Exposed!  The Enquirer’s business relationship with the Freedom Center

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

While exploring the Freedom Center’s website for this recent article, I came across a link designed to connect potential volunteers with area agencies who can benefit from such work.  But I noticed the link took me to a different web address, even though the design of the Freedom Center’s site remained in tact.

See for yourself.  Follow this link, and you’ll notice it’s not hosted at “freedomcenter.org,” but through “shopatcincinnati.com.” So what is “shopatcincinnati.com”?

There is nothing at the home page shopatcincinnati.com.  But a Google search on the domain yielded interesting results.  For example, this page, branded with The Enquirer’s logo, is the same interface as The Freedom Center’s for linking volunteers with agencies.  So even when the Center appears to do something in its community, it’s really just riding the back of a pre-existing interface at The Enquirer.

Here’s another version, branded again by The Enquirer (along with The Post and Cincinnati.com).

This shopatcincinnati.com page will allow you to buy Enquirer subscriptions.

This address— http://www.shopatcincinnati.com/newsletter/tipsheet.asp—will redirect to a “Tip Sheet” for Cincinnati.com.

So it’s really no surprise that the registrant contact at the WhoIs registry for shopatcincinnati.com is The Enquirer.  But I did find it noteworthy that the registry details for freedomcenter.org show people with addresses at 312 Elm Street (The Enquirer building), and not 50 East Freedom Way (the actual address for the museum).

Haven’t done complete research, but, it would look like ebay has a branding fund raising affiliate arrangement. (Notice logo in lower right).

Possibly, the ‘fishwRap’ had a freedom center fundraiser page on their server as a community service with a link on their site for the freedom center ?

This could have been prior to freedom centers own site.

As a webmaster, it would be easier to just link to this already established affiliate arrangement. For two reasons: Fast, easy to create a link, Second: Utilize another’s bandwidth and storage capacity. This is a big factor if you are minimizing cost with an entry hosting package that , let’s say, has 30 MB storage and 500 monthly bandwidth.

Doesn’t explain the whois except that in volunteerism, webmasters are self-serving. For example: several webmasters purchase the domain in their own name as a tying arrangement (at least those that have been around the block). Especially if they are getting hosting fees. Why ? If the customer ever wants to leave, good riddance, the domain name is not theirs. The webmasters, hosting companies bundle it with their services and in the fine print, oops you do not own the name.

A good example would be to look at who owns hamiltoncountyrepublicanparty.org and where they are located.

Yeah, ask the freedom center to let you take a look at their data center. It’s one of the biggest ($$) i have seen, oh and most of staff don’t know why it’s there or what all those fiber connections are for, they out source their website.
