McCain Campaign’s Dirty Whistleblower?

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Prosecutor Joe Deters, McCain local rep, linked to racist ramblings

While everyone talks about John McCain’s speech to the NAACP during the national convention here in Cincinnati, the lesser known story concerns the racist ramblings apparently endorsed by his regional campaign chair for Southwest Ohio (and Hamilton County prosecutor)—Joe Deters.  During the primaries, McCain was quick to distance himself from local loudmouth Willie Cunningham after the radio personality referred to Barack Obama with his middle name, Hussein.  But aren’t the disgusting ramblings of Jim Schifrin (pictured to your right) in The Whistleblower more inappropriate than Obama’s full name?  Back in May, The Beacon attempted to contact Joe Deters about his apparent connections to Schifrin.

Deters failed to respond after multiple attempts.

Here is the original letter I sent Deters:

Mr. Deters:

I’m reporting a story about the following item published May 2nd in The Whistleblower, the longtime political tattler newsletter put out by Jim Schifrin, who uses the nom de plume “Charles Foster Kane.” I’d appreciate your answers to some questions.

From: http://thecincinnatusstandard.com/Blower_May_2_2008.htm

Tuesday when Charles Foster Kane and “JayWalking Joe” Deters were having lunch at the Boathouse, the Hamilton County Prosecutor was telling our Beloved Whistleblower Publisher how many yoofs have been arrested since January 2008 along the crack track of the proposed Trolley Folly through the Killing Fields of Over-the-Rhine. You still won’t believe that number. Which is probably why Hess & Eisenhardt would have to armor plate the trolleys.

1) Is it true that you had lunch with Mr. Schifrin as he claims? If so, do you regularly meet with or communicate with him? If so, how often?

As you may know, Mr. Schifrin’s newsletter is filled with racial slurs against African Americans. In fact, the above paragraph is a relatively mild example. For instance, Mr. Schifrin has called Mayor Mallory a “darkie” and referred to Rosa Blackwell as a “mammy.” Mr. Schifrin’s newsletter is also peppered with derogatory remarks against women, gays, and others.

2) What is your reaction to this type of writing?

I look forward to receiving your answers in the next few days.

Sincerely,

The Cincinnati Beacon

Mark Mallory, Mayor

Rosa Blackwell

Christopher Smitherman, President

The Cincinnati Herald

Jim Schifrin

If Deters wants to play with the likes of Schifrin, that’s one thing, but now that he is the regional chair of a major presidential candidate, the game has changed a bit.  McCain was quick to distance himself from Cunningham’s use of Obama’s middle name.  How can the campaign have a chair who won’t distance himself from calling Cincinnati’s first directly elected African American mayor a “darkie”?

Especially given this backdrop of the national NAACP convention.

That’s why I just sent the following email to McCain campaign figures:

To Whom It May Concern:

During the primaries, John McCain distanced himself from local radio personality Willie Cunningham for using Obama’s middle name during an introduction to McCain.  Recently, Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters was named as a regional chair for McCain’s Ohio campaign.

There is an infamous rag sheet that circulates around town called “The Whistleblower,” and it frequently uses racist language—referring to Mayor Mark Mallory as “darkie,” or Superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools Rosa Blackwell as “mammy.” This rag’s writer, Jim Scrifrin, boasts about his relationship with Deters, claiming to have lunch with Deters while receiving information for his rag sheet.

Back in May, we asked Deters about this apparent relationship.  He refused to respond to multiple requests.

Does the John McCain presidential campaign have an opinion on its regional chairs having such apparent relationships with the likes of such offensive and racist language?

Thanks, and I look forward to your reply.

Respectfully,

The Dean of Cincinnati

  1. Slim Pickens says:

Whistleblower delivers accuracies the Enquirer won’t touch, let alone investigate. It can be candid. What a waste when the racial gaming is always the pattern of the print. Not just Schifrin. It comes from contributers hiding behind Charles Foster Kane posting sexist remarks and racial hate speech they cannot deliver openly in their public lives. Jim serves as a magnet for racists locally. He could do much for conservative thought and action without the race baiting.

  2. NtotheC says:

    wow, that dude is husky.

