Criminal Injustice System? New Studies Show Racial Disparity in Drug Arrests Grows
Wednesday, May 07, 2008

Human Rights Watch reports black men are nearly twelve times as likely to be imprisoned for drug convictions as white men, even though whites commit more drug-related crimes. Black women are five times as likely to see prison time for drug crimes than white women. According to the Sentencing Project, since 1980 the rate of drug arrests for blacks has increased by 225 percent, compared to 75 percent for whites. (Last year studies found a race gap in traffic searches.)

Wonderment
Friday, May 02, 2008

I recently saw a commercial on the Discovery channel, and for whatever reason it just mesmerized me.  Then I found a copy on YouTube.  Then I found a copy of another video I remembered seeing for the first time when I was in high school—a video that forever had an impact on me.  I post them now that you, too, may share in the wonder of it all.

Exposed!  The Enquirer’s business relationship with the Freedom Center
Wednesday, April 30, 2008

While exploring the Freedom Center’s website for this recent article, I came across a link designed to connect potential volunteers with area agencies who can benefit from such work.  But I noticed the link took me to a different web address, even though the design of the Freedom Center’s site remained in tact.

Tax Free Jail:  Todd Portune’s Secret Weapon?
Saturday, April 26, 2008

Does Todd Portune have a secret weapon for the upcoming campaign season?  Something to fulfill his end of an alleged deal to deliver a new jail to the Hamilton County Republicans?  Does it involve 6600 Paddock Road?  Is there a strategy to increase jail capacity without a great big jail tax?

County’s Corrections System Update
Tuesday, April 22, 2008

At this morning’s Commissioners meeting the Board received an update on the state of the County’s jail situation from Administrator Patrick Thompson. The results reinforce exactly what opponents of the Issue 27 tax increase have said all along: there are significant changes that we can make to alleviate our jail overcrowding situation that do not require a massive tax increase.

FIJA:  Fully Informed Jury Association
Wednesday, April 16, 2008

A friend recently sent me a link to the Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA), and I found the premise of the organization refreshing in how it gives hope to regular citizens who are called to jury duty to, in essence, overthrow what they view as unjust laws.

The Star Wars Holiday Special
Saturday, April 12, 2008

This evening, I spoke with a long-time friend about a wide-variety of topics, and he told me about “The Star Wars Holiday Special.” Apparently, this is something George Lucas created for television after the first Star Wars movie—including the cast of the film—but it was so corny he paid off television networks never to air the thing again.  But of course, due to the magic of the internet, it is available online.  So I have thought to bring it to you!

Dr. King, Rev. Wright, Patriotism and COINTELPRO
Sunday, April 06, 2008

Race and anti-Americanism have been hot topics in the news because of Rev. Wright’s comments. We should remember Dr. King also made similar critical comments about the American empire. J. Edgar Hoover considered Dr. King a Communist and public enemy #1. In fact, King was under constant surveillance and was targeted by our governments COINTELPRO program.

Stan Chesley, Fen-Phen, and Character at the Enquirer
Thursday, April 03, 2008

Yesterday, the Lexington Herald-Leader named local attorney Stan Chesley in a story about lawyers cheating their clients for millions of dollars.  Here in Cincinnati, mum’s the word on the Fen-Phen lawsuit while the Enquirer instead prints Chesley’s name as an example of “character.”

Political Activism for Pre-Schoolers
Monday, March 24, 2008

The other day, when out exploring the neighborhood with my pre-school aged son (who was riding his bike), we discovered a kind of busy road with no sidewalks.  Naturally, this is the road down which he wanted to travel, and he was frustrated that the lack of a sidewalk prevented his endeavor.  “Daddy,” he said, “can you put sidewalks here?” I thought for a moment, and responded, “No, I’m not in charge of sidewalks.  But you can go to City Hall and ask them!”

4 Years Later:  Still Nothing to See Here!
Sunday, March 16, 2008

In honor of “Sunshine Week,” The Enquirer has decided to revisit the 2004 stolen election in Ohio—this time to “prove,” through open records, that nothing happened in Warren County to affect Bush’s 2004 “victory” in Ohio.  One must wonder, though, what took The Enquirer four years to investigate this story, and further why they haven’t spent time looking at all the other irregularities in Ohio through open-record laws.

“Negative Campaigning”?  Wulsin’s Double Standard
Friday, March 14, 2008

Let me make one thing clear:  I do not support Republican Jean Schmidt.  But I’ve never been a “lesser-of-two-evils” kind of thinker, which is why I continue to wonder at the candidacy of Democrat Victoria Wulsin.  Having just finished a primary contest where her opponent Steve Black blasted Wulsin for her involvement in the Heimlich Institute’s malariotherapy experiments, one might think Wulsin would be ready to run a clean campaign.  It seems, however, this is not the case, as Wulsin has failed to distance herself from inflammatory comments despite multiple requests.
