Race-baiter touts relationship with McCain rep, Local Repub Hartman denounces racist speech

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Just days after exposing local McCain campaign chair Joe Deter’s personal relationship with Jim Schifrin, author of a hate-laced rag-sheet filled with race-baiting, The Whistleblower is bragging about its relationship with Deters—a smack in the face to anyone expecting better character from those appointed to lead a major political campaign.  Meanwhile, Republican candidate for County Commission Greg Hartman easily denounces a publication that calls Cincinnati’s first directly elected African American mayor a “gay darkie.”

From today’s Whistleblower:

~~ Also in Columbus, Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern issued a statement calling upon John McCain to immediately remove former Ohio Treasurer “JayWalking Joe” Deters as Southwest Ohio Chairman of his presidential campaign, because Deters will not repudiate his long-time friendship with WLW Hate Radio Trash Talker Bill Cunningham. It’s a good thing Redfern doesn’t know how often “The JayWalker” has lunch with Beloved Whistleblower Publisher Charles Foster Kane. There’s no end of what Deters could then be accused of because of the company he keeps.

Schifrin (who writes under the name “Charles Foster Kane"), refers to a statement by Chris Redfern.  Here’s a key excerpt:

Joe Deters’ appointment is a wink and a nod to the far right.  Has John McCain conveniently forgotten that it was Joe Deters who instigated and defended the offensive Bill Cunningham rant that he himself condemned?  As per usual, John McCain is trying to have it both ways, trying to appear moderate even as he moves further and further out of the mainstream.

If Ohio Democratic leadership is concerned at Deters’ relationship with Cunningham, then more attention should be paid to this guy Schifrin.  Apparently aware of our recent criticisms, Schifrin included this is today’s edition:

~~ And this morning we got a call from NAALCP Chairman Julian Bond apologizing for local NAALCP President SMLP Smithermouth and thanking The Blower for our fair-and-balanced coverage this week, giving us an honorary membership, and saying as a member we could continue to refer to all blacks, Negroes, and African-Americans as “Colored People,” just like his organization does. After all, if the NAALCP didn’t repudiate Jesse Jackson for using the “N-word” and saying he wanted to cut Obama’s nuts off, there’s no way anybody could criticize The Blower for its journalistic jocularity.

In a quick attempt to change the subject, Schifrin characterizes his own racist ramblings as “jocular.” One must wonder why an individual would take such merriment at spewing hateful language daily.  But more disconcerting, why won’t Joe Deters distance himself from this joker?  When asked if he’d denounce calling our mayor a “gay darkie,” Deters said, “Get that (camera) out of my face.”

Meanwhile, the idea of denouncing anyone who would call our mayor a “gay darkie” comes rather easily to Republican Greg Hartman:

We asked if Hartman would denounce that kind of language, and he said, “Yeah, absolutely.  Absolutely.” So while Greg Hartman absolutely denounces hate-laced race-baiting, McCain campaign chair Joe Deters is still apparently lunching with the likes of Jim Schifrin, which appears to be a tacit endorsement of his offensive daily rag-sheet.

One must wonder at the people McCain appoints to leadership positions within his campaign.

TITLE: Now Just Between Us White Folks

~~ With the historic National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People’s GOP-bashing Obama Rally in Cincinnati now fading into oblivion, Scared Suburbanites are venturing back into the City and people who were conveniently scheduled to be out of town, are now returning.

~~ In Friday’s Fishwrap, Liberal Lunatic Cliff Peale wrote about what a big success the historic National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People’s GOP-bashing Obama Rally in Cincinnati was. After all, it brought all that “goodwill” to the City, and Cliff even found one Downtown restaurant that didn’t lose all of its business.

~~ Now here’s something Cliff forgot to mention: how many of the 9,000 people attending the historic National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People’s GOP-bashing Obama Rally in Cincinnati actually visited the historic Empty Uppity Oprah Winfrey Campaigning for Obama, Under-funded, Ugly-ass Poorly-Planned Unnagraown Ray roe Museum Not-so-Free-dom Center.

