As I continue to watch the odd twists and turns of the election season, I cannot help but be somewhat taken aback at the level of anger that is being shown by the supporters of John McCain and Sarah Palin. There have been outbursts during some of the speeches made by McCain and Palin calling Barack Obama a “terrorist” and the Secret Service is investigating whether a supporter shouted out “Kill Him” during a speech given by Sarah Palin in Florida. This level of anger from supporters has been invigorated ever since the McCain campaign has decided that the “gloves are coming off” in the remaining days before the election.
This has resulted in increased attacks against Barack Obama for his association with William Ayers, a fear that Obama “isn’t one of us”, and has led Sarah Palin to famously quip that Obama is “palling around with terrorists.” As John McCain desperately tries to attempt to put the genie back in the bottle, let’s take a look at some videos and comments that have relevance to this discussion.
There has been some very interesting footage that has been circulating recently of McCain supporters waiting to get into speaking events. Take this video from outside an event in Strongsville, Ohio:
This type of sentiment has also found its way inside McCain rallies. During this clip, you can hear a McCain supporter yell “terrorist” in response to McCain’s question: “Who is the real Barack Obama?”:
This type of behavior has drawn criticism from some who claim that the McCain/Palin ticket has been fueling this type of behavior. This criticism has led to John McCain defending Barack Obama during recent town hall meetings and even getting booed by his own supporters:
All of this and Cindy McCain still believes that Obama is running the “dirtiest campaign in American history.”
On October 10, Frank Schaeffer wrote an open letter to John McCain that appeared in the Baltimore Sun. Schaeffer supported John McCain his Presidential bid in 2000 and is the son of the evangelist Francis Schaeffer. Frank has worked in the past with Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and has chronicled his life growing up with religion in numerous books. Schaeffer has come out in support of Obama and feels that the McCain campaign has released a dangerous hatred from within his supporters. Part of his open letter is below:
John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as “not one of us,” I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.
At a Sarah Palin rally, someone called out, “Kill him!” At one of your rallies, someone called out, “Terrorist!” Neither was answered or denounced by you or your running mate, as the crowd laughed and cheered. At your campaign event Wednesday in Bethlehem, Pa., the crowd was seething with hatred for the Democratic nominee - an attitude encouraged in speeches there by you, your running mate, your wife and the local Republican chairman.
Shame!…
...John McCain, you are no fool, and you understand the depths of hatred that surround the issue of race in this country. You also know that, post- 9/11, to call someone a friend of a terrorist is a very serious matter. You also know we are a bitterly divided country on many other issues. You know that, sadly, in America, violence is always just a moment away. You know that there are plenty of crazy people out there.
Stop! Think! Your rallies are beginning to look, sound, feel and smell like lynch mobs.
John McCain, you’re walking a perilous line. If you do not stand up for all that is good in America and declare that Senator Obama is a patriot, fit for office, and denounce your hate-filled supporters when they scream out “Terrorist” or “Kill him,” history will hold you responsible for all that follows.
Frank Schaeffer also mentioned during an interview today, that this type of language being used by McCain and Palin is stirring up anger within certain subcultures within this country that resonate with Sarah Palin and her background.
Journalist Max Blumenthal is back from a trip to Alaska where he visited Sarah Palin’s church of 20 years and interviewed people that Palin has been involved with during her political career including the former Chair of the Alaskan Independence Party Mark Chryson. (Video here) Blumenthal documented his trip in some videos, one of which is below:

"Somewhat taken aback” “criticism from some” (but not you) and “interesting footage.” Not outraged? Not calling for swift condemnation? Not demanding that the Republican party make a strong statement against McCain/Palin’s racist, dangerous campaign? What about the monkey dolls? Does that make you “slightly uncomfortable?”
Typical of The Beacon. Another piece dabbing at the Republican party with a powder puff so you can pretend you’re balanced. Why bother?
14 Oct 2008 at 07:43 am | #
Mr. Johnson,
You are showing your true colors.
The Republicans do not have a monopoly on negative hate filled campaigning.
There have been reports of democratic prosecutors threatening jail time to McCain supporters that speak nagatively about Obama.
As for me ...
Ethically I am obligated to vote third party but ...
I am hoping for an Obama presidency, it will speed up the awakening.
You almost get it, keep seeking knowledge, eventually you will see the truth.

How is this any different than the past 8 years when Bush was compared to Hitler, and Republicans were denounced as Fascist Nazis? Let’s face it, political invective has become increasingly harsh on both sides of the aisle. Don’t try to make it into a one party phenomenon.

