Andre Harper’s Campaign Plagiarism

Posted by The Dean of Cincinnati

Each campaign cycle, bigger money candidates steal ideas and slogans from smaller money candidates.  The belief is that, since a certain candidate is likely to get less media exposure, few will know that the act of plagiarism has taken place.  In a recent direct mailing, Republican Andre Harper steals a line from Justin Jeffre—one he likely got from Justin at a forum in Oakley—and even caters to Green sensibilities through graphic design.  This is nothing short of political plagiarism.

Anyone with basic powers of observation and rudimentary deductive reasoning skills will easily perceive how this “joke” comes directly from the Jeffre campaign.  And as an endorsed Green candidate, it makes perfect sense to come from the Jeffre campaign.  It is a “recycling” joke, and it’s Green Party origins are even more obvious through Harper’s use of Green as a theme for this mailer.

In fact, Harper has been playing color games this whole campaign:  his campaign color is “blue”—a standard color for Democrats—though he has been endorsed by the Republicans.  It is almost as if Harper is trying to hide the specifics of his endorsement.

I guess turnabout is fair play as Andre Harper definitely mentioned holding a “community council congress” when he spoke at a forum I attended at a Walnut Hills club last month, and now Jeffre and Patton have used it in their “Comprehensive Neighborhood Rescue Plan.”

  2. Not a Republican says:

So Andre steals campaign ideas. Looks like Sam Malone steals money from his son’s inheritance!

“The probate court ruling issued Oct. 8 states that Malone wrongfully withheld $22,000 worth of insurance and Social Security benefits that should have gone to his son.

According to court papers obtained by News 5, Malone failed to report receiving nearly $20,000 from an insurance company.

“Malone states the funds were used to pay general household expenses,” the documents say, and the candidate restated his claim to News 5.

“As any parent knows, it is expensive to raise children today,” Malone said in a statement. “Over the course of four years, the expenses related to private school, tutoring, and basic necessities have far exceeded any benefits my family received.”

Court documents show that’s not what the money should have been used for and claim that Malone did not provide a definitive paper trail.

Malone said he spent $2,000 of the boy’s money on tutoring, but the court said he produced documentation for only $250.

“(Malone) provides very little information on what things were purchased specifically for use by (his son),” court records say.

Malone declined to be interviewed on camera, but in a statement that he said was reviewed by his legal and political advisors, the candidate said he expected the court to “ultimately agree that all expenses are justified.”

    There goes the election!

We have documented the republicans using this tactic for years.

I have never documented anyone other than republicans using this tactic.

Lisa Allen when she couldn’t shake the trail of tardiness just made the message her own.

Really?  He used it in Walnut Hills?

The idea is actually from the 2005 campaign.  Guess who came up with the concept?

  5. Bearman says:

Not sure exactly what words Jeffre used at the candidates forum but the idea of “recycled politicians” didn’t start with him.

In fact…I came up with an idea for an after election cartoon 2 months ago that uses the same concept.  If I have time I’ll create and post in the next couple weeks.

Taking others ideas in itself is not plagiarism especially if you enhance it and make it your own.  To me it shows a politician is open to new ideas.  JFK himself did this with his address “ask not…”  People forget that Warren Harding, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Kahlil Gibran each said practically the same thing earlier but JFK is the one most remembered for it.

“The Bahamas Democratic Movement believes that the Bahamian people are tired of recycled politicians and cloned political parties that fail to address the nations present issues” said Mr. Stuart.

from 2000.  the line is pretty old

and LA has had a community congress that does nothing for years.  could be a model for the cincinnati one that also will do nothing

  7. Jones says:

The biggest laugh is the 2 papers I received in the mail today from Jeffre’s campaign. The neon green sheet had this:

    The Environment!

“Good environmental policy is good ecomonic policy 100% of the time.

Show me a polluter, and I’ll show you a subsidy!”

The last I recall, Jeffre was still wheeling around that belching librarymobile.

I’m in peals of laughter. ROFLMAO!

Sorry Jeffre. I sent in my absentee ballot last week. You wasted 41 cents, an envelope & 2 pieces of paper. Pollution. It goes in the recycling sack for the SPCA. They shred papers for the little puppies to pee on. LMAO!!!

Really? I can find no record on the ‘Net of Justin making such a statement in 2005. I guess we’ll just have to take your word for it, Dean-O!

If Justin really put this idea out there in 2005, why did he wait so long in the campaign to “unveil” it? Couldn’t he have done so weeks or even months ago? Seems like reheated leftovers, to me.

