Letter to Charter Committee about Proportional Representation

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Dear Charter Committee, Councilmember Bortz, and Councilmember Qualls:

I am doing a story about the NAACP’s decision to pursue an initiative to put Proportional Representation on the ballot in November.  Please let me know the answers to the following short questions:

1.  Did the Executive Committee of the Charter Party (or any committee, for that matter) recently vote in support of the City’s current 9x system?

2.  Does the Charter Party intend to formally join the petition effort with the NAACP?

Thanks, and I look forward to your replies.

Respectfully,

The Dean of Cincinnati

  1. Anthony Lorenzo says:

Any third party that would oppose or take less than a supportive stance to support proportional representation would do well to study a concept known as Duverger’s Law.  Single-member districts, however they are gerrymandered, can’t possibly aid third party movements in representation as easily as Full Representation (proportional representation) systems do.  Also, nothing outperforms in achieving representation for minorities and women.  PR’s time has come for its rebirth in Cincinatti.  I look forward to meeting some of these activists out working hard for this reform in Cincinatti with Fairvote.

Please learn more about Single Transferrable Voting, a proportional voting system at this Web Site about the campaign in Brittish Columbia a couple years ago.