Mr. Scott Ryan,
What “true colors” am I showing? When did I ever claim in my piece that the “Republicans have a monopoly on negative hate filled campaigning”? This piece focuses in on this recent tactic by the McCain/Palin campaign of whipping up angry sentiment in their supporters and its effect that you can see partially in the videos.
General George C. Scott,
This piece is about the angry tactics of a campaign and the effect of these tactics within their base. Not anywhere did I claim that this was a one party phenomenon.
Actions that have been taken by the McCain campaign to play into a “fear” that Obama is a terrorist, a muslim, and “not one of us” have far reaching consequences that bring out the worst in people. It has lead to widespread mischaracterizations, outright lies, and hate-filled remarks that have nothing to do with the issues of this campaign and have been condemned by many from all over the political spectrum. It is an ugly and dangerous way to run a campaign and it has been sickening to watch unfold.
cincysuz, I was writing this to present what has been happening as of late so that those who have not seen any of these clips would be able to see what is happening. If you are implying that I somehow condone anyone yelling “kill him” during a politial rally or any of these tactics, then you are off base. If you are trying to put me into the “closeted Republican” box (like you do with other authors on this site), then in that regard you are also off base.

Mr. Johnson,
You seem a bit quick to point examples out whether positive or negative that puts one of the two parties in a favorable light, the Democratic Party.
I am merely suggesting that you need to look deeper. To think that this game is lopsided is a little naive.
The real lopsidedness is the lack of voice of the 3rd parties, the voice of the majority of americans I would argue, if allowed to be heard. For example; Every single third party candidate is completely opposed to the “bailout” package, and so is 70% of the public. Where does McBama sit on this issue?
I stopped caring about unfair personal attacks between the two “main” party candidates long ago. I would suggest that you do the same and start seeking true knowledge. I am quite certain you will begin to see things as I do.
15 Oct 2008 at 09:37 am | #
Mr. Scott Ryan,
Whether you think this issue, that of McCain’s campaign techniques, paints the Democratic Party in a favorable light is beside the point. The point is to examine what these techinques say about the McCain/Palin campaign and the larger issue of the effect on a large section of the population that will vote for this ticket. Again, I have not suggested that this is one-sided.
To say that I am “naive” as to how things are truly lopsided is simply not accurate. Did you read my last piece on the need for a progressive movement? It can be found here. Perhaps you missed the entire section on Obama’s history of accomodate himself to existing institutions instead of reform them or tear them down.
So far in response to this post I have been accused of both sympathizing with the Republicans and painting the Democrats in a favorable light. Interesting.
15 Oct 2008 at 02:33 pm | #
Mr. Johnson,
Your advocacy of the progressive movement shows your true colors.
It means nothing other than how you lean with regards to the two candidates.
I will say this ...
I have been seeing a unity of the far left and the far right for some time. Ask Mr. Dean.
Do not hide your true beliefs behind labels. Be true to your feelings, show people who you are. It will allow you to grow.
You and I are allies, I have no doubt about that. I am merely trying to lay the ground work for when we succeed and potentially become adversaries.
If you wish your values to be reflected in government, you must first know your values.
I will pray for you tonight.

General George C. Scott, Bush is a fascist just like his grand daddy was. George Bush’s grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.
There was a fascist plot to take over the country called the Business plot. A corporate cabal went to Gen. Smedley Butler who had as he put it been a “gangster for American capitialism”. JP Morgan, Dupont and GoodYear Tire were involved in the plot.
As Noam Chomsky said last week, we have a one-party system, the business party, with two factions, the Democrats and Republicans. Hitler lost the war, but fascism is winning now, just ask the bail out boys that had a fraudulent debate last night which was sponsored by the corporations.
16 Oct 2008 at 12:06 pm | #
Justin-
1)You can’t hold a man responsible for the actions of his grandfather. That’s not fair.
2)So Bush is in with big business, fine. But comparing him to a man that slaughtered 6 million innocent Jews is a bit over the line. Surely you can see that.
3) Chomsky is a Socialist bum. Who cares what he thinks?
16 Oct 2008 at 01:32 pm | #
General George C. Scott, The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Bush is where he is because of his daddy and grand daddy. Bush slaughtered at least 1.2 million innocent Iraqi men women and children and that’s a conservative estimate from a year or two ago. He’s displaced millions more.
We don’t even know the numbers in Afghanistan and he’s trying to get us in a war with Iran because he and his family are war profiteers and have been for generations. He’s stolen elections, destroyed our environment, spied on Americans, instituted torture and you don’t have to have killed anyone to be a fascist or a Nazi. Bush didn’t earn the White House, but he earned the comparison to the fascist Nazi’s.
Chomsky is a Libertarian-Socialist and the New York Times Calls Him “Arguably the Most Important Intellectual Alive”. People around the world care about what Noam Chomsky thinks.

