The King of Pop has suddenly passed away. So many great songs and it’s hard to imagine any artist ever selling as many records as he did. I remember meeting him briefly on the stage at Madison Square Garden. When he hit the stage the place exploded with excitement. I got to see him perform on that same stage a year later with his brothers. He performed his hits from the Jackson 5 days and his bigger hits from the Thriller era. It’s impossible to pick my favorite song of his, but his music will live on forever.

Dare I admit this in public?
I think it was in fourth grade… I had a Beat It jacket and sequined glove!

Years ago, when I would actually go to karaoke bars with friends, I would some times perform two songs.
1. My Ding-a-ling (Chuck Berry)
2. Beat It (Michael Jackson)

Wow, you even had the glove. I’d love to hear your rendition of Beat It. I don’t usually like karaoke, but it might be fun to have a tribute night. Too bad that Beat It jacket doesn’t fit anymore.

Yes. RIP
Michael and Farrah.
Everybody wanted to be a Charlie’s Angel or be like Mike.
RIP.

You should have a tribute night. Some of my happiest memories were roller skating at Western Rollerama to MJ’s songs! Long live the King!

It’s tough for me to work up much emotion for a child abuser.

1. My Ding-a-ling (Chuck Berry)
2. Beat It (Michael Jackson)
This song combo reminds me of my teenage years, too, when love was at hand!

MJ broke barriers and was the first black man on MTV. It was sad to see his odd behavior and unhealthy fixation with children, but as an artist he was amazing. What 9 year old could sing and dance like him? And then he went on to become the most famous man in the world. That’s pretty good for a kid from Gary Indiana.

“If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.”
R.I.P MJ!

Nancy Nall offers amusing observations of the wailing wall of coverage for The One-Gloved One. Those who prefer mawkish pseudo-sentiment, avert your eyes! http://nancynall.com/2009/06/26/shocked-and-saddened/

This is OUR Marilyn and Elvis!!!
And they just said he played in front of more US and Foreign dignitaries than ANY other performer.
We still all get up and dance at weddings to EVERY MJ song. ALL OF US! AND WE ALL CAN SING HOW MANY SONGS.

Justin,
I saw a special with 98 Degrees performing “Man in the Mirror” at his 30-year music celebration. Sharing the stage with Usher and Luther was an honor as well. It must’ve been an experience of a lifetime to meet a living legend. No one in history has ever come close to having the worldwide appeal that Michael had. People all over the world are mourning the loss. Saying he was the greatest entertainer who ever lived would be limiting the other gifts and talents he possessed. RIP indeed.

A decent song & dance man who wrote a few good songs, Jackson was packaged as a larger-than-life character by the best of the best PR guys. Naturally the cash cow will continue to be milked as we move into the “Tribute/Memorial” stage of this nonsense.
As he disintegrated over the years as a result of untreated mental illness, Jackson’s so-called fans simply accommodated the horror, clucking about the latest plastic surgery that shaved a few more centimeters of nostril from the King of Pop and revving up for the anticipated deeply-profound experience and t-shirt to be purchased during His next world tour. Now they demonstrate their capacity for feeling by squatting around his Hollywood Blvd. star or blogging heartfelt, if mind-numbingly dull elegies.
On the bright side, his nightmare life of abuse, perversion, and sequins provided a worthy unpaid service, that of a mass psychological experiment, one that managed to reveal plenty about those who created him, the insatiable packagers and his “Day of the Locust” fans. Though I would have preferred not to have observed the results of that experiment, I thank Michael Jackson for giving his life to science.

I thought it was JJ Jackson
Didn’t want to break up this thread (and now not in a place to post it) but if anyone interested I did a cartoon about this on my blog.

Dean: when you were in fourth grade MJ was in the bushes watching you.
Justin: MSQ “exploded with excrement”? Yew.

SO it is ok to want to “share your bed with children” as long as you are an amazing artist.

After I read Diana Diamond book titled The Man Who Loved To Much about MJ I got another perspective on MJ. His awful way of picking these little boys was shocking. The man was awful example of what it is to be black in America. He only dated, liked, perfered white women. The pedhipolida of MJ and the bleaching the skin whole thing left me as a black woman feeling uneasy with the man. The music, moves, beats, and love the man created was simply amazing and trailblazing. REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER. WE LOVED U!

Troll#19, thanks for another ignorant post. Obviously nobody said it is OK to share your bed with children. Just like nobody who recognizes the talent and impact that Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis had on our culture is saying it’s OK for grown men to have sex with young teenagers.

Neither one of them had as big of an influence on the world as MJ did and they didn’t just die. They also get celebrated without people talking about the severity of the character flaws.
Of course his behavior with children was very disturbing, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t the greatest entertainer the world had seen. Many great artists had serious personal problems and did thing that were inappropriate. Does that mean they weren’t great artists? I don’t think so.

One of the accusers has now come forward and said there was no molestation and he said it because his father made him do it. He had a conscience check after Michael died. Too bad he didn’t come forward while MJ was still alive. I hope the extortionist father gets some jail time for what they put Michael through.
