Hard Truth for Heimlich:  Phil’s Radio Show Gets the Axe!

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Once viewed as a powerful public figure, Phil Heimlich’s downward spiral into impotence and obscurity reached new depths recently as his fringe evangelical Christian radio show got axed from the last station to carry his program—WHKW 1220am The Word in Cleveland.  Despite guests heavily populated by Cincinnati names, like Peter Bronson and Chris Finney, no local stations have been carrying Heimlich’s program, and now even Cleveland has decided to thrust this obstruction from their airways.

We contacted WHKW, and operator Andrea confirmed that Hard Truth’s ball got dropped on December 31st.  But as of this posting, Heimlich has failed to face the truth—at least online, as his website still advertises his no-longer extant time-slot.  The Word replaced him with In Touch Ministries.

So what will be Heimlich’s next maneuver?

Peter Bronson recommends Phil on the defunct Hard Truths website:  “Phil is a great speaker who does a good job applying Biblical principles to everyday life and ethical choices. He knows the difference between government and God, and can share valuable insights about both worlds.”  As the following video shows, maybe Phil’s looking to get some gigs giving inspirational talks?

It takes a special inspiration to give these kinds of talks, especially when no one is listening!

If, by chance, you didn’t catch the live streaming feed from Cleveland, and you feel like you missed something, you can still find December’s programs at Phil’s website.  Looking for more?  The site offers the following (misspelled) suggestion:  “To obtain shows prior to the above dates, pleasee contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).”

Praise the Lord, for he is a just and mighty God !

    Phil’s rhetoric chokes U.S. !

He that is first, shall be last ?

  2. Barbara Anne says:

The scarey part of this- Phil’s show was one of the better RIGHT WING shows out there!! I actually listened to a few of them- and then compared them to some of the crap that is on local radio-WLW’s Hatemonger Willie- and then some of the other God radio- And Damn-Phil wasn’t that bad! It wasn’t as toxic as it could have been- I was actually shocked!

But then aqain- it is poetic justice that he can’t even realize that he has gotten canned from the only station that was carrying the show! And to top it off- his public speaking en-gag-ments….On what- how I fell from a named politician to now a cancelled radio show host? OH PLEEZE Phillie- go practie law with Chrissy and the boys- if they will have you. Or better yet- why not get together with Stevie Chabot and start a new firm? The 2 L’s????

Which only leads me to ask- so what is Phil Living on these days- his campaign money? Just wondering….

  3. .Cincy..Capell. says:

    BBBWWWWAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

Filthy Phil eats it again! No more Wingnut Welfare for Phil.

  4. Theresa Evans says:

Hey I guess he should be happy that Congress passed a new bill that will allow his kids to have healthcare NOW!!! He may HAVE to apply for the Ohio CHIPS program for his kids to have healthcare- now that is justice- taking from the “liberals”!!!!!

HE HE HE HE HE HE

  5. anon says:

My thoughts and prayers are with Heimlich. Hopefully he has learned that no one man can do God’s work thru gov’t office - we are all in this together, and by working together for all, we do God’s work.

Learning hard lessons is difficult, I hope he comes out well on the other end.

  6. Chris Fanny says:

I hope he comes out well on the other end

Now that he’s been s**t-canned by Radio Jesus, looks like Phil just came out the other end.

Dean, thanks for posting Heimlich’s bizarre promo video. It’s worth watching just to get a peek into this bozo’s psyche as he drifts into obscurity.

  7. army59 says:

You all should be ashamed.  Never in my life have I ever rejoiced at someone losing a job.

  8. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

This wasn’t a job; it was an exercise in vanity.

  9. .Cincy..Capell. says:

Rejoice? Hmmm, let me think about that. I don’t think that I’m quite rejoicing, per se.

The Germans have an old proverb, “Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude (denn sie kommt von Herzen)” which translates as “Schadenfreude is the greatest joy (because it comes from the heart)”.

Yes, Schadenfeude, that’s what I’m feeling. Definitely.

  10. long98 says:

This wasn’t a job; it was an exercise in vanity.