Now that the Secret Service has determined that no one shouted “Kill him” at the rally, will you apologize? Will you retract the false story? Enquiring minds want to know…

An Al Jazeera camera crew caught the honest sentiments of McCain/Palin supporters at an Ohio rally:

There you have it. In Justin Jeffre’s America we’re all responsible for the sins of our fathers, or grandfathers. Luckily for those of us living in the real world that is not the case. I’m responsible for my own actions, and not the actions or inactions of my ancestors.
As you well know, but choose to ignore, the 1.2 million figure is highly disputed. But that’s neiother here nor there. Go ahead and compare Bush to Hitler, it only makes some of your other claims, which are legitimate, come off as nothing more than the insane ramblings of a fringe nut-case. I’m not a George W. Bush fan, and wouldn’t vote for him if given the opportunity, but he’s no Hitler. Anyone who is objective and reasonable can see that.
The only people “around the world” that care about what Noam Chomsky thinks are America haters, leftist elites, communists, and socialists.
The New York Times is a left-wing rag that’s unfit to wipe my ass with much less read.
16 Oct 2008 at 08:32 pm | #
What a shocker - Secret Service says the “kill him” yell at the McCain rally never happened. The only person who heard it out of the entire crowd, all the media assembled, and 20 secret service agents was a lone reporter. How much do you want to bet he’s a registered Democrat?

Dewey asks:
Dewey, there is nothing to apologize for and there is nothing false about this story. From my piece:
“...and the Secret Service is investigating whether a supporter shouted out “Kill Him” during a speech given by Sarah Palin in Florida.”
17 Oct 2008 at 11:02 am | #
General George C. Scott, you must have missed what I wrote so I’ll repost it.
Georgie W. Bush is a fascist because of his own record of shredding our constitution and bombing foreign countries that never attacked us. He’s a fascist because he’s merging corporate and government power and he’s torturing people.
George Bush and his criminal policies are not America. America is the people and the constitution that have been abused by Bush and the other corporatists in both parties. Noam Chomsky doesn’t hate America, he speaks frankly about what those in power are doing and how they are doing it so that we can change the country’s direction and make it a better country.
The stenographers at the New York Times were the mouth piece for Bush and Cheney’s lies that took us to war.
17 Oct 2008 at 12:32 pm | #
Hey Chris, how about another story with a new headline: Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Their Raging Supporters.
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/obama-supporter-assaults-female-mccain-volunteer-in-new-york/
17 Oct 2008 at 12:42 pm | #
Per Justin- “Georgie W. Bush is a fascist because of his own record of shredding our constitution and bombing foreign countries that never attacked us.”
Using that logic, the following men are all fascists as well:
Bill Clinton - Bombed Serbia, who never attacked us
George H.W. Bush - Attacked Iraq, who never attacked us
Ronald Reagan - Bombed Libya, who never attacked us
Lyndon Johnson - Attacked North Vietnam, who never attacked us
John F. Kennedy - Attacked Cuba, who never attacked us
Harry Truman - Attacked North Korea, who never attacked us
Franklin Roosevelt - Attacked Germany, who never attacked us. Also shredded Constitution with the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII
Abraham Lincoln - Shredded Constitution by suspending Habeus Corpus.
In Justin’s dream world, every major leader from both political parties in the past 100 years are fascists. Thankfully, Our Lord and Savior Ralph Nader is here along with Saint Noam Chomsky to save us from ourselves.

