Uncounted Filmmaker Travels to Cincinnati for Ohio Premiere

A recent Ohio Poll by the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research showed that no matter which Democrat emerges victorious from the primary season, the general election race will be tight. This tight race, and the heightened concerns about election integrity that accompany it, makes for a timely Cincinnati appearance of the new feature-length documentary, UNCOUNTED: The New Math of American Elections. The screening takes place at the Esquire Theatre on March 26, 2008 at 7pm. A question and answer session featuring the filmmaker, David Earnhardt, will follow the screening.

UNCOUNTED - written, produced, and directed by multiple Emmy award-winner Earnhardt - examines how the fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 and now looms as an unbridled threat in 2008. UNCOUNTED sheds much needed light on the war being waged on the core of our democracy - our right to vote - by exposing the systemic problems that plague our nation’s elections and disenfranchise voters, including Jim Crow-like voter suppression, voter intimidation, undervoting, provisional balloting, the privatization of the election process, and electronic voting.

“Pundits are fond of saying, ‘As Ohio goes, so goes the nation,’” said Earnhardt, “And our movie clearly illustrates that John Kerry would have been elected in 2004 if every Ohio voter who wanted to vote was able to cast a vote and if each vote was counted as cast.”

“The right of every citizen to vote and to have that vote count is threatened and must be protected,” said Lynn Worpenberg, Co-Chair of Democracy for Cincinnati, “Our group is proud to co-sponsor the Cincinnati premier of this crucial documentary film.”

In addition to being an searing indictment of our country’s election system, UNCOUNTED is also the uplifting story of a small group of whistle blowers hell-bent on doing the right thing. These men - computer programmer Clint Curtis, who is directed by his boss to create software that will “flip” votes from one candidate to another, Utah, County Clerk Bruce Funk, who is locked out of his office for raising questions about security flaws in electronic voting machines, and Californian Steve Heller, who gets convicted of a felony after he leaks secret documents detailing illegal activities committed by a major voting machine company - are true patriots who embody what’s best about our country.

“In the words of Thomas Paine, ‘The right of voting for representatives is the primary right by which other rights are protected. To take away this right is to reduce a man to slavery,’” added John Burik of Democracy for Cincinnati, “Caging, ID requirements, and provisional ballots are the new tools of voter disenfranchisement and there is no greater goal at this time than restoring the right to vote.”

The Cincinnati screening, which is sponsored by Democracy for Cincinnati and the Hamilton County Young Democrats, is part of an UNCOUNTED Ohio tour that includes a stop in Columbus on Thursday, March 27 at the Drexel East Theatre, 2254 East Main Street, Columbus, OH 43209.

Screening time is 7pm on Wednesday, March 26, at the Esquire Theatre, 320 Ludlow Ave; Cincinnati, Ohio 45220.

    Mr. Dean:

I can not tell you how thrilled I am to see such a topic posted on a local blog.  If I could be there I would.  I plan on seeing this at some point.  If this post adds one more spectator to the audience consider it a success.  Thank you again.