~~ Also during the historic National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People’s GOP-bashing Obama Rally in Cincinnati, Senior Colored Correspondent Courtis Gray says

~~ And did you see all those Colored People on TV praising the courteous Cincinnati Police Department for chauffeuring them around? From now on, every conventioneer who comes to Cincinnati will expect the same service. We wonder, how much did all the extra hospitality cost the City’s over-taxed payers, 52% of whom live in the suburbs and don’t get to vote against any of those bozos wasting all their money

~~ Waldo from the West Side spent the week at the Outer Banks, where he found out that restaurateurs in the Tar Heel State automatically add 15% to every check as a “gratuity.” When asked, a staff member was heard to say “It’s because of those damned ‘Canadians,’ they don’t tip.” Only later did Waldo find out “Canadian” was a code word for “black person.” Upon our group’s arrival back on the Queen City , imagine Waldo’s surprise to find the NAALCP convention had arrived in all its glory.

~~ Did any of the out of town colored people buy any of those NOBAMA bumper stickers Billy Bob from Bullitsville, KY was selling out of his cart at Fourth and Main Streets all week?

~~ Is it true that was actually Patsy Crowley reporting on as they say in Ft. Thomas “the dark people” for the Blower this week from Fountain Square ? Word is Patsy’s boss said Patsy was the only reporter capable of being fair-and-balanced with so many of Fishwrappers residing in that racist state of Kentucky .

~~ The National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People’s GOP-bashing Obama Rally announced last night that they will be canceling their convention in New York next year and instead, will have it in Boone County, Kentucky. They said with the DemocRATS are taking over the county in 2008, and this place looked ripe. They spoke about the possibility of inviting McCain back to their Convention, since President Barack will be too busy, and with no election next year, what would it hurt? One Boone County restaurant owner says next year, we’ll be adding 15% gratuities for those “Canadians” too.

tacit endorsement of his offensive daily rag-sheet

Is listing someone’s blog in your blogroll a tacit endorsement too?  Or are only white people capable of producing “hate-laced rag-sheets filled with race-baiting”? Maybe I’m odd, but I also find Nikki X’s rantings to be a bit “racial” too. Why is she included in your blogroll and why have you openly defended her in the past? I’m confused.

Are black people the only people who have feelings? “Gay darkie” may be rough but I find it gentler than this portrayal of our esteemed president

  3. says:

    Your link doesn’t work.

  4. says:

    Working link:

    http://theblackfistblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/iraq-war-price-tag-12-billion-every.html

trey, I don’t understand your question?  Are you asking me to denounce a picture of George W. Bush where he is shown to share facial expressions with monkeys?  On what basis?

  5. says:

Chimps are our closest relatives. To compare Bush to monkey’s is really an insult to the monkey’s. Bush is a huge war criminal that is responsible for the death of over a million innocent men, women and children. (I know, Trey, war criminals have feelings too.) Bush is responsible for millions of people being displaced in Iraq. He’s destroying our environment and our civil liberties. I denounce that blog for insulting those monkey’s.

  6. .Cincy<>Capell. says:

Trey is right, the Black Fist Blog was wrong to print that picture. It’s an insult to chimpanzees everywhere.

“We wonder, how much did all the extra hospitality cost the City’s over-taxed payers, 52% of whom live in the suburbs and don’t get to vote against any of those bozos wasting all their money”

52% of the City’s taxpayers don’t live in the City of Cincinnati? That’s a non sequitur. Actually, this one is a favorite of the City hating right-wing suburbanites. They bitch & bloviate about Cincinnati’s laws, development, spending, etc and they don’t even live in the Cincinnati. They don’t pay City taxes, they can’t vote in our elections, they are not citizens of Cincinnati. Fat Jim Schifrin lives at 1116 Birney Lane in Anderson Township.  Blue Chipper Jeff Capell, who trolls local blogs under the handle of CincyJeff, is a constant critic of the City of Cincinnati, yet he himself is a citizen & resident of Blue Ash. (His number is listed in the public phone book, incidentally, so it’s not a violation of his privacy to reprint it. Fat Jim’s is unlisted, but f*ck that gossip-mongering bigot). Most of the COAST wackos don’t live in Cincinnati.