i love this site as i have so much fun reading everyone’s comments. i must live in a different universe than most of you. The issues are important not who shows up at the Demo or Repub events, but most people have not read the platforms or even know anything past what MSNBC and FOX talking heads tell them.
Obama can hang with all the washed up unrepented terrorists and racist preachers he wants and obfuscates the connection - but it does beg the issue of his judgment.
What is important is who will increase military spending and cut domestic spending and lower taxes.
17 Oct 2008 at 06:08 pm | #
Mark - are you serious? You didn’t really bring up Obama’s judgment. McCain’s transition chief was a lobbyist for Sadaam Hussein! His wife is a drug addict. Sarah Palin is married to a secessionist, her own pastor hunts witches.
And indeed McCain is your man if you want military spending increased, domestic spending reduced and taxes lowered for rich people.
And all you defenders of the white racists and their dispicable and dangerous remarks, you are racists yourselves. No doubt about it. It’s about race. You didn’t mind having the white village idiot in charge of things for the last 8 years and look at the results. And the prospect of his old white twin for another 4 doesn’t scare you. But having a black man in the most powerful position in America makes you shake in your boots. It might confirm that you actually aren’t better than other people just by virtue of being white and your privilege card could be rescinded. The free ride on the white gravy train may be over.
17 Oct 2008 at 06:34 pm | #
McCain hangs out with real unrepented terrorists like Bush and Henry Kissinger and seeks the endorsement of crazy preachers like John Hagee, so what is your point?
(Hagee has come under criticism for his controversial statements about homosexuality, Islam, the Catholic Church, women. McCain finally repudiated Hagee after a recording emerged of Hagee claiming God allowed the rise of Adolf Hitler because it allowed the Jewish people to reclaim Israel.) Gore’s running mate, hawkish Joe Leiberman, called Hagee “ a Moses”.
Both of the bail out boys will increase the bloated and wasteful Pentagon budget and continue the corporate welfare state.
17 Oct 2008 at 07:16 pm | #
General George C. Scott, you forgot the other war criminals like Nixon (who carpet bombed Laos and Cambodia) and Ford who backed the 9/11/73 coup in Chile and the Indonesian military’s massacre in East Timor. These are war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Lets look at some definitions of fascism and fascist.
Mussolini was a fascist and unserstood what it meant I think.
FDR saved capitalism in this country by taking the Socialist’s platform to a large extent and he called it “the New Deal”. The Fascist that tried to launch a coup against FDR because of this called ”The Business Plot”.
1. a person who believes in or sympathizes with fascism.
2. (often initial capital letter) a member of a fascist movement or party.
3. a person who is dictatorial or has extreme right-wing views.
Bush has stolen elections and merged corporate and state power from Blackwater, to Haliburton’s no bid contracts and Diebold. As I said, the 1.2 million dead Iraqi’s is a conservative estimate from a credible source. We don’t know the numbers of dead civilians in Afghanistan but there’s no end in site to that quagmire because the bail out boys both want to expand that war too.
In anon’s dream world everything the old US of A does is OK because we can do no wrong no matter how many people get killed and maimed. The people hate wars and it takes bipartisan lies to keep the Military Industrial Complex going. Nader and Chomsky share the same position on the Iraq war with the majority of the American people. They agree that we have a one-party system with two factions, the Democrats and the Republicans. That’s why Congress has single digit ratings, Bush somehow has 25% approval rating.
Democracy is not an automatic or sure thing. Americans need to remain vigilant against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.
18 Oct 2008 at 10:14 am | #
cincysuz - I read your comment and I think by any reading of your comments that you are calling me a racist. I do believe that is the first time in my life I have been called a racist. I am glad to see that you can carry on a blog discussion on such a high level. It is pretty much the same type of response I have got from a large segment of liberals and democrats since 1972. It might not occur to you that Obama and his talking heads have played the race card on Bill and Hillery Clinton, Geradine Ferrero, and anyone who might disagree with his socialist positions. Do you think the Clintons and the 1st woman VP nominee are racists?
Justin - FDR did not save capitalism, his solicist policies prolonged the depression and helped create the problems we have now.
18 Oct 2008 at 11:33 am | #
Justin:
I can only assume that you were joking regarding FDR.
The biggest corporate fascist in history.
You may want to do more research and modify your statements.
18 Oct 2008 at 12:41 pm | #
Mark, FDR passed regulation that prevented what is going on now. The current Financial Market meltdown is happening because Clinton gave us deregulation that got rid of the Glass Steagal Act and other things that were designed to keep Wall Street in line.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was the program that built many public buildings, projects and roads and operated large arts, drama, media and literacy projects. It fed children and redistributed food, clothing and housing. Social Security has put food on the table for many elderly and disabled people. It’s a very popular program though Bush supporters would’ve liked to privatize it. Think of where people retiring noe would be with that money in the stock market today, they’d have nothing.
FDR was a corporatist, I didn’t say everything he did was good. If he hadn’t taken some of the Socialist’s programs there would have been a revolution because people were desperate and mad as hell at what the banksters had done. FDR saved American capitalism. Many fascists didn’t like these New Deal policies and they tried to launch a coup called The Business Plot. You should research that.
20 Oct 2008 at 04:09 pm | #

