Marijuana Policy Project:  Interested in Cincinnati?

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

This week, The Cincinnati Beacon got in contact with the Marijuana Policy Project (from Washington D.C.).  The MPP is interested in Cincinnati’s marijuana laws, even more so now that Todd Portune has issued City Hall a public letter urging them to repeal the legislation.

"We’re very interested in Cincinnati,” said Zane Hurst, a legislative analyst for MPP.  “[We] want to help in any way possible to repeal the law that recriminalized marijuana.”

The MPP web site offers this page with a list of suggestions about how concerned citizens can take action.

On a more local level, The Beacon reminds its readers that representatives from City Hall can be contacted at any time.  (Email addresses are copied below for your convenience.)

Perhaps most compelling at the MPP site is this list of victims.  The case of Jonathan Magbie seems most horrific:

On September 24, 2004, 27-year-old Jonathan Magbie died while serving a 10-day sentence for marijuana possession in a Washington, D.C., jail. Magbie, a quadriplegic since a drunk driving accident at the age of 4, was a first-time offender.

(...)

A miscommunication between jail, hospital, and court officials gave Retchin the impression that the D.C. jail could handle Magbie’s medical needs — primarily, a near-constant need for ventilation to help him breathe. In fact, the jail could not accommodate him, but by the time Magbie reached a hospital, he was dead.

In any event, with the jail issue reaching a critical mass in Hamilton County, the use of who fills jail beds is significant.  How many should be filled with area pot smokers?

It needs more study! Keep in mind this law isn’t as strict as the laws in Singapore.

  2. Leslie Ghizim says:

We already said we’re not going after college kids and I haven’t received any calls from any quadriplegics complaining about getting busted.
