EXPOSED! Two sets of rules on Fountain Square
Sunday, October 05, 2008 |
So last weekend, I was on Fountain Square, with my son—and I also happened to have Justin’s video camera. The Junior Dean was using his shoes to make an “X” in the dirt/gravel area. This really upset an orange-shirt-wearing Downtown Ambassador. What happened next was weird, but ultimately enlightening.

Hamilton County Double Standard with Timothy Reed Case
Friday, October 03, 2008 |
Timothy Reed was arraigned today in Hamilton County Court before Magistrate Amy Searcy at 12:30 p.m. Magistrate Searcy gave Timothy Reed a $500,000 straight bond for child endangerment. Timothy Reed is an African American male, 19 years of age, and father of the infant in question. Mr. Reed says he went asleep and when he woke up, his infant was injured. It is reported that he believes that the other children (toddlers) in the home harmed the child while he was sleeping. The key question is: did he intentionally hurt his child?

Friday, September 26, 2008 |
COAST calls on members urgently to contact their members of Congress to oppose “worst idea of our lifetime”
COAST calls on its members to contact their Congressmen and Senators immediately to oppose the latest $700 Billion bailout for America’s richest citizens proposed by President Bush. The vote in Congress presently is anticipated Thursday or Friday. To date, the actual language of the largest bailout bill in American history, which Brit Hume of Fox News says will be voted by the most unpopular Congress in American history at “historic speed,” has not even been presented.

Where are the dangerous intersections?
Tuesday, September 23, 2008 |
Councilmember Crowley and others who wish to install red-light cameras would have us believe this is a public safety issue. But I have not heard of any councilmember releasing the location of intersections to potentially receive these devices. Wouldn’t a simple, no-cost way to improve safety involve at least telling us the location of dangerous intersections?

Ron Paul, Ralph Nader and other third party candidates endorse common agenda
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 |
Today third party candidates joined Congressman Ron Paul to endorse a common agenda that stands up for the US Constitution by ending illegal wars, and protecting the privacy and civil liberties of all persons under US jurisdiction. They also called for an immediate halt to the increase in the national debt, an end to corporate subsidies and taxpayer bailouts of corporations, and to start aggressively pursuing prosecution of corporations that commit crimes and frauds.

Water District Conspiracy? Berding asks for permission from Rager
Sunday, September 07, 2008 |
In this email exchange below, Councilmember Jeff Berding asks David Rager for permission before sending an email to Tom West concerning issues surrounding the secretive plans to move towards a “Water Disctrict,” that some feel could be the first step towards privatizing water in Cincinnati. It’s noteworthy how Berding needs Rager’s permission to send an email. Also, it’s noteworthy that Berding has apparently edited Rager’s response. Why wasn’t Rager’s unedited response included in my records request?

Journalist Amy Goodman Unlawfully Arrested At RNC
Monday, September 01, 2008 |
ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here. Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfully detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman’s crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Dissent at the Conventions
Friday, August 29, 2008 |
One convention down, one convention to go. Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night concluded four days of speeches, parties, and Democratic celebration over their nominee for President of the United States. Beginning on September 1, the Republicans will roll into St. Paul, Minnesota for four days of the same to try to convince Americans that John McCain and Sarah Palin are the duo to lead this country for the next four years. While there has been much media focus on what has happened inside the Pepsi Center in Denver this past week, it is also important to focus on what happened outside the Pepsi Center, in the streets of Denver, in order to give the public a full view of everything that transpired during the DNC.

Sunday, August 17, 2008 |
Cincinnati Progressive Action (CPA), the activist human rights organization, has endorsed the NAACP’s petition campaign to put Proportional Representation (PR) on the November ballot. With PR, voters don’t just vote for 9 City Council candidates, but rank their candidates, a process that ensures that voters’ top choices have a greater chance of success.

Blackle - Saving energy for Google searches
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 |
Blackle. It’s the black Google, and I’m not talking about race—I mean the literal color black. Black web sites apparently use less energy than white web sites, so when you interface with Google searches through Blackle, you save energy! Check it out. Read more on Blackle’s ”about page.”

Hip Hop, ‘Nati Style - Delvec: Big Splash or Belly Flop?
Sunday, August 10, 2008 |
Cincinnati’s Delvec (not to be confused with “Chico Delvec") has released a MySpace LP featuring lame hip hop tracks that sound like an old man trying to recapture his childhood rather than the spirit and philosophy of youth typically showcased by the hip-hop genre. It is unlikely that Delvec will be offered a record deal anytime this century, and he gives Cincinnati hip-hop as a whole a bad name, suggesting our town has no musical or lyrical talent whatsoever.

Kevin Flynn, Council Candidate for ‘09, on the issues
Thursday, August 07, 2008 |
Kevin Flynn has recently updated the “Issues” section of his early campaign website for Cincinnati City Council, 2009. (Sorry, no direct link since his site uses frames.) Flynn’s first two issues are a 50/50 mix, a sampling of an original sounding idea with some of the ordinary cheerleading for public safety. (Has anyone ever run on a platform urging the City to become less safe?)

