City Budget:  more than $1 million and climbing every decade to be wasted
Thursday, December 04, 2008

The more I examine particular line items in the budget, the more I realize the wastefulness of the strong mayor primary.  The Hamilton County Board of Elections estimates that this year’s primary, on an obscure date where nothing else is on the ballot, will cost $550,000.  In this decade, we will have had three of these expenses, and in the next decade we’ll have two.  So we’re talking well over $1 million dollars in just a few election cycles of spending that could be utilized for something actually useful.

City says “bye-bye” to half a million, amidst budgetary crisis
Tuesday, December 02, 2008

As everyone knows, facing a national economic crisis, a County economic crisis, and a City economic crisis—further exasperated by the tenuous City retirement system—the City of Cincinnati needs to start tightening the belt to stay solvent.  So how does half a million dollars sound?  Is that a significant amount of money?  In Mayor Mallory’s recommendations to the 2009-2010 budget, he has several line items that are near this dollar amount.  Why, then, should the City throw that much money away into a pointless system that benefits no one in particular?

Bill Ayers interview Part II
Friday, November 28, 2008

A few years ago I saw a documentary on the Weather Underground. I was surprised that this radical part of the anti-war movement wasn’t talked about much-that is until the last election where up until a few weeks ago Ayers was central to Republican attacks on Obama. I guess that’s why I find this interview interesting.

Hamilton County Citizens Voice Opposition to Proposed Budget at Second Public Hearing
Thursday, December 04, 2008

Concerned Hamilton County citizens packed into the Drake Center on Wednesday night for the County Commissioner’s second public hearing to discuss the proposed 2009 Budget for Hamilton County. The seating options were quickly exhausted as the start of the hearing approached and by the time the President of the Board, Todd Portune, called the hearing to order at 6:39PM people were standing three-deep against the back wall and others were still struggling to get in.

Corporate Democrats get more corporate dough than Republicans
Monday, April 07, 2008

They say, “He who pays the piper calls the tune”. The Wall Street Journal reports that Big business is bypassing McCain. The Center for Responsive Politics reports that of the 7 major industries that reliably support Republicans, all have given more to Clinton and Obama, except for 1. And even that 1 is a close call. The defense industry and the health industry have given much more to the Democrats.

Black Box Voting on Chain of Custody
Sunday, March 16, 2008

Editor’s Note: The material below is from Black Box voting.  The issue reminded us of an old video we captured with Stephan Skirtz.  He made waves in the 2004 blogosphere when he captured a photograph of a red pickup truck with a George W. Bush bumper sticker, and a guy handling uncounted ballots in a dark parking lot with no one around.