    \
This website is an exercise in vanity.  When you get receive money for something it is a job.  I am sorry that no one every taught you the difference.

What would have been the proper way for someone who disagreed with you to celebrate the end of the beacon print edition?

It makes you a small person to be glad someone’s startup venture or job failed.  You can’t see past your hatred of Heimlich to see that.

  11. anon says:

I meant what I said earlier, and I agree with Amy, when we celebrate his humiliation, we lower ourselves to the very conduct that drew our criticism. With a little help and self-evaluation from US, maybe he will become a better man.  With our hatred, we will only guarantee he will dig in his heels to protect his ego.

I hope he finds a better way.

  12. Oh Please! says:

    Amy,
How did you feel when Don Imus called the Women’s Basketball team from Rutger’s Nappie Headed Ho’s and he lost his contract and then his show? Give me a break. What do you know about the broadcast industry? Having a radio show that is syndicated is NOT A JOB.

When Phil started this little show- which I agree- wasn’t bad for your right winger believers- he was on 3 or 4 stations and then it dwindled down to 1.

If you are such a believer- then why aren’t you jumping on the bandwagon- call ClearChannel- ask them to pick up the show and see if they will distribute it to some of their smaller markets? or better yet- put it on in his HOMETOWN.

But this isn’t about losing a job- it was about him not being able to keep his self promotion of his usual bs going.

But if you want to help out- make the calls and get him on the air someplace!!!

  13. Annie says:

Losing a job….well- welcome to my world Phil! I’ve been out of work now for 2 years and I’ve been actively searching daily sending out over 400 resumes, working with headhunters and my only option is to move, which is difficult with a HS student. At least if he HAD to, he and his wife could practice law with a firm and he has a name to get a job!!

So- Phil has become part of the great American stats- Big Deal Amy- get over it- and get over yourself.

  14. Tom Callinan is not a horse's ass says:

Eek, it’s the attack of the Short Memory Slaves!

During his council and county reign of error, Phil Heimlich sold out county assets, mucked up the Banks deal, appointed incompetent cronies to county jobs, tried to eliminate civil and First Amendment rights of his constituents, and more, all financed by his deep-pocket sponsors - the Lindners, Richard Farmer, and scores of others. Then voters decided they’d had enough, his political career went into a ditch, so his fair weather financiers fled the sinking SS Heimlich. (And, hey, what happened to all that unspent campaign cash?)

Heimlich then shopped around, but nobody would hire him, so he made a stab at so-called Christian talk radio. It looks like not even that crowd of holy hustlers want him.

Now come some noble scolds to attack The Beacon for reporting that Heimlich the hack has become even more of a has-been. They allege that poking fun at this shakedown artist is somehow degrading.

What you have on display here is a classic example of the slave mentality that explains why abusive people often achieve power. These people are bitches to authority. Does it bother them that the Phil Heimlichs out there enjoy nothing more than maneuvering their submissive tushies? Who knows, who cares? All I see is a few wankers attacking a news source that had the guts to consistently take on Heimlich when he was a powerful political force and allowed the public to get a better look at the man. Who can forget Phil repeatedly breaking the 50-yard dash record as he ran from attempted Beacon-cam interviews?

Oh well, as much fun as that was, it looks like Heimlich is finally in mothballs. Can’t wait to see who’s next for a turn in the barrel here at Cincinnati’s bestest blog.

  15. son58 says:

Yes, Schadenfeude, that’s what I’m feeling. Definitely.

Many studies have shown that it is those with low self esteem that have such feelings.  So it is the fact that you are a loser that feels sorry for yourself that produces your Schadenfeude.  Since you are unable to do things well yourself the only way you can look good is if others fail.  Talk about it in group next time ok

  16. Dewey says:

I don’t think Heimlich *HAS* to work. He is a trust fund baby.

Like others on this site, he has too much time on his hands. Time to think up plans using other people’s money.

  17. Bongo says:

son58: Many studies have shown that it is those with low self esteem that have such feelings.

Hey son58, are there also studies showing that “people who post comments claiming that studies exist but don’t provide any documentation have a tendency to pull information from out of their southbound anatomy”?

