What’s the deal with Steve Black?

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

From what I’ve been told, Steve Black—who is running against Vic Wulsin for the Democratic nomination for Congress in the Second District—has never voted as a Democrat.  Allegedly, in the last election he took a Republican ballot, which would have allowed him to vote for Jean Schmidt.

Word also has it that Black hired away Wulsin’s campaign manager from the last campaign.  And, while we’re spiraling deeper into rumors here, why not also mention that she reportedly no longer works for him.  Does that mean Republican Steve Black, running as a Democrat, has access to all of Wulsin’s records?

So I just sent Steve Black the following:

Dear Mr. Black:

I have been interested in the 2nd congressional district since Vic Wulsin entered the race last year—as I have been following the Dr. Heimlich malariotherapy stories for some time.  However, I must say I’m confused at your position in this race.  From what I understand, you are a registered Republican who likely voted for Schmidt in the last election.

I have also heard that you temporarily hired Wulsin’s manager from last year, which would have perhaps given you access to Wulsin’s records.  This casts doubts onto your motives as a candidate.

Can you shed some light, please?

Thanks,

The Dean

  1. Nate Livingston says:

    There might be another explanation.

Black people were publicly and privately urged to support Black Cincinnatian Ken Blackwell. The only way to vote for Blackwell in the primary was by taking the Republican ballot. Steve Black may have taken the Republican ballot because he wanted to support Ken Blackwell in the primary and that was the only way to do it. Like you, I don’t know. But I see no reason to believe that Black voted for Jean Schmidt in the general election, and no proof that he voted for her in the primary. Didn’t Bob McEwen challenge her?

  2. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

Steve Black, who is white, has apparently admitted that he is a former Republican who just turned Democrat.  One must wonder how honest and straightforward has been his conversion.  Certainly people can change parties, but that, combined with his potential acquisition of Wulsin’s old data, makes for a strange circumstance.

  3. Nate Livingston says:

I met Steve Black once and I’m pretty sure he is not white. Do I need to send you a picture of him or interviews where he has said that he is Black?

  4. Nate Livingston says:

Wouldn’t it be something if I’m right and Steve Black is Black, and he supported Ken Blackwell, who is also Black, but white Democrats and even some Blacks in Congress, like John Conyers, have spent years working to convince Blacks to hate Blackwell because… well… they claim he conspired to disenfranchise Black people.

OK.  Maybe he is Black.  The YouTube picture on his website is some bald white guy.  Maybe that’s not him though.  I’ll watch the clip right now.

  6. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

The clip is rather uninteresting to me. The first time I started to watch it, I thought I was looking at a bald white guy.

Now that you mention it, I can’t tell if I’m looking at a tanned skinned bald white guy or a light skinned bald black guy.

So maybe you have a point, Nate, about the Ken Blackwell thing.

Still, the Wulsin stuff is interesting.

I just found the source of the YouTube video.  On his site it is really tiny.

    The full size is here:

I still can’t tell what color person I’m looking at.  If nothing else, maybe the dude is a great exercise in how silly our “black-and-white” definitions of race are…

    should offer background and photo.

Have learned not to label a book by its cover. An e-mail asking his heritage will be done; not to say that skin tone, depth of colour, or heritage identifies content of intent, interest, or heart. Thanks for #7, Dean!

  9. Passing? says:

Umm, either that’s a white guy in the picture and video, or he’s the highest of high-yellows I’ve ever seen.

  10. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

    He is white.
