The 60th Anniversary of the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict
Wednesday, May 07, 2008 |
In the US of Amnesia most people don’t understand our world because they don’t know much about history. When Americans ask ‘why do they hate us’ in regards to anti-American sentiment around the world, it’s important that people know it’s not because of our ever decreasing “freedoms”, it’s because of our Imperial foreign policy. Here’s an article from the BBC that gives some background.

Heimlich Hard Truths: The politics of Christian talk radio
Thursday, May 01, 2008 |
When I saw yesterday’s item in The Daily Bellwether about Phil Heimlich becoming a right-winged talk show host, I was a bit surprised. Then, when I followed the link to his show’s website, I didn’t know if I should laugh out loud or feel very afraid. But when I discovered that his web domain is owned by ”Citizens for Heimlich,” I just had to wonder at the political maneuvering behind all these new developments.

Cannabis Liberation Day
Thursday, April 24, 2008 |
"One of the problems that the marijuana-reform movement consistently faces is that everyone wants to talk about what marijuana does, but no one ever wants to look at what marijuana prohibition does. Marijuana never kicks down your door in tbe middle of the night. Marijuana never locks up sick and dying people, does not suppress medical research, does not peek in bedroom windows.”

Thomas Luken on Chris Dole and the Democratic Nomination
Saturday, April 19, 2008 |
written by Tom Luken
198 of us newly elected precinct executives are gathering on Monday to proudly organize the Hamilton County Democratic Party for the next biennium. We are proud to follow in the footsteps of Harry Truman, the patron of the little guy, and JFK who set the standard for civic contributions in selflessness in the words “Ask what you can do for your country.”

Will Chesley Plead the 5th in Kentucky?
Sunday, April 13, 2008 |
Last week, we posted this item about how local media tagged attorney Stan Chesley as a man of character while Lexington media named him in the fen-phen lawsuit, which has been called “the largest theft in Kentucky history.” Now the Lexington Journal-Courier has another update, though you’d never know from reading The Enquirer, or even the Business Courier.

A failure of US centralized banking?
Tuesday, April 01, 2008 |
Guest post by Scott Ryan
I am not a conspiracy buff and I still think that the U.S. markets are the strongest (because they are the freest markets) and I truly believe that the powers that be will prevent a crash at the taxpayer’s expense (worldwide taxpayer), but the question becomes, how much can the average taxpayer afford?

Busted lying again? Shame on you Hillary Clinton!
Friday, March 28, 2008 |
Hillary Clinton claimed Obama wasn’t being honest when his campaign literature criticized her record of support for NAFTA. She was in blue collar Ohio claiming that she had always been against her husband’s job killing and union smashing trade agreement, but was later busted by Tim Russert in a debate when he pointed out that she supported NAFTA as late as 2004. Now the corporate lawyer’s been busted lying again about her record. Or did she just “misspeak”?

Support Our Troops? Listen to what they say about 5 years in an Iraq quagmire!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 |
As we mark the 5th anniversary of the bipartisan Iraq quagmire that has no end in sight, we should listen to the voices of US veterans and active-duty soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. Here are eyewitness accounts of atrocities committed by US troops during these $3 trillion dollar occupations. The event was modeled after the 1971 Winter Soldier Hearings from the Vietnam War.

Not Dumbed Down? Think Again! OGT slashes instructional time in Cleveland
Sunday, March 16, 2008 |
How can a test cause a massive dumbing down of high school curriculum? So many have anecdotal responses to such questions, but how often can these instances of dumbness get documented? Thanks to this article from The Cleveland Plain Dealer, we can see one obvious example of a high school changing everything due to state-mandated, high-stakes tests.

Media Ignores Reason for Foreclosures
Saturday, March 08, 2008 |
Loss of good jobs through ‘free’ trade is at heart of foreclosure epidemic
By Mark Anderson
With the mortgage crisis reaching critical mass, it’s time for Americans to see past the media reports that are keeping them in the dark. Take Shaker Heights, a suburb of Cleveland. Foreclosures have emptied most of the houses. This town was “ravaged by the subprime mortgage crisis roiling the United States,” stated a typical mainstream news report.

Judgment Day Is Here? Here’s a closer look at the Clinton record
Sunday, March 02, 2008 |
Though Hillary has only been in the Senate for about 6 years she would like us to include her 8 years as first lady in the White House as experience also. While you wouldn’t consider being the husband or wife of a brain surgeon a qualification to operate on you, it is true that Bill will be her top advisor (behind union buster Mark Penn) and many say a co-president. Voters should consider the Clinton-Gore record before voting, so here it is.