Tuesday, August 05, 2008 |
Yes, it’s that time of year again—candidates are already gearing up for the Cincinnati City Council race in 2009. And Kevin Flynn, with the early support of both the Charter Party and his daughter (who is currently quoted on the front page proclaiming “Yay vote for my daddy!!"), already has campaign t-shirts and a web page for an early start to what promises to become a long campaign season.

Tom Brinkman, or “The boy who cried ‘pig‘“
Thursday, July 31, 2008 |
Recently, we asked Tom Brinkman what he thought about the racist language employed regularly by Jim Schifrin in The Whistleblower. Brinkman seems like the perfect candidate to get on the record about Schifrin, since Schifrin walks around with a “Taxkiller” Tom Brinkman necktie. Instead of answering our questions, Brinkman just called Schifrin a “pig.” But now it seems that calling “pig” is somewhat of a habit for Tom.

Corporations continue shifting contributions to corporate Democrats
Saturday, July 26, 2008 |
According to the Wall Street Journal, for the first time since 1994 corporations are beginning to shift back to giving more money to the Corporate Democrats. They say that corporations contribute to candidates that look out for their interests regardless of party affiliation. Money buys influence in the best democracy money can buy and continues to stifle the voices of the American people.

Dreaming about “off the grid”
Monday, July 21, 2008 |
It seems to me that $40,000 - when viewed as a 15 year mortgage—would equate to monthly payments relatively close to my monthly energy bill. So I wish technology was to the point that a combination of solar panels and geothermal could get me totally off the grid for $40,000. That way, I’d just pay what I currently pay for the next 15 years, and then have free energy!

Hamilton County Performance Dashboard, Mid-Year 2008
Thursday, July 17, 2008 |
Attached is the most recent report from Hamilton County Administration on the progress made on the jail front. As you can see, in spite of the doom and gloom threats during the sales tax campaign, there still have been no early releases of male inmates. Early releases for female inmates have dropped significantly as well. All of this is in spite of the loss of 400 jail spaces in Butler County.

Chris Bortz on PR, 9x, and Cincinnati Voting
Monday, July 07, 2008 |
Guest article by Councilmember Chris Bortz
The current “at large” or 9X system really just means that every member of Council represents the entire city. Some, including Mr. Berding, have suggested that it would be better to have a number of districts or a combination of at large and districts. I am opposed to districts, but would support a system where each seat is identified and voted on individually. So, I might run for seat #7 against that specific incumbent. Such a system creates more direct voter accountability, but avoids the potential for district to district horse trading at the expense of the big picture.

PR v. 9x: Can Charter have it both ways?
Thursday, July 03, 2008 |
Christopher Smitherman, President of the Cincinnati NAACP and former member of the Charter Committee, recently announced an NAACP sponsored petition drive to put Proportional Representation (PR) on the ballot for how City Council gets elected. It seems like the Charter Party, who for years has advocated for PR, would be natural allies. But what is the Charter Party’s official position on the question of PR?

Rumor has it “Blasphemy” is banned at The Enquirer
Wednesday, July 02, 2008 |
Being an established media activist, I hear all kinds of rumors. And, depending on their nature, and how credible I find the individuals who pass these things along, sometimes I use them as springboards for inquiry, and sometimes I just run with the stories to see where they lead. This latest is about a poor Enquirer employee who had decorated her cubicle—trying to bring humor to a dreary office environment—and who found herself at the focus of anonymous complaints that forced her to remove decorations from her workspace!

Thank you for taking a look at the handicapped accessibility issue at the FSQ parking garage. Fountain Square is Cincinnati’s front porch, and as such it is in the interest of every Cincinnatian to make sure we put out the proper welcome mat not only to fellow Cincinnatians, but to visitors of the Queen City.

Hey, Malia! Just the facts, please.
Sunday, June 15, 2008 |
Malia Rulon, Washington Correspondent
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Dear Ms. Rulon:
From your article today, Chabot, Schmidt Appear to Stretch Truth in Letters:
(Dr. Victoria) Wulsin, a physician, was hired in 2004 by the Heimlich Institute....
This appears to be a false statement, one which merits a fact-check and, if necessary, a prompt published correction. I’ll explain.

ATBWT: The Black Blog is Back!
Thursday, June 12, 2008 |
The Google-imposed censors have been removed from The Cincinnati Black Blog, and now Livingston’s site is back online for the world to see! Recently, Livingston’s blogging has gone from political and media activism to what you might call “personal activism.” Facing a custody battle over his children, where the mother has enlisted the help of Legal Aid, Livingston has used his platform to advocate for his own position. I have not seen a blog used for this kind of self-advocacy before.