Dean, should you perhaps consider delisting Fritsch’s blog from your blogroll?

  7. says:

Dean, you honestly don’t find some of his gags funny? I haven’t read the guy for a while but when I do, I usually get a chuckle out of some of his stuff. Some is a little too harsh but still: half-way clever humor is hard to come by and he’s better than 95% of people at it.

Trey, please show us what at the Whistleblowers racist site gives you such a chuckle. I’m really curious and can always use a good chuckle.

  8. Dewey says:

It’s Ok to hat if you’re a “progressive”. (Stolen from another blog)

  9. says:

Dean, should you perhaps consider delisting Fritsch’s blog from your blogroll?

Don’t we need to keep an eye on them?  I was thinking of adding Triantafilou’s.

I do think you make an interesting point about whether activists who insert themselves into the City’s business live in the City or not.

At the same time, I wonder:  is it unreasonable to think that what happens in Cincinnati has an impact on Cincinnati’s suburbs?  And if not, should those who live in a suburb advocate for those City positions that benefit their suburb?

Of course, if so, it should be disclosed.

  10. says:

Dewey, I guess you meant to write “hate.” Were you referring to racism?  Racism is not okay, whether one is a progressive or not.

  11. .Cincy<>Matusak says:

If it’s ok to refer to President Bush as a chimp, is it ok to refer to Barack Obama as a chimp?  Why or why not?

My wife explains her answer at my link.

  12. says:

Thank you, .Cincy<>Matusak, for providing a textbook example of the ”False Analogy.”

In an analogy, two objects (or events), A and B are shown to be similar. Then it is argued that since A has property P, so also B must have property P. An analogy fails when the two objects, A and B, are different in a way which affects whether they both have property P.

You have attempted to suggest that if it is funny to compare Bush to chimps, it is also acceptable to compare Obama to chimps.  In doing so, you seem to presume that there these acts share similar properties.  But that is not the case.

There are not widespread instances of hegemony suggesting whites are inferior for being more like primates than humans.  However, there is a history of racist thinking that links Black people to primates.

Therefore, comparing Bush to monkeys is not racist in the same way, as the act has no history to create a racist context.  This context does exist with Obama, and that is why your analogy is false.

Similarly, compare the phrase “Black power!” with “White power!”

A call for “Black power!” is a call for those without power to achieve it.  It is a liberating call for empowerment.  A call for “White power” is a call for maintaining the white power structure, which has a history of being institutionally racist.

The two utterances, while linguistically similar, are culturally different and not analogous, like what I take to be your suggestion about Bush the monkey versus saying the same of Obama.

  13. .Cincy<>Matusak says:

If I’m reading you right, you are saying that it’s ok to refer to Bush as a chimp but it’s not ok to refer to Obama as a chimp.  And it’s because Obama is black and Bush is white.

You do realize you’re applying different standards to different races, this in a thread bashing The Whistleblower for allegedly being a racist.

  14. else47 says:

52% of the City’s taxpayers don’t live in the City of Cincinnati? That’s a non sequitur. Actually, this one is a favorite of the City hating right-wing suburbanites. They bitch & bloviate about Cincinnati’s laws, development, spending, etc and they don’t even live in the Cincinnati. They don’t pay City taxes,

This is a perfect example of “progressive” logic.  Took almost 5 sentences for you to contradicted yourself. Read the highlighted parts “52% of the City’s taxpayers don’t live in Cincinnati then “they don’t pay city taxes”.

