Media Release from Josh Springs, Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless
Yesterday Channel 12 reported on the increase in people sleeping in front of the Hamilton County Courthouse. It has been reported by one of our outreach workers that around thirty-five people are sleeping nights in front of the courthouse. This report made the courthouse and those who work there out to be the victims in this situation.
It is shameful that Channel 12 reported this story in this manner. The victims in this situation are the thirty-five people who are forced to be homeless. The system has failed them and they no longer have a place to call home. We know that the primary cause of homelessness in this country is a lack of affordable housing. We do not have a system that ensures all have access to affordable housing. We also know that about sixty percent of men who are homeless in Cincinnati work, they simply do not make enough money to afford housing. This means we need a vast increase in affordable housing and living wage jobs.
Through those who do street outreach to people who are homeless we are coordinating an effort to communicate with those in front of the courthouse. We plan to figure out what specifically led to this increase and offer solutions. We plan to work with people such that housing becomes an accessible and maintainable option.
Homelessness is a travesty at any and every time in a country of plenty. The fact is that we as a country have the power to end homelessness here. This is something we can do. Stories such as the one reported on Channel 12 simply further false opinions of those who are homeless. It is the responsibility of media sources to present information that is factual and helpful. Channel 12 has pathetically put forth a story that shows ignorance, a need to propagandize to get viewers and is ultimately a harmful and exploitive story. The title of the story is “Homeless Take Over Courthouse.” This title proclaims that somehow those who are not housed have hindered the lives of people who are housed. The fact is that our system has hindered the lives of about 3.5 million people who experience homeless each year in the United States.

Thanks josh for making the media release.
We saw the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well we just had to laugh
We saw the photographs
He blew his mind, working on cars
He didn’t notice that the times had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Ford.
Come Together, Right Now.

“We know that the primary cause of homelessness in this country is a lack of affordable housing.”
Let’s be honest. The primary cause for homelessness in this country is addiction coupled with lack of self discipline and personal responsibility. The “system” has not failed these people; they have failed the system.

No, the victims are the humans who are forced to live in conditions because this society has chosen to place faith in that man-made illusion of value called the dollar.
Society can prop-up corporate entities, yet abandon the least among U.S.
Where is the min. safety-net ?
Life is a game and buildings are winning against human life.
Misplaced priorities.
PATHETIC !

I guess I just imagined all those social service agencies and shelters that are set up specifically to help these folks.

“I guess I just imagined all those social service agencies and shelters that are set up specifically to help these folks.”
The facts would suggest that they serve less than needed, else, there would be NO NEED to sleep at the court-house step.
Your imagination is less than candid or credible.
