Under the Radar:  HamCo Preps for Society-Ending Catastrophic Disaster!

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

A few months ago, Hamilton County Public Health sent shocking informational flyers to some, but not all, Hamilton County residents.  These flyers asked for volunteers should our region suffer some kind of catastrophic event—and it promised that volunteers (and their families) would be the first to receive, for example, inoculations against disease should we become the target of bioterrorism.  It kind of sounds like Hamilton County is already assembling the list of who gets to live, and who gets to fend for themselves in the crazed throngs, should we face a society-ending or -changing event sometime soon.

See the flyers for yourself.  Click on the image for a larger view:

This quote shows how seriously Hamilton County takes the threat:  “Communities may choose to keep these locations confidential until an actual event for security purposes.”

I am pleased, on the one hand, to know that my government has plans should something terrible happen.  I am concerned that not everyone was invited to be a volunteer.  And, naturally, I must wonder why this is being sent now.

    shocking informational flyers

What, exactly did you find, “shocking”, in the flyer?

I am concerned that not everyone was invited to be a volunteer.

I have to wonder, is your concern based on your not being invited to participate? In an emergency situation the last person they need, is someone who will question and cast suspicion of conspiracy, on directives given. I would have much more confidence in an emergency program, if they choose their prospective volunteer list, from those with a history of productive community volunteerism.

And, naturally, I must wonder why this is being sent now.

Before a threat emerges is generally the best time to prepare. Waiting until afterward, really doesn’t help anyone except conspiracy theorists.

  2. says:

I would have the workers vaccinated last- to insure they stick around to help vaccinate the others. This is assuming I was scared enough to prepare for bio-terrorism in Hamilton County.

  3. Just for Fun... says:

Why not see if you can get someone at The Health Alliance to go on record with this bit of info...If there is a major disaster...and we have to set up triage in the parking lots down at Riverfront- there are only enough beds and tents for 12K people- That includes staffing for that many people. So that means- bend over and kiss ya ass goodbye. They may have upped to to 20K by now- but it use to be 12K.

But they won’t go on record- don’t want mass hysteria around here with people knowing the truth- you saw what happened when IKE hit here. NO ice, no real plans to get people back on the grid, stores were a mess- just think about a dirty bomb or small pox. Gas stations were out of gas- or chose to close and then upped the price later.

Just the Facts- Just the facts. How do I know-use to sit in on meetings and hear these things and use to think- if people only knew- how many people were going to die- they would freak out!

  4. says:

JFD, you presume lots of things about my friend who got the flyer in his mail.  But if you only knew… perhaps your view on who they decided to “invite” would be different…

No, perhaps something else is going on here…

  5. Jones says:

No resident on our street received one of these flyers. In fact, I spoke to many people, of many colors, many beliefs & many cultures about the flyers. They didn’t receive them, either.

I am concerned that not everyone was invited to be a volunteer.

Jason, I didn’t believe that you were one to step to the front of the line to volunteer for a true public service community project. I have to go with JFD.  Perhaps it would be better if you just mingled with the crazed throngs of people rioting for what they believe to be their fair share & then some.

The rest of us will figure out a way to get through the crisis. Besides, if it’s that catastrophic, no one’s going to give a damned because everyone will die anyway. Germ warfare & biological warfare doesn’t choose between wealthy & poor, nor does it choose a particular skin color, nor a certain ancestral custom. When it hits, people go en mass.

No, perhaps something else is going on here…

I hardly think so.  And you haven’t provided any material to support such thinking. Go find an old Civil Defense manual & figure it out for yourself.  One hint:  before & after the windstorm, it was on the TV how people could prepare themselves for emergency situations. I guess you weren’t paying attention.