What’s that giant sucking sound? Clinton & NAFTA, the Job killing trade agreement
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 |
Bill Clinton lobbied, with big business, NAFTA and GATT into law against labor, consumer, environmental and human-rights groups. The deal sent millions of good paying jobs overseas. Hillary supported free trade until very recently. Now that she’s campaigning in blue collar Ohio and trying to get union support, she’s claiming that she was always secretly critical of the deal and that she’s been opposed to it ever since she started running for the Senate, but she’s lying.

It is official: Ralph Nader’s running for President!
Sunday, February 24, 2008 |
Nader has fought for consumers for over 40 years. In the 60s his work on car safety led directly to seat belts and shatter-resistant glass being fitted in every American car. In the 70s he built a reputation for dealing with issues including workers’ rights, public safety, the environment and the influence of corporations. He made his announcement on Tim Russert’s ”Meet the Press”.

Projected Final Delegate Count - DNC 2008
Friday, February 22, 2008 |
Another periodic analysis has been published on HarrisForOhio.com, this time regarding the Projected Final Delegate Count for the DNC presidential convention. As the Presidential race comes to Ohio, a very simple mathematical analysis will show even modest wins for Clinton in many remaining states will not be enough (even with her projected superdelegate margin) to offset Obama’s leads (based on projecting delegates on remaining states and superdelegate populations).

Licensed to Kill? Fascist FBI Deputizes 23,000 Business Leaders
Monday, February 18, 2008 |
More than 23,000 business leaders are quietly working with the FBI and the Department of Homeland (in)Security. The rapidly growing group, called InfraGard, receives secret warnings of terrorist threats before the public does and in some cases before elected officials. In return they give information to the government. In the event of martial law they have permission to “shoot to kill.”

Free Speech? Not on Cecil’s Watch!
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 |
Cecil Thomas, CPD water-boy and token black to prove Westwood Concern is not racist, has apparently decided that free speech has no place in his committee, as evidenced by a story in today’s Enquirer. In addition to not thinking it relevant to denounce the promotion of an officer who killed an unarmed black war veteran, Thomas has decided that the public will not have the opportunity to speak at his committee meeting scheduled for this afternoon.

Debunking 9/11 Debunking - Disqualified by Bill Moyers Journal
Saturday, February 09, 2008 |
Guest article by Karl Pavlov
If you watched last week’s Bill Moyer’s Journal, you knew about his call for viewers to recommend one book that the presidential candidates should read before moving to the Oval office. A reader on 911blogger suggested that we write in and recommend Debunking 9/11 Debunking by David Ray Griffin. At the beginning of tonight’s Bill Moyer’s Journal segment on this subject, Bill Moyers said “We detected only one organized campaign behind a certain book and we disqualified it as a result.”

City Council should implement painted-line streetcar usability study
Sunday, February 03, 2008 |
Before City Council sinks $100 million dollars into a streetcar line, they should implement a virtually no-cost painted line usability study. This would be a cost-effective way to gauge initial ridership, and the results could bolster the arguments either for or against the plan—based on how many people utilize the line.

Fmr. US Backed Indonesian Dictator, Suharto, Dies at 86
Monday, January 28, 2008 |
Brutal Indonesian Dictator, Suharto, ruled for 30 years killing up to a million Indonesians. Hundreds of thousands more died during the 1975 (US backed) Indonesian invasion and 25 year occupation of East Timor. And tens of thousands also died in West Papua and Aceh. His wealth has been estimated at between $15 and $35 Billion. Human Rights Watch says Suharto has “gotten away with murder–another dictator who’s lived out his life in luxury and escaped justice,” but the US ambassador has a different take.

COAST to endorse Brinkman, not Heimlich
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 |
COAST, a group affiliated with Phil Heimlich in the past, has decided to endorse his opponent Tom Brinkman in the race for Ohio’s 2nd congressional district. This is a huge loss to for the Heimlich campaign, as another segment of his base has decided that Phil is not the best candidate for the job. Jason Gloyd, who was recently selected as the new chair of COAST, serves as Tom Brinkman’s campaign manager. As such, he abstained from the vote, which was an otherwise unanimous decision.
Update: During COAST’s discussion of this matter, Brinkman was asked to leave the room, and he did.

Kroger apparently not interested in saving more energy
Saturday, January 12, 2008 |
A few weeks ago, I sent a letter to Kroger suggesting they install doors on their open refrigeration units. This, I reasoned, would save energy, save money, and help the environment. As it turns out, Kroger is not interested in saving additional energy, implying that customers need the convenience of open units to easily grab items like string cheese.
