow dissenting opinions is race baiters !

They are green, because they are GREEN !

Get someone elected and maybe more could support. I just don’t see any viable candidates. They are all fringe elements !

Don’t get me wRong they are good people who have done great work, but, they are fringe elements and unelectable !
