Goodbye to Tom Callinan?  Positions Shuffle Inside The Enquirer

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Last April, we published this piece about Tom Callinan’s one-time blog called “Letters to the Editor.” (His short-lived blog was a follow-up to the “Grandma in Iraq” blog, where The Enquirer got blasted for not fully disclosing that Grandma was an Army employee spreading pro-war propaganda.) In one post, Callinan actually described the process whereby well-connected and influential people in town can develop a relationship with him for making news.  At that time, critics began questioning whether Callinan had what it takes to serve as an Executive Editor.  According to my sources, Gannett has finally played catch-up—and Callinan is out as Executive Editor, perhaps taking that first step on the road toward obscurity.

My sources have sent me an email where Callinan appears to be describing the latest reassignments:

As we continue our transition from a traditional newsroom into what we are calling the Local Information Center, here are some organizational changes.

My title becomes Editor and Vice President/Content and Audience Development, reflecting my involvement in work beyond The Enquirer news operation.  The Local Information Center will involve more collaboration between The Cincinnati and Kentucky Enquirers, the Community Press and Recorder newspapers, CiN Weekly and our magazines, and Cincinnati.com and related new media projects.  I will not be moving from my office, but likely spending less time in the 19th floor conference room.

Managing Editor Hollis Towns will be involved in all that the Local Information Center does as well—with particular focus on online challenges.  But to reflect his primary responsibility to ensure a strong Enquirer remains our top priority his title becomes Executive Editor of The Enquirer.

What does it mean to be “Editor and Vice President/Content and Audience Development”?  The jumbled phrase hardly sounds like a title whatsoever.  Is this a promotion, or movement into some obscure intermediary job that serves as a springboard to relocation or termination?

Ask your sources about Buchanan.  Is this another one of her moves to keep Gannett’s focus off of her “results”.  She’s the one that Gannett really needs to catch up too.  And, according to rumors they may not be too far behind as her departure’s been expected for months.

  2. Shame on Callinan!!! says:

Who knows what this means for Callinan, but I don’t know how these people sleep at night.

Putting children at risk with their misinformation about using the “Heimlich” manuever for drowning and then not correcting it when it has been pointed out that the medical community doesn’t agree.

They also have allowed 3CDC to spend our childrens money by misrepresenting the costs of the Fountain Square deal that gave away our annual revenue from the garage to the tune of over $100 million. They have yet to tell the truth.

Putting out war propaganda from a “grandma” so we can feel warm and fuzzy about our sons and daughters being sent to die for Halliburton, Becthel, GE and the rest of the war profiteers.

    Shame on you Callinan!!!