Many people that don’t live in Cincinnati still pay city taxes and have a stake in what goes on in the city even if they choose to live outside the city limits.  In fact they are taxed without representation and then you are surprised they bitch when the city waste their money?

Taxation without representation.  Where i have heard that before?

  15. says:

You do realize you’re applying different standards to different races, this in a thread bashing The Whistleblower for allegedly being a racist.

Find just one quote I’ve written here that is racist, and then explain yourself.

Are you saying I’m racist because I think the George W. Bush / monkey picture is funny?  Against whom am I a racist?  White men?  I am one of them!

Am I a racist because I think, due to our culture of racism, that the context of comparing Obama to a monkey would be different?  Against whom am I a racist in that scenario?  Black men?  Why, for not wanting to compare them to monkeys?

You are not making any sense!

  16. says:

else47, if I work in Kentucky, should I get to vote in Kentucky?

What if someone is not an American citizen, but works here for a while and pays taxes.  Should they get to vote?  What if I have foreign investments?  Do I get a voice in the other government’s economic policy?  Why or why not?

  17. says:

One more comment on this tidbit:

You do realize you’re applying different standards to different races…

The standard I have applied here is logic, and an attempt to avoid the fallible false analogy.  Therefore, I have not applied different standards.

  18. says:

Dean, thanks for doing the link. I swore I had that right. Oh well.

Justin, don’t make me go back and pull quotes I think are funny from Schifrin’s(sp?) site. I’m low on time. But off-the cuff, I’ll say his gags about blacks not tipping are kinda funny.  By the way, I actually find the chimp-Bush pictures funny too. They do look alike.  But the point is you can’t have such an obvious double-standard no matter how convoluted an argument the Dean puts forward.

And Dean, exactly how far does this supposedly “historically equalizing” double standard extend?  If a black man physically assaults me, is it historically proper for me to defend myself or should I be thinking on on the oppression that “my people” did to “his people” and accept it as a “historically equalizing” event?  Sounds like a confusing and rather dangerous “fairness doctrine”.

  19. .Cincy<>Capell. says:

If you work in Cincinnati you pay payroll taxes because you rive on our roads, and are protected by our police, fire an EMT services while you are working. It’s a user fee. I work in Erlanger, KY and pay Erlanger payroll taxes. That doesn’t mean that I deserve a say in how Erlanger runs its government. I don’t get a vote, and neither do you if you work in Cincinnati, but don’t live in the City.

If you don’t like it, get another job out of our fair city.

  20. .Cincy<>Matusak says:

Actually in our country anyone can speak out about any issue they want.  Blogs, online magazines, and forums are specifically set up to generate a cross-section of responses.  It’s counter-intuitive to show up at one of these place and tell people to keep their opinions to themselves.

Unless you live in Hyde Park and are unemployed like me.  Then you have nothing else to do with your life except live through other people.

  21. librariangrrl says:

I can’t believe that I am even going to take the time to explain this-- but it’s hot outside and I just woke up from an “unsatisfying nap” that has, as a result, made me angry and somewhat cranky…

    So, here goes…

    trey:

The reason why the"gags about blacks not tipping” is in no way, shape, or form funny, is because it is a stereotype.  I think that most of us will agree here that stereotyping is generally unacceptable / wrong behavior.  In fact, I will go as far as to point out the stereotyping is one factor that leads to hostility and prejudice.

There is certainly no way to tell who is going to tip what in a restaraunt or at a bar.  I have friends that make their living bar tending and they still tip terribly when we go out to eat no matter how good the service is.  I have friends that are physicians and attorneys that carry bags that cost hundreds of dollars and are wear watches that costs thousands. You would be lucky to get a 15% tip from them (which is on the low side of the standard) even though they can certainly afford to tip far more, and by looking at them, one might expect them to.

Point being, you can not just look at a person and tell how they are going to tip.  This applies to skin color as well.

