The growing gut and a decade of addictions
Sunday, July 20, 2008

When I was in high school, I weighed about 175 pounds.  At 6’1”, that made me a tall and somewhat thin guy.  And I ate like a horse.  As with so many teens, my metabolism was high, or something, and though I ate and ate I never put on the weight.  Somewhere around 23 years old, that metabolism apparently slowed down, and I made my first weight jump to 185 pounds.  I stayed there for a good long while, but now that I’ve embarked on cutting my caffeine dependence, I’m realizing how some of my more recent weight gains correspond with various addictions in my life.

What happened to “innocent until proven guilty”?
Tuesday, July 15, 2008

At David Pepper’s new blog PepTalk, he has posted a noteworthy item entitled, ”Reducing Jail Costs, Reducing Recidivism.” Apparently, Pepper learned at a conference one manner that local municipalities can save money and reduce recidivism—and in learning this, he has shared what appears a major injustice concerning the health benefits of those sitting in a jail cell.

The politics of fruit? Chiquita, McCain, Coups and Dictatorships
Thursday, July 10, 2008

Amy Goodman’s new column “Celebrate the release, not the regime” discusses Senator McCain’s ties to Colombia. In it she refers to the Huffington Post’s recent report about McCain’s ties to local billionaire and financier Carl Lindner. Coincidentaly, yesterday Goodman interviewed a writer that discusses the politics of fruit.

Fascist War Criminal Gets Heckled On Independence Day!
Saturday, July 05, 2008

According to the BBC, President Bush was interrupted yesterday by protesters several times while he spoke at the home of former president Thomas Jefferson. During a ceremony where people from 30 countries lined up to be sworn in as US citizens, several protesters called Bush a “fascist” and a “war criminal”. You can see the video from the BBC here.

3CDC makes worst financial deal ever?
Wednesday, July 02, 2008

After trying for weeks to find some information about who paid to build the Via Vite restaurant on Fountain Square, the City Manager’s office has attempted to satisfy our requests without supplying a single supporting document.  More on that in a minute.  Let’s presume 3CDC really did pay $2.5 million to build that restaurant.  Was it the worst business deal, ever?

“Right of Entry,” or Police State Undercover?
Thursday, June 26, 2008

“Those who would give up their freedom for security will have none and deserve neither.”
-Benjamin Franklin

Yesterday, I attended a meeting where Cincinnati Police officers encouraged attendants to sign and have notarized on the spot “Right of Entry Letters.” Once on file, these letters authorize police “to investigate the activity of anyone located within the property.” Is this a great way to enhance home security, or is this another step towards a police state—one where individual rights and freedoms get trampled by officers who may misinterpret the law?

Hey, Bortz!  We’re not idiots!
Sunday, June 22, 2008

Councilmember Chris Bortz, a registered Republican hiding behind the banner of independence via the Charter Party, thinks that voters are too simple-minded to comprehend something like proportional representation (PR)—which is ironic, since PR has been a banner issue for the Charter Party for years.  Bortz’s recent comments to The Enquirer are a slap in the face, not only to the Charter Party and it’s principles, but also to every voter with the mental capacity to comprehend something like “rankings.”

On Wednesday, June 18th, carpenters protested the Hertz Investment Group downtown, alleging that the company hired contractors and paid less than the area standard.  The group says they’ll stay until the issue with wages is remedied.

Prayer in Public?
Sunday, June 15, 2008

I understand why prayer is not allowed in public school.  I understand, too, why moments for silent prayer are also not allowed.  And I have no problem with that.  However, I did think it strange when I was at City Hall for the opening of the Council meeting.  (I guess, after all these years, I was never in the room the moment the meetings started before!) Mayor Mallory opened the meeting with silent prayer.

The Small World Department:  Heimlich, Gothard, Huckabee
Sunday, June 08, 2008

As The Cincinnati Beacon has extensively reported, failed politician turned obscure radio host Phil Heimlich has a close association to Bill Gothard, a fringe religious character just a few handshakes away from the George W. Bush White House.  Phil Heimlich is also son of Henry Heimlich, promoter of the largely discredited “Heimlich Maneuver,” more properly known as “Abdominal Thrusts.” The Beacon has also reported on the connections between failed presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee and his own connections to the underground Gothardite zombie movement.  Now it turns out Huckabee is using the Heimlich Maneuver.

Show me the money!  The cost to the City for 3CDC’s Square
Friday, June 06, 2008

Why is it so difficult to determine the actual amount of money the City of Cincinnati spent on 3CDC’s “revitalized” Fountain Square?  A few years ago, when the original plan got presented, the City boasted that it would only need to pay $4 million to get a totally renovated Square.  At the time, we wondered why no one counted the lost garage revenues for the next four decades in that cost.  But now we are getting a bigger picture about the actual costs to the City—and by extension to the taxpayers—than originally promised.

Kudos to Crowley, but will Corporate Dems vote for workers or for W&S?
Friday, May 30, 2008

Western & Southern is looking for more corporate welfare again. These welfare Kings have funded the campaigns of our “public servants” on council and expect a good return on their investments. But organized labor also invests in politicians and they represent actual people. Though there’s been a Dem majority in this city, they always back corporate profits over the people. Where will they stand now?

Dumpster Diving, with The Dean
Monday, May 26, 2008

I’ve been thinking about the concept of ”Freeganism” so much recently, that I just had to find out what one could find with no experience, and no preparation, peeking into some area dumpsters for the thrill.  So I called my cousin Nick, and we spent Monday evening dumpster diving, expecting to find nothing and pleased with the treasure from our first hunt.

John McCain’s Crazy Evangelicals
Thursday, May 22, 2008

Recently, Christopher Smitherman, president of the Cincinnati NAACP, released a statement about Sen. John McCain and Rev. John Hagee:  “I am very concerned that Senator McCain has not denounced, rejected, and refused the endorsement of Rev. Hagee.  Also, I am very concerned that Rev. Hagee’s behavior has not risen to the same level of scrutiny as other pastors.” Check out this video clip.

Cincinnati Black Blog—Unplugged by Google!
Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Blogger:  “This blog is under review due to possible Blogger Terms of Service violations...”

Today, the Cincinnati Black Blog is still offline.  I know Nate had posted addresses and social security numbers, but is it really a violation of Blogger’s Terms of Service to do that?  Should it be?  Regardless of one’s position on this issue, it seems the whole situation at the Cincinnati Black Blog has now raised questions about the limits of free speech.
