The Achievement Test Challenge
Tuesday, May 06, 2008

I’d like to issue the “achievement test challenge” to area citizens, leaders, activists, and politicians.  The premise will be simple:  participants will take a variety of practice tests, like those given at both the 8th and 10th grade years.  Answer documents will be anonymous, and the overall scores of the group will be collected and compared to student performance in Ohio.  What better way to assess the utility of these high-stakes tests?

Cincinnati Police Warns Venue Renting to Marijuana Legalization Event!
Friday, May 02, 2008

Organizers make it a Marijuana Smoke-Free Event!

On Monday, RENU, called Riverfront West Sports Park, on the edge of Miamitown, to warn them that Saturday night, May 3rd, undercover cops and alcohol agents would be there for the HempRock Hempfest and if anyone is caught smoking marijuana, the State would revoke the ball field*s beer license.  Alcohol license rules state that the license can be fined or revoked if illegal drug activity is found on the premises.

Senator McCain Misleading on his Martin Luther King Public Policy Record
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Guest article by Cincinnati NAACP president Christopher Smitherman

Congressman John Conyers introduced legislation to create the Martin Luther King Holiday(MLK) four days after King’s assassination. King was killed in 1968. Fifteen years later and after six million petitioned signatures the House of representatives voted whether to approve the MLK National Holiday. This vote took place in 1983. John McCain voted against the MLK Holiday in 1983. The legislation still passed with a no vote from McCain.

Garbage Picking
Saturday, April 26, 2008

Each garbage night, pick-up trucks patrol my neighborhood, and the drivers fill up with items being discarded by my neighbors.  I have always had a bit of an interest in the garbage picker, but I have never really had the urge to pick up someone’s garbage myself.  All that changed this week, as I took someone’s garbage home for the first time.

“Black people drink Pepsi, white people drink Diet Coke”
Monday, April 21, 2008

This past weekend, my wife prepared for a celebration at our home, which we expected might be multi-racial.  I was not thinking along those lines, however, as my wife and I went through the grocery store, picking up supplies.  As we got to the aisle with soda and chips, she asked me to grab a 2-liter of Pepsi, and a 2-liter of Diet Coke.  I was surprised by her cross-branding selection, and asked why she picked diet in one brand, and regular in another.

Personal Reflection:  Last Man Standing
Thursday, April 17, 2008

While going through some boxes of old photographs, I recently came across the following snapshot.  It struck me, because I am the only remaining person alive in the picture.  Even the person who took the photo has passed.  And so it can happen that, sometimes, while stumbling through old photographs, the brevity of life confronts us.

“God Hates Fags” in Cincinnati?
Friday, April 11, 2008

According to the schedule of events posted at the disgusting God Hates Fags website, the group will be bringing their outrageous protests to Cincinnati for Matt Maupin’s funeral on April 27th at the Great American Ball Park.  In an interesting counter-development, this MySpace page showcases what appears to be a group who wants to surround the “God Hates Fags” group with American flags so no one can see them.

Those against streetcars, rumbling in the distance
Saturday, April 05, 2008

There are some rumblings around town—a great many people, in fact, from all across the political spectrum, who are not sure if increased government spending should be dedicated to a very short streetcar loop so people in river-front condos can socialize without having a car.  Is this really the most pressing issue facing the City?  Is this really what it means to serve the citizens of Cincinnati?  Do residents of College Hill care if The Banks hooks up with OTR?

McCain is a CONSERVATIVE!
Thursday, April 03, 2008

As voters’ interest with the Obama-Clinton race begins to fatigue, people are starting to pay attention to John McCain’s voting record.  McCain is a solid conservative.  This is an indubitable FACT.

House Republicrats hold secret session to discuss illegal government spying
Sunday, March 16, 2008

Only 5 other times in 182 years have there been such undemocratic secret sessions. Not only was CSPAN blacked out, but members of Congress had to pledge an oath of “confidentiality” and the House was swept for any listening devices by Capitol Police. The last secret session was in 1983 when they discussed their support for Nicaraguan contra-terrorists.  As we enter sunshine week, we should demand transparency in government at every level.

Few scientists warm to oily skeptic’s conference on climate change
Wednesday, March 12, 2008

The oil and tobacco backed Heartland Institute of Chicago questions the scientific consensus on climate change and secondhand smoke. Their 2008 Conference on Climate Change had hundreds of people in attendance, only 19 of which were scientist. These corporate propagandists have taken money from Exxon, Philip Morris and a cosponsor received funds from Texaco.