I don’t know much about him, or his politics.  Dean, what is the goal here? To associate these people with the McCain campaign? or to push them off the campaign?  I didn’t agree with people blaming the candidates for what their associates have said, just as i wouldn’t want to be held responsible for some of the things my friends have said.

  3. says:

I don’t think Joe Deters should have ignored my May inquiry.  Is he having lunch with this guy, as Schifrin claims?  Is he feeding him information?

Is it appropriate for the County prosecutor to have such relationships?

Is it appropriate for the McCain Ohio campaign regional chair to have such relationships?

  4. NtotheC says:

    Dean,

I don’t agree with almost anything that Deters says or does.  the guy is a straight up ***hole.  It would not surprise me if he had very inappropriate relationships with racist, homophobic conservatives.

If anything, i think alerting McCain to these relationships will help their campaign get rid of someone that could be a problem.  Which is the right thing to do.  I was just wondering if you were going to suggest that McCain had to come out and denounce a blogger that was friends with someone that got hired by one of his staff members.

Too much time has been spent this year denouncing the words of people that these candidates know.  I’d rather hear about what they think and say than what others do.

  6. Deters Hearts Schifrin says:

A Google keyword search turned up these items in the Whistleblower in which Jim Schifrin claims to be exchanging information with Joe Deters: http://tinyurl.com/59ome8

  7. says:

It just goes to show that racism still exists and people in high places don’t have a problem with it. The fact that local media has allowed this to go on without question just shows how inept they are.

  8. says:

Quit player-hating a guy with some real satirical talent.

  9. number16 says:

so how many more degrees of separation before we get to kevin bacon?

  10. says:

    Trey:

What is the subject of the satire?  Remember, satire aims to fix a societal ill through humor.  Do you expect me to believe that we are better as a society because Schifrin calls our Mayor a “gay darkie”?

No, this is straight parody, ridicule.

  11. Dewey says:

Admit it. You’re just jealous of the Whistleblower’s clout. You have three mentally challenged individuals feeding you scoops(Four, if the one moonbat is off her meds and suffering multiple personalities)…

  12. trey says:

Dean, you honestly don’t find some of his gags funny? I haven’t read the guy for a while but when I do, I usually get a chuckle out of some of his stuff. Some is a little too harsh but still: half-way clever humor is hard to come by and he’s better than 95% of people at it.

Also, number 16 is right: exactly how many degrees of seperation is a presidential candidate accountable for?

Also, I bet the guy is a perfectly civil dude in public. If you didn’t know, people sometimes mock other people when they’re not around. Check out what Jesse Jackson said about Obama when he thought no one could hear him.

  13. Christopher P. Fanny, Esq. says:

    Why Cincinnati remains a backwater.

    1) Neanderthal racists like Schifrin.

    2) A county attorney who has no problem associating with the racist neanderthal and who is willing to lick Schifrin’s seat just to gobble some political crumbs. (Same goes for Slipper Sloat, the most degraded blogger in the area who refuses to denounce Schifrin who feeds news turdlets to Slippery.)

    3) Commenters here who are so far gone they have no problem with 1) and 2). What crisps their bacon is that the Dean dares to speak up to identify how degraded these “prominent” locals really are so they attack his motives.

In any town that had a decent press or any self-respect, this kind of behavior would be considered unacceptable and someone with Deters’ standing wouldn’t dare to associated with a slob like Schifrin. But here in Lindnerville, it’s the one who dares to tag the crap conduct who gets savaged. As we all know, anyone who dares to suggest that Cincinnati isn’t heaven on earth gets told to shut up.

As for the Whistleblower’s alleged clout, don’t make me larf. Responsible media people don’t touch his stuff because, as the Dean proved with the McGurk story, Schifrin makes stuff up.

The only ones happy to see the guy approaching are restaurant owners and possibly Tom Brinkman. Note that in the photo accompanying photo above, Schifrin is wearing a tie with Brinkman’s picture on it!

Send in the clowns? They’re already here. Laughing with you? No, Schifrin - at you.

  14. says:

John McCain’s spokeman for this area is a public official that apparently has lunch with a known racist on a fairly regular basis. Deter’s refuses to deny it and refuses to denounce his friends racist speech. I think that’s very relevent as John McCain comes to town to speak to the NAACP’s National Convention.