  18. Citizens Against Joe Deters says:

Tom Callinan is a horse’s ass. That I know for sure.

Don’t know much about Phil Heimlich…but trust what the Beacon reports.

  19. Coast Is Toast says:

Son58- Chris “Kiss My Fanny” Finney, is that you?

  20. fire86 says:

That or else it is common knowledge among most people and I didnt think a citation was necessary-  but here you go.

How does it make you feel. lol

In the media we are often confronted with reports about the misfortunes of others. Hence, an important question is how we react to the mishaps or setbacks of others. We may often feel sympathy, but sometimes we experience pleasure or so-called Schadenfreude following another’s misfortune. Frijda (1988) argues that an event will only elicit positive emotions when it serves self-relevant motives. In line with this notion, we argue that another’s misfortune may serve people’s striving for a positive self-evaluation. Accordingly, two experiments show that people experience more schadenfreude following another’s misfortune in the media after failure feedback on a self-relevant task rather than when no feedback (Study 1) or success feedback (Study 2) is provided. Moreover, Study 2 shows that this effect is stronger for individuals with chronic low self-esteem, thereby providing further evidence for a self-enhancing motive underlying the experience of schadenfreude following another’s misfortune in the media.

And BTW i dotn like heimlich very much and never listened to his show.  My only point is that you should be ashamed of yourself for being glad someone is out of work.  Maybe you will look inward and see why- maybe you won’t but at least you were told

  21. Bongo says:

son58 stated “many studies” and then fire86 posted a link to a related paper. I quick-Googled and was unable to identify if and where this paper was published.

fire86? son58? car54(where are you)? If a citation for this study exists, can one of you scholars provide it to the class? Also, would welcome citations to those “many” other studies.

    Does anyone else hear crickets…?

  22. Philitio says:

Are there any studies about politicians (like Phil) that get asked serious questions and instead resort to personal attacks?

  23. Tom Callinan is not a horse's ass says:

Thank you Philitio for posting the link to that video! I’d forgotten that one. It’s one of the Dean’s best.

Everybody here, especially those attacking the Dean for kicking poor Phil when he’s down, don’t miss the part in the middle when Phil tries to humiliate the Dean by trying to make fun of him for being unemployed. A few months later this swaggering bully got voted out of office and has been scuffling ever since.

Now he’s unemployed. What goes around comes around. How’s it feel, Phil?

  24. Funky Butt says:

Ultimate irony for Heimlich. The Beacon’s the only media outlet that covers him anymore.

    Eat fork, Phil-face.

  25. anon says:

I am in no way attacking the Dean, Heimlich is a piece of work and certainly deserves what he’s getting.  But the punishment has been dished out, the Dean helped to assure that, as well he should have.  Let Heimlich figure things out.

  26. Afraid of Phillie? says:

    Hell no?

I confronted him when he was on City Council and when he was playing Commish!
And who is making fun of the truth?

If you really think that his show is worthy of being broadcast- start calling the media outlets and help him out! Listen to his show from his website and you decide if he should have lost his only contract. And is you think he should continue- call Clear Channel- the local Media Monopoly and tell them to pick his show up!

These shows are syndicated- he is NOT EMPLOYED-HE IS A CONTRACTED EMPLOYEE- who lost his contract.

And if he is ever erected-oops-elected again- I will gladly sign my name in and confront him again. I AM NOT AFRAID OF PHIL IN PERSON OR ON PAPER!!!

And I agree- he did make fun of the Dean-Karma Phil- Karma.

same page that i linked to as far as where it was presented.  I am too lazy to go through and find you more articles but here it is from the New York Times

“Research has shown that people with low self-esteem are more susceptible to schadenfreude than those whose self-regard is high.”

Heimlich was no better for attacking Jason than Jason is for posting this about Heimlich.  An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.  I mean are you really surprised that a politician would have self esteem problems?  You do realize you that laughing at heimlich losing his work is no different than heimlich making fun of Jason right?  Congrats on sinking to the level of the person who you see as so bad

  28. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

That’s a nice theory—that we laugh at Heimlich because we are comparing ourselves to him—but it is just a theory.  There are plenty of other humorous elements here:  the situational irony of him once being photographed with an axe, mixed with the verbal irony of the phrase “got the axe.”  That’s great stuff!