  6. Nothing stopping you says:

Dean there is no excuse for not volunteering if you’re so inclined...any number of groups - the Red Cross, for example - would welcome it. The one hitch: you’ve got to be willing to step up when the time comes; if you need an invitation, JFD is indeed right, you’ll need to wait your turn like everyone else. If you haven’t made preparations for your family maybe you’ll get help and maybe you won’t...triage will be the name of the game. No conspiracy here - just fact...many of us who presently volunteer in the Fire, EMS and Red Cross service have had vaccinations and various materials issued precisely because we’ll be the ones attempting to rescue and bring aid to those who haven’t provided for themselves. Just like after Katrina and Ike, we’ll put ourselves at risk helping those unfortunates who cannot help themselves for any number of reasons, along with those many individuals too ignorant or bull-headed to heed the warnings and get out. See video of any recent hurricane coverage for examples of the latter.

In worst-case scenarios like a bio outbreak, radiological incident or, say, Mt.Rainier burying Seattle or the California coast dropping into the Pacific (both virtually assured but who knows when), NO ONE will be the “they” that you seem to expect will save your ass, so forget about that.

We take this stuff seriously, while praying it never occurs. When and if the bad stuff happens (better yet, before it does), jump in and lend a hand or shut up and stay the hell out of the way.

We have been sic for 5 weeks and come to think of it, we didn’t receive an invitation.

Perhaps, during the pandemic, Wulsin would finally gain the beacon respect ?

Don’t stand in line for the vaccination, Dean !

  8. says:

    Anon #6:

I’m not sure why you sound so angry.  For all you know, I would make a great volunteer.  For all you know, I’m talking with my family about whether such volunteerism would be right for my family.

But, I wouldn’t even know about this if my friend hadn’t shared the flyer.  If they really want people to be thinking about how to prepare in these sorts of events, why didn’t everyone get one of these?

  9. says:

I would have the workers vaccinated last- to insure they stick around to help vaccinate the others. This is assuming I was scared enough to prepare for bio-terrorism in Hamilton County.

    Ha!

  10. JFD says:

JFD, you presume lots of things about my friend who got the flyer in his mail. But if you only knew… perhaps your view on who they decided to “invite” would be different…

Apparently, you don’t think your friend has what it takes to be useful in an emergency; however, I made no comment about how they actually picked the prospective volunteers; I simply noted your unsuitability for the task, and stated how I would like volunteers to be picked.

  11. Nothing stopping you says:

    Jason,
Not so much angry as frustrated with the attitude (not necessarily yours, granted) that “someone else will take care of this”. Often there is someone or some organization that will at least try to do this, but in a really major catastrophe, it’s not going to happen, or at best, not as soon as many would like.

I hope you do volunteer for some meaningful service deserving of your time - it WILL give you a different perspective on the expectations of many people, but mostly it’s beneficial to everyone involved, including yourself.

  12. Dewey says:

If a person were to get the truth from the University of Cincinnati, he would find the contingency plan for University Hospital is to protect the hospital and employees from the public. That means keeping the masses of “those people” away from the buildings and grounds. UC assumes that UHI will be under assault during a crisis. Hows that for mixing public and private money? Hmmm?

  13. Yo Dewey says:

    Dewey Knows what I know!!

“Have your badge where you can get to it.You will need it to get thru the police baradades. All of the area around the Univeristy of Cincinnati will be closed to all non-hospital employees.”

Have a clothing bag packed for at least 5 days of medicine and clothing- if you are management- have that same thing for your children so they can be taken to a “safe” location off the hospital grounds...(I know where it is- and it is underground!) I also know where the temp morgue is set up too- away from people too- and how many body bags they have on hand! And it isn’t pretty!!

People it is a bend over and kiss your ass goodbye moment if a major event happens here- That little flyer- was only a hint! So get your immunizations- I don’t think that will happen if it is a dirty bomb!  That is what we were told!

  14. says:

Of course first responders will get vaccines first, they are the ones that will be in direct contact with masses of infected persons.  There is nothing sinister there.  If you want to get involves both TMRC and CERT are actively recruiting volunteers.  All it requires is a bit of your time.