Sen. McCain already has a terrible record on civil rights and the choices he makes about which people will represent him speaks to what kind of judgement we can expect from him. Deter’s should denounce this racist language.

trey, I don’t see racial slurs as good humor, unfortuantely you seem to.

  15. says:

    Get a life Justin

  16. anon says:

I find it deplorable about Deters and it might be fun to see McCain fire him (but who is left that isn’t dirty?)

On the other hand, we have WLW operating on the public airwaves with a mandate to abide by community standards exuding his venom and hatred every single day.  Why isn’t he a target of redress?  There are hundreds of corporate sponsors including the Reds and Bengals who sponsor the programming on WLW.  (Why in the world do the black athletes not throw a fit that their teams advertise on this station?)

If CCV can organize to go after City Beat, why can’t we get business owners, ministers and politicians to condemn WLW?

  17. R says:

Oh come on Justine, McCain did stand in the exact spot where MLK’s body landed and said he was sorry while he had 4 blacks guys in bowties holding umbrella’s over him so he wouldn’t get wet.

That’s real progress for some of these clowns.

  18. R says:

Oh come on Justine, McCain did stand in the exact spot where MLK’s body landed and said he was sorry while he had 4 black guys in bowties holding umbrella’s over him so his one hair wouldn’t get wet.

That’s real progress for some of these clowns.

Besides, someone told me that Deters can, for a 100.00 contribution to his campain, get you a GOOJF card Get a 50.00 Multiple felony discount on thursdays for a 500.00 donation.  Unless of course, you have a good suntan.

God this town is nuts.  I can see Microsoft sitting up there in Seatle, going why the heck are we here? good things happenin in Cincinnati. Armoured trolley and everything. Coffee sux but some darn good chilli and a really cool fountain with Boy Genius ‘s head pasted on it.

Wonder who would play Herb, and who would play Less Nessman in the remake?  Re-doing the Turkey drop from the news helicopter at Fountain Square would be histerical.  Dabblers would come down for that.

  19. says:

Also, number 16 is right: exactly how many degrees of seperation is a presidential candidate accountable for?

If McCain wants to be president, what kind of leadership decisions should we expect from his administration?  What kinds of people would be his key leaders?

His campaign has appointed Joe Deters as a regional chair for the Ohio campaign.  Deters apparently has lunch with and feeds information to the racist ramblings of the overblown Jim Schifrin.  Is this the kind of guy who McCain should have in a leadership position?

  20. anon says:

trey: Dean, you honestly don’t find some of his gags funny? I haven’t read the guy for a while but when I do, I usually get a chuckle out of some of his stuff.

    trey, please provide some examples.

  21. anon says:

From today’s Whistleblower by racist Jim Schifrin: http://thecincinnatusstandard.com/Blower_July_16_2008.htm

~~ All of which was discussed at lunch yesterday when Hamilton County Prosecutor “JayWalking Joe” Deters met for lunch with Charles Foster Kane at a packed LaRosa’s in Newport . Besides McCain’s visit and the latest political gossip, other topics our Beloved Whistleblower Publisher discussed with McCain’s newly appointed Southwest Ohio Chairman included all the important items in the news, as well as batting around ideas for upcoming Whistleblower jokes and coverage. Best of all, Deters and Kane were eating like the natives at an Ebonics free restaurant where, unlike at eateries in downtown Cincinnati this week, the giving of gratuities for restaurant service was still being practiced. The best joke at lunch was: Obama lost a lot of points with colored people at his speech Monday night when he promised them all jobs.

  22. NtotheC says:

And why the hell is a Hamilton County elected official taking his lunches in Newport?

I’m sorry, but one thing i expect of any elected official in this city/county is that they support business within that city/county.

With these examples, i’m there with the Dean and Justin on this one.  I can only hope that we get to see some good pictures of McCain and this racist ***hole.

I’ve always strongly disliked Joe “hang ‘em high” Deters.  This is just another reason why.

  23. nuclear87 says:

If McCain wants to be president, what kind of leadership decisions should we expect from his administration?  What kinds of people would be his key leaders?

His campaign has appointed Joe Deters as a regional chair for the Ohio campaign.

