Open letter to Jungle Jim’s regarding open refrigeration units

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Dear Jungle Jim’s,

As you know, Jungle Jim’s has a reputation for going out on a limb.  That’s why I’d like to share a concept that could put you in the spotlight as an area leader among grocers concerned with ecologically friendly solutions.

Please check out this study:

http://www.ecn.nl/docs/library/report/2007/e07098.pdf

In short, green-consciousness has reached a new level in mainstream culture.  As you probably know, lots of energy and carbon emissions are spent and produced due to open refrigeration units.

While some may suggest that retrofitting open refrigeration units with doors will prevent people from buying string cheese, or yogurt, a greater possibility is that the move can save energy costs, increase profits, and earn your store positive media through implementing the concept.

I write this letter, therefore, in hopes that Jungle Jim’s will consider retrofitting doors on open refrigeration units for the benefit of future generations.

Respectfully,

[The Dean of Cincinnati]

    Oh and…

    Dear Jungle Jim’s--

You are the leader in the concept of food as entertainment. And so successful that hoardes of people travel far distances to purchase many goods they could get a mile from their home, strictly for the experience. You’ll be pleased to know that I am acquainted with a couple that, though their culinary tastes are far from exotic, and they, in fact, eat out more often than not, still drive 90 miles round trip for their weekly date night at JJ’s. They do occasionally conserve fuel by making it a double date night with another couple.

Conspicuous consumption is the hook that makes Jungle Jim’s a vacation destination. But, please consider becoming a cutting edge leader and responsible environmental business by enclosing your refrigerated products.

    Sincerely

    Cincysuz

    Uh…

Do you prefer that your friends use gas, and create pollution, on top of the extra pollution created by open refrigeration units?

    Hi,
Thanks for the reminder.  smile Refrigeration is on my list of areas to address.  You may have noticed a lot of changes on the floor, but we are working on the equipment behind the scenes as well.

As you may have noticed, we are working towards that direction.  Currently, we are replacing every light fixture in the building, adding skylights (the weather has not cooperated), upgrading equipment and eliminating equipment.  Our refrigeration compressors preheat all the water going into the water tanks.  In the winter the heat from the compressor is routed back into the store.  The dairy and frozen food departments have reclaim ducts to pull the cold air from the floor and “dump” it over the produce department.  All of our cardboard is recycled.  Pallets are recycled.  We are investigating ceiling fans.
We are using LEED guidelines as we move forward.  I do have some meetings this week (sorry, can’t disclose them right now), but if we can work it out, it would be another major step in the right direction.

    Have Fun!

Another “throw it against the wall and see if it will stick” piece here.

But then again, we’re talking about Amsterdam, where everything sticks to the wall....

That’s great. I’m willing and happy to eat crow, and in this case I’m sure I can find it at Jungle Jim’s. Believe me, I want to be proven wrong.

I apologize to Jungle Jim’s and appreciate the steps they’ve taken and have planned in the future so that they are an environmentally responsible business and neighbor. The time has come for LEED certified buildings. Though municipal and education facilities often have regulations in place, and require LEED accredited designers and engineers on their teams, private industry and especially retail is far behind. I’m glad that JJ’s has demonstrated that you can indeed be a large, successful, unique business while also being environmentally responsible. I’ll continue to make my semi-annual trip there to get my spices and if I can combine it with other trips to that area, I may increase my patronage as JJ’s fits in the non-"big box” shopping category high on my list. And since I’m in a commendin’ kinda mood, I’ll also commend the Dean for getting this update on JJ’s environmentally conscious activities.

Thank you, Phill, for stopping by—and please keep us informed about any such developments happening at Jungle Jim’s.  I’d be interested to have more details about all your green conscious decisions, and how they compare to the grocery industry as a whole.
