Hundreds gathered today in the cold rain outside of City Hall to say that the gay marriage ban (known in California as Proposition 8) is outrageous and unjust. Organizers, like Cameron Tolle, say that they hadn’t planned the rally for very long but that it was in solidarity with people rallying in 300 cities and 15 countries around the world. The rally included comedian Margaret Cho and former Congressional candidate Vic Wulsin.
The diverse crowd filled the sidewalks in front of City Hall with an enthusiastic crowd chanting “What do we want? Equality! When do we want it? Now!” and “We’re fired up and ready to go.” Cameron Tolle, told the crowd he hadn’t been political leading up to the election, but after the failure of Proposition 8 and many discussions with friends on line he was tired of being treated like a second class citizen and decided to take action.
Comedian Margaret Cho was in town (she’s performing tonight at the Taft theater) and she sang a song dedicated to Mormons and to other anti-gay bigots with lyrics calling for them to “stick Proportion 8 up your ass.” Gay couples that had traveled to other states to get married were called to the stage and some proudly showed off their marriage licenses (no other marriages were reportedly harmed during the defiant display).
Dr. Vic Wulsin was the only Democratic Party official in the rally despite the fact that this was an important part of the Party’s base. President-elect Obama’s win was celebrated as a sign that change was coming despite his support of gay marriage bans. The crowd proudly cheered “Yes We Can” yet unlike some other groups, they are under no illusion that the struggle for justice has now been won.
There was a moment of silence in solidarity with human rights rallies going on simultaneously around the world. And the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were invoked, “The moral arc of the universe bends at the elbow of justice.”
Anti-gay bigotry is still prevalent in our society, but Proposition 8 narrowly passed and shows that demand for full human rights for all people is growing. It’s only a matter of time before the tide finally turns and the words “liberty and justice for all” have no meaning here in the United States of America.

There’s a fantastic, a truly fantastic, column written on this issue (Prop 8) in the Los Angeles Sentinal by writer Jasmyne A. Cannick. Column is titled Skin folk and Kin folk. Anyway if anyone is interested you can google and find newspaper and then look under opinions.

What? Again, why are you not protesting, in California, the black churches who were the deciding factor in the defeat of this proposition?
Obama is going to fix it, because he supports such bans? Aslo, doesn’t Ca allow all the things like property rights, medical chices etc etc which were the basis of the argument a few years back? Gays have those rights.

R--I’m not sure what argument you’re making here. I’m not opposed, nor I’m I for, gay marriage. I’m not making an opinion on it. If I was still out in CA I would have voted to support Prop 8.

CAJD - so you are against gay marriage. If given the opportunity to vote for or against Prop 8, you would support it. Then you are against gay marriage. Don’t say you’re not for or against.

MLK would never had supported this kind of perverted and immoral behavior.

Tyrone, I couldn’t agree more. MLK was totally opposed to discrimination, especially this wicked, misguided and distorted view that God wants his children to be denied their basic human rights. Such disgusting behavior indeed.

God is not a hater. Earlier this week a post on Sarah’s Palin’s blind ambition. Now how about Love conquers All! Love does conquer all even same sex all, right?

CAJD - A yes on 8 was a yes to ban gay marriage. The proposition was very confusing as many have said. Melissa Etheridge and some other celebrities believed that it was purposely crafted to confuse people and that many thought they were voting FOR same gender marriage. I don’t know if that’s true. I read the article you recommended in the Los Angeles Sentinel and it was a good read, a view from the inside.

"Dr. Vic Wulsin was the only Democratic Party official in the rally despite the fact that this was an important part of the Party’s base.”
Greg Harris was also there. But it’s unfortunate that not a single elected offical attended.

Cincysuz--you’re right I did read somewhere that there was tricky language on that ballot--I’m starting to see a pattern here. When some (all across this country) opposed certain issues they have the solicitor’s office write the language so that it is confusing. Glad you found the article interesting.
In regards to elected officials not attending I think it’s a shame. Seems some officials only want to jump on popular issues.
