Opportunity Knocks:  ABC opens window for Wulsin
Thursday, July 03, 2008

The ABC news blog has picked up the story on Vic Wulsin and malariotherapy, and the headlines don’t swing Wulsin’s way:  “Democratic Congressional Candidate’s Ties to Bizarre AIDS Research: Dr. Victoria Wulsin Is Under Attack for Her Ties to a Debunked Research Project Seeking to Cure AIDS with Malaria.” For better or for worse (in sickness and in health?), Wulsin’s campaign for Congress is tied at the hip to malariotherapy.  But this doesn’t need to be a bad thing.  Opportunity knocks, and Wulsin’s campaign now finds itself at a crossroads.  What will Wulsin do?

More from the Inbox:  Obama and the Birth Certificate “Smears”
Tuesday, July 01, 2008

I have read the material on Barack Obama’s Fight the Smears campaign page.  And I had pondered the circus that is American politics, wondering at the emails that would cause Obama’s campaign to make such a page in the first place.  Then, I got what appeared to be one of the “smear” emails.  It was sent to me and a long list of others.  So, I decided to respond to the whole list, engaging the sender in a dialogue—to see what might happen.  Here are the results so far…

3CDC makes worst financial deal ever?
Wednesday, July 02, 2008

After trying for weeks to find some information about who paid to build the Via Vite restaurant on Fountain Square, the City Manager’s office has attempted to satisfy our requests without supplying a single supporting document.  More on that in a minute.  Let’s presume 3CDC really did pay $2.5 million to build that restaurant.  Was it the worst business deal, ever?

Proportional Representation Petitions from Cincinnati NAACP Hit the Ground Today
Thursday, July 03, 2008

At the June meeting, the General Membership voted to support Proportional Representation and take action by engaging in a petition drive to place the issue on the November 4, 2008 ballot. The Cincinnati NAACP hired an attorney to create the petition based on the membership’s decision last Thursday. Today, one week later, the petition form is complete. The first printing should be available by 5:00p.m. this afternoon.

Loyalty:  Not one of Heimlich’s Hard Truths?
Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Though Phil Heimlich’s Christian talk radio show is not played in Cincinnati, that doesn’t stop him from trotting out his few Cincinnati friends as radio guests.  As pointed out by Kevin Osborne, Phil had longtime friend Chris Finney on to gloat over the pro-jail tax crowd—which is interesting, since Phil was a one-time icon for those very same players, like Si Leis, and Carl Lindner.  Why would Phil engage a public betrayal of those who have supported him?  On June 28th, Phil did it again—this time in a conversation with Peter Bronson.

Corporate Democrats get more corporate dough than Republicans
Monday, April 07, 2008

They say, “He who pays the piper calls the tune”. The Wall Street Journal reports that Big business is bypassing McCain. The Center for Responsive Politics reports that of the 7 major industries that reliably support Republicans, all have given more to Clinton and Obama, except for 1. And even that 1 is a close call. The defense industry and the health industry have given much more to the Democrats.

PR v. 9x:  Can Charter have it both ways?
Thursday, July 03, 2008

Christopher Smitherman, President of the Cincinnati NAACP and former member of the Charter Committee, recently announced an NAACP sponsored petition drive to put Proportional Representation (PR) on the ballot for how City Council gets elected.  It seems like the Charter Party, who for years has advocated for PR, would be natural allies.  But what is the Charter Party’s official position on the question of PR?

Black Box Voting on Chain of Custody
Sunday, March 16, 2008

Editor’s Note: The material below is from Black Box voting.  The issue reminded us of an old video we captured with Stephan Skirtz.  He made waves in the 2004 blogosphere when he captured a photograph of a red pickup truck with a George W. Bush bumper sticker, and a guy handling uncounted ballots in a dark parking lot with no one around.
