This week, at a Rotary Club meeting, Dr. Henry Heimlich gave a speech promoting the use of the Heimlich Maneuver for near drowning victims and asthma patients. Both of these techniques are widely discredited.
The Cincinnati Beacon has written extensively about this issue in the past, but what’s shocking about this latest video clip is its freshness. Despite all the experts who debunk his weird science, Henry Heimlich still goes to wherever he can find an audience, pushing these weird concepts.
Needless to say, one should not perform the Heimlich Maneuver on near drowning victims. These victims do not suffer from “water in the lungs,” despite Heimlich’s claims. (Just read about laryngospasm to learn more.) A Heimlich Maneuver could, however, cause the victim to vomit—and let’s just say little hot dog chunks in the lungs can be a real killer.

There are plenty of quacks like Heimlich running around out there. What makes his case especially interesting is that Deaconess Associations, the huge local health services corporation, promotes his dangerous theories.
According to the Enquirer, a big chunk of Deaconess was recently bought by Mike Barber and other doctors in an effort to turnaround the unprofitable hospital: http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080718/NEWS01/307180040/0/rss
For their investment, are Barber and his MD pals also buying Dr. Hankenstein’s problems, including illicit human subjects research?
Paging Dr. Wulsin! Or is it Wells? Or is it Chancellor Vic? http://massdiscussion.blogspot.com/2008/09/oh-02-wulsin-update.html