I was downtown all last week to attend a variety of NAACP events.  I watched Obama’s speech from inside a restaraunt located on Fountain Square.  Service was terrible, as the place was very busy.  Regardless, I specifically observed from my position at the bar several white guests get acknowledged and served before the black couple that was sitting next to me for no apparent reason.  I know the bar tender saw them, as she saw and served me as soon as I sat down beside them, but 20 minutes later, they were still waiting.

Maybe she was afraid they weren’t going to tip her, in which case, she determined that they were 2nd class citizens, not worthy of the service afforded to her white customers.

After Obama’s speech we went to eat and then took a walk downtown.  It was nice to see so many people actually walking around down there, since it is normally DEAD on a week night around 11 or so.  It was shocking however, to see that pretty much all of the businesses were closed.

A national convention was in town.  You would think that our city would cater to that--and yet very few places (if any) had extended hours.  I saw several “Cincinnati Welcomes the NAACP” signs and banners--but it certainly didn’t feel very welcoming.

We should have been honored that the NAACP had their Annual Conference here.  We should have showed them what a great city we are. The “hospitality” business had a chance to benefit from this event, as did many other retail environments, Instead they closed their doors.

I guess they were too afraid no one was going to tip them…

  22. .Cincy<>Capell. says:

Jeff Capell is playing Sock Puppet again in #20, but he’s wearing the wrong sock. Again.

    Keep guessing Jeffy.

    Love,

    CincyCapell

  23. outsider78 says:

else47, if I work in Kentucky, should I get to vote in Kentucky?

No but there are many ways to influence Kentucky besides voting are there not?  Any of those ways to increase your representation seems fine to me.

No they are not User fees they are taxes.  User fees would be billed on the percentage of your use like a toll road is.  If you pay Erlanger taxes as an outsider you use less of the services than a resident would and pay the same amount.  And at the same time you are telling them they shouldn’t have a say in how the money is spent?

Perhaps is this is an issue of how you viw the government.  If I give anyone including the government money i do expect say in how it is used.  You seem to have a blind following for the government and whatever they want to spend your money on is fine.

  24. says:

Librariangrrl, I’m not much of a fan of stand-up comedy anymore but occasionally I’ll watch an act on TV. And one of the main pillars of stand-up in America is still the “this group acts this way and that group acts that way” bit. Same as when I was younger and same, I bet, as it will be in 50 years. My guess is that since it is such a taboo to speak of such stereotypes in more formal forums of mass culture (like TV news, etc.), comedy fills the void. I happen to believe that the observation that black people tend to tip less than others or that they tend to wake later than others has some validity to it.  Do white people really walk in the stereotypical ultra-stiff way that Richard Pryor use to suggest in his act? Probably not, but there was some truth to it and thus it was humorous. Im no expert on Schifrin’s schtick but from what I’ve read, though I do think it goes over the line at times, I generally think he has some talent as a satirist.

  25. librariangrrl says:

I am a very firm believer in the idea once you acknowledge something as being wrong, unfair, immoral, unjust, etc. you have the obligation to change it.  Regardless as to whether or not there is any truth to a specific stereotype, you do yourself, the other individual, and society as whole, an injustice when you ascribe to that manner of thinking.

When you slap a judgemental label on an entire ethnicity you are being prejedice and racist.

Even laughing at a joke that is not ill-intentioned but still geared towards judging and / or demeaning a specific group of people is not acceptable.  This type of behavior is wrong because it encourages the propogation of futher ideas and related thinking / socially based behavioral patterns.

Look at it this way.  If a server automatically assumes that black people tip poorly, as soon as they are required to wait on a table of black people the server’s attitude is bound to change.  A server makes 2$ and hour.  If he / she has 5 tables at any given moment and one of those tables is black, and he /she has already determined that the black table is not going to tip to his / her expectations, what type of service do you honestly believe that server is going to give the black table in relation to the other tables he / she is serving?

In this instance, the table of black people has been judged as soon as they walked into the restaraunt.  Is that okay to you?

