Best of Cincinnati—Reader’s Choice!

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Everyone involved at The Cincinnati Beacon would like to thank you, our faithful readers, for taking the time to vote in CityBeat’sBest of Cincinnati” poll.  Thanks to you, The Beacon was named “Best Blog” in the “Reader’s Picks” category.  Additionally, we made other appearances in the latest CityBeat special feature—making this our third year in a row to earn a spot in a publication spotlighting what makes Cincinnati unique!

In a sidebar by contributor Roger Yeardley, The Beacon also got mentioned under the category “Best ways to stay informed in Cincinnati”:

4.  The Web: The mainstream media (MSM) blow at providing information on things that affect your life.  Did you catch the report by one of our local major media outlets on runaway courtesy carts at the airport?  Ever wonder what’s going on in the world other than the latest on Anna Nicole Smith or Brittany Spears?  For information on issues of substance, the Web is a great source.  Local sites include Cincinnati Beacon, the Antipartisan ( http://www.theantipartisan.com ) and Cincy Music ( http://www.cincymusic.com )...

And, if you are still reading, you may also be interested to know that yours truly got mentioned in two other categories—in one as a sidenote, and in another dedicated purely to a recent interview conducted here at The Beacon.

In a category entitled “Best Blog Beef,” CityBeat acknowledges how I take no prisoners:

Blogger Nate Livingston has been having fun calling CityBeat writers nasty names and rabblerouser The Dean of Cincinnati will go after just about anyone...

But my favorite appearance in this year’s “Best of Cincinnati” came in a category entitled “Best Stretch by a Blogger Scorned,” which was based on our recent expose about how local musicians Jake Speed and Tracy Walker are jingle writing hacks for 3CDC:

When the self-styled Dean of Cincinnati couldn’t get singers Tracy Walker and Jake Speed to answer questions about the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC), he rhetorically asked if they weren’t “complicit in the gentrification of Over-the-Rhine and the driving of poor people out of their homes.” Their offense?  “The duo recorded a song commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce—some of whose board members also sit on the board to 3CDC.” The Cincinnati Beacon, the Dean’s web site, has a knack for raising interesting questions and absurd conspiracy theories.

This category sounds a lot like this comment signed with the name “Greg Flannery,” left on the article in question.  One must wonder how Flannery—who recently got arrested for protesting the war in Iraq—would feel if Speed and Walker wrote a song about George W. Bush bringing Democracy to the Middle East and saving the world.

    Congrats!!

  2. Beacon Fan! says:

Like Bill Sloat’s “murky” story about being spat upon, Shity Beat misses all the details on this “conspiracy theory”. Tracy Walker played at all 3CDC’s “wrap sessions”. She is complicit in the gentrification that 3CDC is engaing in and Shity Beat is complicit in Cincinnati’s lazy, inept, lapdog corporate media!

The Beacon kills Shity Beats blog!

  3. TWO & OUT says:

Dale4Sale honored by CityBeat’s Best of:

“Best Proof That Name Recognition Is Everything: Dale Mallory was the Amazing Disappearing Candidate of 2006. That’s seldom a good strategy for a first-time candidate — unless he’s under criminal investigation for alleged theft of funds from the West End Community Council. Not to worry. The mayor’s brother easily won election to the Ohio House of Representatives from the 32nd District, the same seat his brother and father held before him.”

    Congrats Beacon Crew!!

  4. A Concerned Reader says:

    Beacon Fan!,

Wow, Walker played at paying gigs. The horror!

Do you pay federal taxes? Well, you must support the Iraq War then. That is a much more direct connection, than the one you cite. Child Killer!

    Get a grip.

  5. says:

Does this mean I get a shout out as best commenter

  6. Beacon Fan! says:

A Concerned Reader, Walker played at a 3CDC event that was supposed to make the community feel like 3CDC cares what the community thinks. They don’t. If Walker played at a rally for George W. Bush a lot of people might think it’s wrong and not want to support her anymore.

3CDC had a political event to put a happy face on their gentrification policy in OTR. Walker allowed herself to be used to help sell this anti-poor policy. She should be ashamed of herself and shouldn’t do it again if she knows what’s good for her career in Cincy.

As the Dean admitted, we are all complicit in the mass murder that is being perpetuated with our tax dollars by our public servants. And yes babies are being killed!

  7. Green Machine says:

CutandYorrunian, you get the award for best boot-licking unDemocratic troll. Congrats!
