NAACP Urges “Yes” for Issue 7 and Issue 8

The ballot initiatives that the NAACP and its partners collected have now been assigned numbers by the Board of Elections. Issue 7 is Red Light Cameras and Issue 8 is Proportional Representation. The Cincinnati NAACP is urging you to vote YES on both of these issues. A YES vote on Issue 7 will ban Red Light Cameras in the City of Cincinnati. A YES vote on Issue 8 will change only how city council is elected. I hope after Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters decision yesterday with “no charges” our community is ready for change.

Third, State Representative Tyrone K. Yates has endorsed Proportional Representation. State Representative Yates is urging a YES vote on issue 8. State Representative Yates says, “I believe proportional representation is the best and fairest method of electing Cincinnati City Council Members within the Council Manager form of government with Cincinnati’s Mayor selected by the Council. This was the method in place supported by Mayor Theodore M. Berry when Cincinnati’s form of government was the envy of the nation.” The Cincinnati NAACP is excited to have the endorsement of State Representative Yates.

Voting begins in Hamilton County on September 30, 2008. Ohio is in the balance! This is the only time that I am aware that citizens can register to vote and vote on the same day. This period will last from September 30, 2008 -October 6, 2008. We encourage our members to vote early at the Board of Elections.

It’s clear the voting system currently in place in Hamilton county does not work. Having educated myself about proportional representation through research, talking with officials from other states that use the system, it is clear to me that voting YES for proportional representation will bring about much needed change in Cincinnati. I’m very frustrated by “ do nothing” politicians who do not share important values and community concerns. For instance not one City council member spoke out against Joe Deters and his ill-considered and UNLAWFUL decision not to charge Jodi Edwards. No politician has spoken out about back-door-deals between parties, or judges and the Hamilton County Prosecutor who don’t have to fight to keep their “burning” seats. I want elected officials whether it be a man or a woman, with a big set of you know what. I want a politician who has the courage to stand up for what’s RIGHT and speak out against what’s WRONG.

I wonder......, does your research involve, hanging on Smithermans every word? I would also like to know if you can tell us which officials, from which states, you spoke to? I’d hate to change my negitive opinion of PR, based on what could be complete bullshit, if that is what you comments turn out to be.

CAJD says it is clear that the voting system here doesn’t work. Then the NAACP is proud to have the endorsement of Tyrone Yates.

I have written Mr Yates a number of times since he has been in office. The only response I have ever received is the same email that is automatically generated. In this case, I guess one could say the voting system didn’t work, but then I don’t know what system would work if the elected gets in office and ignores his constituents.

Perhaps CAJD could be more specific and tell us why the the system doesn’t work.

And perhaps CAJD could tell us why he is so happy to have the endorsement of Mr. Yates. Is Yates the type of representative that he is trying to elect?

Yes it’s true Smitherman is my Hero since he’s not afraid to stand up to the status quo.
I spoke with Terry Woodsnorth from Cambridge and Anthony Lorenzo from OTR. Also, I talked to the people from FairVote, read the PR petition, and now this was really hard research...I Googled PR.

You said you talked to officials from other states; Anthony Lorenzo is from OTR, and Terry (Terrance) Woodsnorth produced nothing when Googled. What type of “official” is Mr Woodsnorth, in Cambridge? Does Mr Woodsnorth have multiple personalities? Would that be sufficiant to make his opinion count, as if it came from more than one “offical”?

It appears, your embellished comments are as I suspected, complete bullshit. I still plan on voting against a voting system designed to give representation to a small group of “block” voters, who may, or may not, have the best interests of all citizens at heart.

Urbanist--pimping for Smitherman????? Are you serious? You asked what does Red light or PR have to do with Joe Deters--Joe Deters represents everything that is wrong with America. He’s the reason people like you don’t like people like me.
Also, who said I was white? I might be Hispanic or Asian or Black. What does color have to do with anything?

If PR helps folks that share my values get elected then folks like me would come out swinging when the Dems and Repubs make back door deals.

Furthermore I don’t have a problem pimping for a strong MAN. He’s not afraid he does not hide behind a hood or in his hood. He’s a man of the people.

Are you saying that in the year 2008 that My. Yates is justified in not accepting email?
Has Mr. Yates ever stated that he doesn’t accept email?
Does Mr. Yates employ a system that accepts messages on the internet?

Considering the last three sentences, I think Mr. Yates lack of response is unacceptable and indicative of the arrogance of elected representatives.

As it becomes clear to the community this is far from just being a Christopher Smitherman issue, that there are many who feel the city elections need a serious overhaul, we intend to mount a serious campaign to make our case in Cincinnati.
