Coming this week:  Buy Nothing Day! (and Boycott MTV)

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Each year, the good people at AdBusters encourage Americans to think twice about their consumption, holding the Day of Thanksgiving—typically the start of the Christmas shopping frenzy—as “Buy Nothing Day.” This year, they have put together a compelling television commerical, and MTV has said that the ad goes “too far” for their standards.  This, from a station that profits from half-naked girls dancing around violent steretypes!

Here is the video for which MTV will not allow AdBusters to purchase space:

AdBuster’s response:

MTV, the channel that markets itself to hip youth, has decreed that our Buy Nothing Day public service spot “goes further than we are willing to accept on our channels”. Gangsta rap and sexualized, semi-naked school girls are okay, but apparently not a burping pig talking about consumption. If you object to this sort of corporate censorship, why not send them a message now?

You can follow this link to send a simple message to MTV, letting the know you will not be watching them anymore.

Tell MTV that I won’t be watching them anymore?  I stopped watching MTV when they stopped showing music videos, circa 1995.

  2. says:

I see this non-commercial on Freespeech TV and Link TV all the time. These non-commercial channels are excellent and can be found on DISH TV network. Or you can check out their websites http://www.freespeechtv.org and http://www.linktv.org.

    They are better than PBS!

  3. JFD says:

    Shopping killed the video star?

  4. water damage restoration says:

Also most see the two names as synonyms, the services of general interest doesn’t imply that the “public services” are delivered by public servants, but can also be delivered by a private company.

  5. nicht mehr schüchtern says:

you mean “video killed the radio store”
