Cincinnati Progressives on the Bailout
Saturday, October 04, 2008

When we posted a press statement from COAST opposing the bailout, a progressive commenter blasted them for their position.  When asked how that same progressive would address Dan LaBotz, who also spoke against the bailout, I was called a “cheap whore.” Anyway, though it took me a bit longer than I would have liked, here is Dan LaBotz (from Cincinnati Progressive Action) and other progressives speaking at Fountain Square.  Enjoy!

The Deadly Intersections, Revealed!
Saturday, September 27, 2008

The Cincinnati Beacon has received data on Cincinnati’s top five intersections for collisions.  Presumably, these are the very dangerous intersections posing such a public safety threat, that we need to install red-light cameras to avoid imminent death.  We do not have any data on how many people die per year at these five intersections, if any die at all.  We also have no details about injuries, nor the amount of damage done.  These are just the five intersections with the most accidents.

Alaskan women AGAINST Palin
Saturday, September 20, 2008

I was contacted by an Alaskan blogger who had apparently researched blogs in swing states.  I must say I admire the dedication!  The person wanted to spread the word about the number of people in Alaska, especially women, who are opposed to Sarah Palin.  So here is a YouTube video featuring photos from a recent anti-Palin rally in Alaska.

NAACP Urges “Yes” for Issue 7 and Issue 8
Sunday, September 14, 2008

The ballot initiatives that the NAACP and its partners collected have now been assigned numbers by the Board of Elections.  Issue 7 is Red Light Cameras and Issue 8 is Proportional Representation.  The Cincinnati NAACP is urging you to vote YES on both of these issues.  A YES vote on Issue 7 will ban Red Light Cameras in the City of Cincinnati.  A YES vote on Issue 8 will change only how city council is elected.  I hope after Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters decision yesterday with “no charges” our community is ready for change.

Nader on 3CDC and Public Space
Wednesday, September 10, 2008

When I had the opportunity to ask Ralph Nader a question at a pubic forum, I wanted to get his take on 3CDC’s corporate takeover of Fountain Square—especially in the context of how public spaces are being occupied nationally.  I must say I was presently surprised by the round of applause my inquiry garnered from the audience.  And I found some of Nader’s examples noteworthy, particularly the idea of having an American treasure like the Statue of Liberty taken over by private corporate interests.

Cincinnati NAACP does not support Jeff Berding’s Plan
Wednesday, September 03, 2008

The Cincinnati NAACP does not support Council Member Jeff Berding’s plan to create 4 districts and 5 at large seats for the City of Cincinnati.  This plan will bring no greater representation to city council but will maintain the same power structure.  The Cincinnati NAACP does endorse its own ballot initiative and has put forth its own solution to redistribute power fairly within Cincinnati City Council elections.

To tax, or not to tax:  COAST chair Jason Gloyd responds to Greg Harris
Friday, August 29, 2008

Recently, we invited Democrat Greg Harris to provide a rebuttal to anti-tax positions articulated by Christopher Finney, co-founder of COAST.  Now, we have taken the debate another step forward by allowing current COAST chair Jason Gloyd to respond to Harris.  (Any suggestions on a candidate to rebut Gloyd?)

The 2008 Political Conventions and the Suppression of Dissent
Saturday, August 23, 2008

As the spectacle of the 2008 Olympic Games comes to a close, it is apparent that China was largely successful in their attempt to crackdown on any type of public protests that would interrupt or tarnish China’s image. 10 days into the Olympic Games, the Chinese Government had yet to permit any protests in three designated protest zones that were sanctioned for the Games. 77 applications were received since August 1 and zero have been granted. Not only has China been rejecting applications to protest, but the government has also been detaining people on a preventive basis.

Tire Trolley Neighborhood Circuits
Sunday, August 17, 2008

Next summer, I think Cincinnati should experiment with three-day weekend tire trolley neighborhood circuits.  These would be free or low-cost public transportation solutions designed to increase foot traffic in neighborhoods by linking key areas to one another in an attempt to foster pride and local economy.

Consumer rights, corporate neglect and government inaction
Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Consumers in the US aren’t allowed to see labels that tell them if their food is genetically modified, if their meat has been cloned or if the tires they are being sold are too old to be safe. If people in other countries don’t put up with this, why should we? A presidential candidate once said his biggest regret was; “the American people can have anything they want. They just don’t seem to want much of anything at all”. We must demand our rights!

Nader calls for crackdown on corporate crime, reversal of so-called war on drugs
Friday, August 08, 2008

*WASHINGTON*, Aug. 8--At a news conference today Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader outlined his plan to empty prisons of non-violent drug offenders and fill them up with corporate criminals. “Non-violent drug offenses are being over prosecuted and corporate crime is being under prosecuted,” Nader said. “The Justice Department must begin to reverse course, crank up the crackdown on corporate crime, and end the cruel and inhumane war on non-violent drug possession.”

Surprise! The Iraq War Really Was About Oil!
Friday, August 01, 2008

Guest article by Chris Johnson

Remember when Donald Rumsfeld told us in November of 2002 that the invasion of Iraq had “nothing to do with oil”? Well recently on June 24, 2008, there was a very interesting debate on the KCRW radio program “To The Point” hosted by Warren Olney. The discussion centered on Iraq and the decision to give no-bid contracts to some of the biggest western oil companies once expelled by Saddam Hussein in 1972. Among the guests on the program were Naomi Klein (author of “The Shock Doctrine” ) and Fadhil Chalabi (Former Iraqi Undersecretary).

How Chicago Shaped Obama: A Look at the Rise of a Politician
Tuesday, July 29, 2008

You’ve probably seen the controversial cover for The New Yorker magazine where their satirical aim seemed to miss its mark, but you’ve probably missed their Washington correspondent, Ryan Lizza’s interesting look at Obama’s rise to power in Chicago. It’s called “Making It: How Chicago Shaped Obama.” Here’s an interesting interview where he discusses it with Juan Gonzalez.