Cindysuz.... wasn’t Obama a coke head?? Cindy McCain was addicted to painkillers. Al Jazeera and Huffington Post? Now there is 2 fine sources of Information.
The Secret Service could not find one person other than the reporter who wrote it about the “kill him” statement .They did an extensive investigation.
Mr Ayers was a memeber of a group, that he and his wife started, planted bombs at Government Buildings, the Capitol, the Pentagon, NYPD headquarters, etc etc, and killed people, and tried to kill more . That is terrorism. Obama’s association in whatever way to Ayers, is relevant. Mark is Right. It goes to his judgement. NYTimes is worrying about Pallins shoes. interesting. First he just me the guy, then hung around for 8 years on the same board, blowing 50 million dollars for childrens educations ( Bomb Building 101 ? )
Also, the CONSTITUTION says Freedom of of chosing your faith. So when someone asks Obama if he is a Muslim, you far left go crazy, but it is ok, to ask about HER pastor. Do the same rules you espouse not apply to you? Obama has lobbyists on his team also. you know that right?
This is the problem. 2 sets of rules.
I don’t like his views, or programs, I am a racist? I don’t know him as a man, because he doesn’t answer much ( sure speaks in circles pretty well) but I am certain, black, white, green, yellow, whatever, he is not the right man for the job of President of the United States. I am sure bring that since I wrote this, I am a racist now too right?????
24 Oct 2008 at 12:35 pm | #
Chris… The Obama/Biden ticket doesnt lie or use dirty tactics? ? Yes or no?
I have watch Obama on the news, hear his EXACT words, and get an e-mail 30 seconds later with half the quote cut out. Those are honorable tactics?
One more thing. If the best way to grow the economy is from the bottom up, wouldn’t Mexico have the best economy in the world?
24 Oct 2008 at 02:21 pm | #
They are more credible than Fox and CNN.
Ayers never killed anyone and the Weatherman were never charged with killing any police officer. A few of them managed to blow themselves up and the rest of the group decided to bomb banks and buildings but they were careful to make sure there weren’t people there.
I think there tactics were terrible and certainly didn’t help their cause, but they were reacting to state sponsored terrorism.
From Wiki:
Of course two wrongs don’t make a right, but I believe they served their time and Ayers is now a respected member of the community that serves on boards with people from both parties.
Henry Kissinger is an advisor to McCain and he’s the biggest terrorist this country has ever produced.
25 Oct 2008 at 12:25 am | #
Ayers never served any time as the States Attorney was a zealous as Ayers and the very constitution that he was so against , kept him out of prison for the rest of his life. . He still killed people. No excuse for that. from anyone.
I would bet more people disrespect him than respect him. I might have no problem with hm after ll these years if he said “ I am sorry”. He didn’t and only said “ I wish we had done more” . Besides, wrongs dont justify more wrongs. Great role model for kids.
Is the idea we are regressing back to the 60"s ? What is Naders position on un repenting bombers? I’d love to hear that he approves of that conduct. Does he?
Just about any media outlet is a joke. I love it, NYT in the zell, are now worth nothing but something called junk paper. Maybe they will ask for a bailout too??
The Huff and NYT, Atlanta Journal, Cnn Larry King, Cambell Brown, make Bill ‘O’Rielly look like Edward R Morrow. hear CNN and the VIEW are going to merge, and that there will be an opening at Oprah as she will be in the Obama cabinet
25 Oct 2008 at 12:27 am | #
PS General Powell killed more people than bth of them combined...right? General powell is the one who made a speech , knowingly with false information resulting in approval of this war. Doesnt he advise Obama??

R said:
I have never said that the Obama/Biden ticket has never used dirty tactics or lied. This piece was about the type of tactics that the McCain/Palin ticket has engaged in as of late.

R, I don’t think Ayers Killed anyone and I don’t think he was against the constitution, the Vietnam War was. And they only regret the didn’t end the war.
Ayers has said he was sorry about the violence.
I don’t know what you mean by regressing back to the 60s. The 60s was a time of great struggles and movements for change. We need to rebuild those movements for peace and equal rights. I’m sure that Nader doesn’t support any kind of bombing, especially bombing inflicted on the massive scale like the US has inflicted on Veitnam and Iraq.
Bill O’Reilly is the biggest joke there is. Nobody could make that blowhard look like Edward R. Murrow.

Did Nader succeed in getting in the Guinness Book of World Records?