Being photographed with and axe and the irony of getting the axe means nothing if Heimlich didn’t lose his radio show.  So it always goes back to laughing at someone who has fallen down.  You find that appropriate and I don’t.  The issue is larger than phil heimlich.

If i ever found myself happy that someone lost a job or the fact they failed at something I would be ashamed.  You should be too.  Congrats on being no better then Heimlich than he was to you. Is that where you envisioned your life goin or did you always want to be like the people you despise?

  30. Best Laugh says:

For the sake of discussion, let’s make this distinction: schadenfreude is taking pleasure in the misfortune of people who have done you no harm and revenge is taking pleasure in the misfortune of people who have harmed you.

With full knowledge of the consequences of his actions and for no purpose other than personal gain, Phil Heimlich intentionally harmed me and my family. I’m not going to elaborate here. He knows what he did and my family knows what he did. The lower he falls, the better it makes us feel. As the man said, revenge is sweet. And guess what? Here’s a study that explains the response: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/08/0827_040827_punishment.html

Do we want Heimlich or his family to suffer physical pain? Absolutely not. But according to this study, it is <u>unhealthy</u> to deny us the satisfaction of observing him get a taste of what he dished out to us:

“A person who has been cheated is [left] in a bad situationwith bad feelings,” said study co-author Ernst Fehr, director of the Institute for Empirical Research in Economics at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. “The person would feel even worse if the cheater does not get her or his just punishment.”

In other words, by running this “Heimlich Gets the Axe” item, The Beacon is providing us (and probably others) with a therapeutic service. Therefore, in the interests of facilitating the recovery process, we look forward to the next installment.

  31. The Great Drake Swindle says:

Control - Phil, is that you?

Console yourself with all the studies that you want, you’re still a corrupt, hypocritical tool and you are getting EXACTLY what you deserve. Shadenfreude indeed!

Your tone here is telling, given the nature of your alleged indignation.  Do you think you are better than me?  Does leaving anonymous comments with your rhetorical righteousness make you feel better about your perceived moral superiority?

Why do you have such a need to make yourself feel better by chastising me?  Do you suffer from low self-esteem?

  33. not31 says:

My hope for you is that you and the other posters is that you all take a moment and realize the error of cheering someone’s job loss.  Is that truly where you want to end up with your life?

You in particular seem like someone that should have the knowledge that you are turning into what you supposedly hate.

Do I think i am better than you- absolutely not.  That doesn’t mean that I am incapable of pointing out where you are making a mistake and doing so in a loud and public way.  Many people have done so to myself as I have gone through life.  It doesn’t mean that those people found themselves superior towards me they just provided to me the opportunity to step back and look again at a situation and I realized why I was acting like I was.  You can choose to do that here or you can keep on cheering Heimlich’s departure from his job.  Feel free to give u a glimpse at your character.

  34. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

I just don’t think that the loss of a low- or no-paying vanity gig for a trust fund baby like Phil means anything like what you suggest.

  35. Barbara Broadcast says:

What part of THIS WASN’T A JOB- don’t you people get! This was a syndicated Radio program. Look up in google how they work to understand. Phil didn’t lose a job- he lost his only remaining station- and they probably cut him due to LOW RATINGS.

Broadcasting is run like a real business believe it or not!

And I agree- Phil and his wife both have law degrees and both of them can get work-hell if Deters can work for Stan the Man- and he has his Daddy to help. So give it a break. He isn’t going to lose his house. Please. Give it a rest.

The man has the ability to work, his wife has the opportunity to work, they have a better chance of being able to work more so than 3/4’s of the rest of the city. So cut the crap.

It is’t a job- he lost a contract. And if he thinks his show is so damn good-then he has nothing to worry about-he can find another station to pick up his show!

But he wasn’t handed a pink slip this time. Cut it out!