Do you really think that a regional chair for one state is a “key leader”?  That is a joke right.  John McCain probably couldn’t pick joe deters out of a lineup.  The regional chairs are typically chosen by the state chair not the presidential candidate.

  24. _Cincy<>Capell_ says:

Dean, keep up the pressure on Deters. His association with the despicable, morbidly obese Schifrin is unacceptable at best. Deters should be made to own up to his feeding gossip to Fat Jimmy. Deters & Schifrin used to meet weekly for lunch at China Gourmet in Hyde Park before that restaurant stopped serving lunch, incidently. The staff there hated Schifrin, they tell me that he was a literal pig who was also cheap and rude too boot. He stopped eating there when they raised the prices after their recent remodeling.

BTW, an interesting item about Schifrin. The guy has never worked a day in his life. His Father (who was a swell guy, by all accounts) owned the old Checkers department store chain here in Cincinnati, and left his son set up for life with several trust funds. I’ve often observed that those who have worked very hard all of their lives and become successful are often decent, generous, humble people. However, their succeeding generations who have been handed everything in life and have never had to work to earn a living are invariably greedy, nasty and vile wretches. Just look at the Linder family for a perfect example of this phenomenon.

PS, I hope that you also CC’ed the Obama campaign when you email the McSame, err, McCain campaign.

  25. Snarffy R Dog says:

  26. DETERS HEARTS RACISTS says:

When Deters isn’t dining with racists, he loves to boogie. From Alex Triantafilou’s Republican county party blog: http://hcrp.blogspot.com/2008/07/mason-mccain-naacp-beer-etc.html

The Dave Mason Band performed at the Festival at Sycamore Township last night. They will also perform at a benefit concert organized by County Prosecutor Joe Deters tonight....

We are planning a show of support for Sen. McCain’s speech to the NAACP. The speech will be carried live on the TV board on Fountain Square on Wednesday. I will more fully blog on this tomorrow, but keep open some time at lunch on Wednesday and come to the square.

Hey Alex, it’s Joe’s turn to bring the cross to burn!

  27. says:

It is pretty sad and outrageous that this kind of ignorant, hateful, sexist and racist speech is condoned in 2008 by people in positions of power in Hamilton County. Is it any wonder that there is a great racial disparity in our criminal justice system? I think not!

The Whistleblowers so called “humor” blows. I think it’s time somebody blew the whistle on all our public servants that see nothing wrong with his disgusting ramblings. Do racist birds of a feather often have lunch together?

  28. says:

    Get a life Justin

Trey, that’s a little petty, don’t you think? I’m with anon on this.

trey: Dean, you honestly don’t find some of his gags funny? I haven’t read the guy for a while but when I do, I usually get a chuckle out of some of his stuff.

    trey, please provide some examples.

Trey, please provide some examples of these “funny gags”. I’d love to see what gives you such a chuckle. (I bet this is where Trey will cut and run!)

  29. serious62 says:

Almost positive that he used ot be a bailiff at the courthouse.  If that wasn’t the position it was something similar.

  30. says:

Thank goodness this Schifrin character isn’t a judge, a cop or a prosecutor. It’s bad enough he writes daily rants filled sexist and racist crap, imagine the horrible affect he could have on the world if he actually had some power.

  33. junebugger says:

    Hello Dean,
To be fair, should you also look at the Mallory connection to Nate Livingston’s blog?
Nate has been seen many times socializing with the Mayor and his idiot brother Dale.
Nate trashes all Mallory opposition. Bolton, Pepper, Hale, Burlew to name a few.
Nate’s ravings about all Mallory opponants and his constant Mallory ties should be explored too.
The Deters lunch is minor compared to the Mallory hatchet child Nate Livingston.
But then, you never seem to notice the true Mallory corruption.

  34. says:

    My Main Man & Jeffre,

Who are you having lunch with? 9/11 truthers - those antisemite, antiAmerican kooks!

  35. says:

No, I am not having lunch with them.  I have never met them.  I have posted a few items they sent me, but I am totally unfamiliar with their alleged anti-semitism.  I would appreciate being show it, and I hereby denounce anti-semitism.

  36. Get The Gunk Out says:

Nutter #34 thinks that the term ‘Neocon’ is anti-Semitic, which he appearently doesn’t even know how to spell.