  9. anon says:

Who doesn’t steal/borrow other’s ideas? I’m still wondering about who came up with the One Cincinnati idea. Was it Alicia Reece,Brian Garry, Winburn, or SpongeBob Square Pants?

  10. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

    Dean,

You can’t be serious? You created the phrasing about “recycled candidates”? Sounds like you also may have a hand in developing the Internet.

Regarding your infinite wisdom, please enlighten us with your council predictions and where Jeffre will place.

I am more than slightly curious.

Where did I say Justin made the idea?

  12. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

If it’s not Justin who used it in 2005, then stop playing games and enlighten us already, Dean-O.

Or do you like being purposefully vague?

  13. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

The idea for a “Community Congress” was part of a candidate’s campaign in 2005.

The volunteer for that candidate’s campaign, who authored the plan, gave it to Justin.

It is not plagiarism if you are given the material.

  14. anon again says:

On another site, people like Malone, Cooper, Qualls, Malone and Winburn are referred to as “re-treads”. I dont see the conflict in calling them “re” anythings. They are all washed up has-beens and need to collectively crawl back under whatever “re-tired” rock they slithered out from under.

PS, why all the Harper hate on here?

  15. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) says:

    Dean,

    What are your council predictions?

Where is Justin going to place?

    Please let us know.

  16. anon says:

its funny that these guys want to hate on Harper. I have been watching him. He took a stand against his party on the Jail tax, he worked his way out of the ghetto, he has a long track record of service (military and community). I saw him speak at the NAACP forum and he was the only one candidate with passion. I can see why a gutless clown like you would hate a man with so much integrity.

  17. anon says:

Can you provide any documentation of JJ2k7 using the term “recycled politicians”?  Further, can you prove that JJ2k7 did not simply steal the phrase, himself, from the 1060 references that popped when I googled “recycled politicians”?

Finally, the crap with the colors is ridiculous.  Are you next going to claim David Crowley’s green shirts are another example of “political plagiarism”?  I know Crowley’s Irish, but EVERYBODY knows Democrats are blue, Republicans are red, and Greens are green.  I mean, really…how did Crowley think he could get away with it.  It’s obvious he’s trying to confuse the voters into thinking he’s a Green.  Cecil Thomas’s shirts are orange.  He’s obviously trying to convince people he really plays for the Bengals (likely a decision made early in the campaign…before the Bengals started playing).  Laketa Cole’s colors are green, so it’s obvious she, Crowley, and Harper, are involved in a wanna-be Green conspiracy.

  18. JJ2K's Conscience says:

    Speaking of recycled…..

I received bulk campaign mail from JJ today. So did my Wife. So did my teenage daughter. None of the 2 pages per mailing campaign literature enclosed (plus envelope) was printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Nor were any of the roughly 20 or so of JJ’s illegally placed campaign signs which I removed this weekend printed on recycled paper.

Question: what do you call a so-called green candidate who drives a gas guzzling 30 year old RV that has a gas consumption of 8MPG and who sends out thousands of campaign mailers and posts hundreds upon hundreds signs none of which are printed on recycled paper?

Answer: A hypocrite. Or Justing Jeffre. The two answers are interchangeable.

  19. STOP THE PRESSES!!! says:

Quick!  We have to do something about this!  I got a piece of mail yesterday from Steve Pavelisch urging me to “Recycle Your Garbage!  Not your politicians!”

This is obviously another case of political plagiarism, and it must be stopped!  Everybody knows JJ2k7 invented the phrase “recycled politicians” at a candidates’ forum in Oakley this year.  (He also holds a patent on the color green.  So watch out!)

Interestingly enough, I found the phrase “Recycled politicians” used in a Canadian publication from 1978.  Lexis-Nexis doesn’t really go back much longer than that, so it only makes sense that JJ1k978 was probably railing about “recycled politicians” as he approached his fifth birthday, or sometime before that.

Canadian Publication Ripped Off Child Jeffre.  The Canadian paper The Globe and Mail ripped off JJ2k7 (TKA, JJ1k978) by writing, “The ambience of that room in which the Benchers meet in convocation is hostile to a recycled politician.” [The Globe and Mail, 2/11/78, emphasis added].

  20. When Exactly Did You Graduate Law School, Jason? says:

The volunteer for that candidate’s campaign, who authored the plan, gave it to Justin.

It is not plagiarism if you are given the material.

In all actuality, it may be.  If you write a plan, come up with an idea, or invent something for an organization, or company as an employee or even a volunteer, it is more likely the intellectual property of that entity than yours.
