  1. L.G. says:

If people in Gaza didn’t fire missles into Israel, this whole situation would not be going on.

  2. cincysuz says:

LG - Are you really that ignorant? No let me answer that. Yes.

  3. says:

L.G. it is much more complicated than that. I suggest that you do some reading on the subject. Jimmy Carter wrote a book called “Palestine: Peace, Not Aparthied” that would be a good start. He talks about it in this interview.

  4. L.G. says:

I’m quoting President Carter: “Well, there’s an inherent commitment in America, which I share as a Christian, of a deep commitment to make sure that Israel is safe and that Israel is free and that they can seek for peace.”

Let’s have a thoughtful discussion within the context of the current “seige” that is supposedly going on. First, it’s fact that Israel is an ally of the United States.  President Carter says this himself. I think Justin and Cincysuz will agree with me in saying that there were militants in Gaza who have been constantly attacking Israel, even firing missles into Israel within the last week or two.  These are facts.

Cincysuz and Justin...if someone is shooting rounds from a gun into your home, are you not going to do anything within your means to stop them from shooting at you?  This is the same situation.  If the Palestinians do not want to be under “seige” then they should control the militants in Gaza.  I don’t think this is as complex as people want to make it out to be.

Justin, I will say, I have not read President Carter’s book, however, I did watch this interview with Amy Goodman in September. He agrees that Israel is a friend. So for Cincysuz to say I’m ignorant is simply not true because I’m dealing with the facts.  Militants in Gaza attacked Israel and Israel responded.  The U.S. supports Israel defending themselves.  Israel would be concerned with the Palestinians in Gaza if they wouldn’t attack them.  It’s like a younger sibling trying to fight with his/her big brother.  Don’t get mad if you want to pick a fight and you get blown out by big brother.

  5. L.G. says:

Correction: Israel would NOT be concerned with the Palestinians in Gaza if they wouldn’t attack them.

  6. says:

L.G., the US considered Suharto, the brutal dictator of Indonesia an ally. The US props up a puppet regime in Saudi Arabia and supports despots around the world, so simply being an ally of the US doesn’t make them innocent by any means.

I don’t condone the acts of violence from either side, but there’s a tendency in the US media to only cover Palestinian acts of violence when it is Israel that is occupying Palestinian lands. You have to understand the context of this conflict. You’re not dealing with all the facts until you understand this context.

I don’t think you really got what Carter was saying. He’s saying that there should be a two state solution. His book compares the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands to Aparthied in South Africa.

If the US didn’t give Israel $6 billion dollars in weapons and give them cover at the UN, they would have to make peace with the Palestinians and get out of their territory.

  7. works72 says:

No if the US didnt give isreal 6 billion in weapons then the Palestinians, al quade and iran would destroy israel as they have promised to many times

  8. says:

No if the US didnt give isreal 6 billion in weapons then the Palestinians, al quade and iran would destroy israel as they have promised to many times

That is simply not true, most Palestinians want a two state solution so they can live in peace. They don’t want Israel in the occupied territories. The US gives Israel cover so they continue what Carter has described as apartheid. The US should be more even handed if it wants a real peace process.

Israel has nuclear weapons and a very large military. Iran isn’t going to attack them and hasn’t promised to do so. The Palestinians don’t have a military and seek a peaceful two state solution.

Al Qaeda seems pretty focused on the US. They hate us because of our occupation in Iraq and the sanctions before the war that killed half a million Iraqi children. They also hate our support for the puppet regime in Saudi Arabia (and other countries) and for when our military was in their holy lands.

Israel’s bombing of Lebanon didn’t make them any more popular in the region either. Bombs don’t make peace, diplomacy does.