Now let’s assume I am right in my assessment that the black table recieves service that is of a lesser quality than that of their white peers simply because their server is afraid they are not going to tip properly. Do you really expect them to tip the same as other (white) customers when the service they recieved is of lesser quality?

In as far as satire is concerned, Swift is satire.

Schifrin’s writing has no literary merit and no other purpose than to continue the propogation of hurtful, racist, prejudice sterotypes. It’s a pile of ignorant hate speech not worthy of any literary genre or classification whatsoever! Don’t kid yourself.

  26. says:

Justin, don’t make me go back and pull quotes I think are funny from Schifrin’s(sp?) site

trey, if Schifrin’s so clever and funny it shouldn’t take you any time at all to find a good example of his funny satire. Keep in mind the actual definition of satire though.

Satire is often strictly defined as a literary genre or form; although, in practice, it is also found in the graphic and performing arts. In satire, human or individual vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit.

A very common, almost defining feature of satire is its strong vein of irony or sarcasm, but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. The essential point, however, is that “in satire, irony is militant"[2]. This “militant irony” (or sarcasm) often professes to approve the very things the satirist actually wishes to attack.

  27. says:

Justin, I just named two things I thought had a little humor in them. If you want the exact word-for-word jokes, you’re going to have to look them up yourself.

L-grrl, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so if you find Schifrin’s jokes offensive, so be it. But my objection to Dean, Justin, and possibly your critiques is that you do not apply the same standards to someone as militantly Afro-centric as Nikki X (who, for the record, I don’t really have any strong opinions about either way).  Also, similarily, WLW is portrayed as the epitome of racist hate-speech but for anyone who bothers to listen and apply the same standards to 1230theBuzz, they will find either equal or far worse “hate” speech.

As for tipping, whatever. I’m not involved in the industry so I’ll let them work out the chicken-egg conundrum of which came first: low tips or poor service (if that is even the case).

But as to the original post, I think the Dean may actually have a valid story concerning who the county prosecutor is pal-ing around with. But I think he jumped the gun in trying to connect it to the presidential campaign. Hopefully, the campaigns are spending their time on more important things than policing who some lower level functionary is having lunch with. (By the way, if you have such a passion to find some dirt on a nominee with a connection to a person with uncharitable views of the “other” race, you need go no further than the Democratic nominee’s 20 year mentor, “surrogate father”, and spiritual adviser.) Hold onto your story till the next prosecutor’s election and see if it has any legs then.

  28. Alley Oop says:

All due respect, trey, I think you’re off the mark on the news value of the current story. Know that old saw about frogs adjusting to hot water? The same applies to Cincinnatians who have come to take for the WB for granted. Meanwhile, those unfamiliar with Schifrin’s stuff are appalled when they take a look. For McCain’s local chair to regularly hang with such a creep and to have perhaps traded racist jokes about Obama with him the day before McCain’s NAACP speech? That is tres mal, trey, at least in the reality-based community.

Rather than getting bogged down in a debate of the value of Schifrin the Hut’s work (and be honest, trey, would you pay to read the WB?), I suggest focusing on that admirable public servant and smug guy in the video with the two dudes running interference for him, SW Ohio’s McCain for President 2008 chair, Joseph T. Deters. Last time I looked, the taxpayers covered his salary.

BTW, what is “Jaywalking Joe’s” salary?

  29. Lindnerville says:

Better yet, send them to Joe Deters to enjoy as part of his “personal life.” Besides hanging out with that racist, what other unsavory activities does Joe enjoy on his own time? Get real folks, would you regularly hang out with Jim Schifrin like Deters does? I wouldn’t want to be in the same restaurant, let alone sit at the same table with the guy.

“Haw, haw, Jim. Tell that one again about the monkey and the NAACP. Now have you got anything good for me? Those pricks on the commission have been giving me trouble again about unfair sentencing. I just call it my version of racial quotas, haw haw....”
